Is Grant Corriveau still on this list? If not, can someone please send me his
current e-mail address (off list). I tried to send him something, but it came
back as address unknown (must have been an old one).
Thanx muchly.

I am getting a 33gal compressor and I intend to use it to do (among other
things) the
painting of the airframe. I have read a bit about the High Volume Low
Pressure painting
units but they are not in the budget. My question is on the spray gun. Is
there a difference
in the gun that is attached to a HVLP vs a standard air compressor? Again
I'll have a standard
air compressor but most shops offer HVLP spray guns. Can I use a HVLP spray
gun with my
standard air compressor and get the same benifits of less overspray? Or
should I get a regular spray gun because at a given air pressure a standard
aircompressor isn't putting out a sufficient Volume of air?
Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,
Have you heard of a tool company called Harbor Freight? Most tools are
imported and about 1/2 or less the cost of "regular" tools. They sell HVLP
spray guns from $35 or $40 bucks and had a whole compressor and gun for $99
at the local store here in Atlanta yesterday. They are at
harborfreight.com on the net. The HVLP will at least lower the amount of
paint you need and keep the air a bit safer in the paint booth.
Good luck

Direct drive engines specifically designed for aircraft normally turn much
slower, either by reduction or design.
It is the same old thing, give and take, give the rpm take the power, lower
rpm they couldn't brag on the output!
I would NEVER go over max RPM on a prop, and I never plan on going over
max rpm on an engine either. Lots of parts jumping up and down in an engine,
and they were made for a max RPM.
I feel the engineers are much smarter than I am, and I've lived over 24000
hours flying and plan on a few more :-)
Tip speed is one reason for the prop speed limits, figure the diameter of a
prop, take the RPM and figure the tip speed This is the main reason for 3
bladed props on the larger engines, not performance it is Noise tips approaching
the speed of sound make a terrible racket listen to a large seaplane someday ~
Cessna 185, and so on. It also puts lots of stress on the tips. Write the
prop manf. and see what they say.

I was surprised to find my $19.95 1 Qt. HVLP spray gun worked so well. I have
a compressor like the one you describe. I built my plane using air tools. My
poor compressor worked very hard but it is still working fine. The gun is the
kind with the cup on the top. The gun on top uses less paint and is easier to
clean but the type with the cup on the bottom is fine too. It is important that
you have a regulator (diaphragm type, $30 from paint store if you gun doesn't
have one, mine didn't) and a water separator. The water separator has to be
about 10 feet from the compressor so that the water vapor can condense and be
collected in the separator. I have heard many people say you must have the big
name spray guns to put on a nice paint job. It is not true for an amateur. It
is more important to prep the surface, set up the gun's spray pattern properly
and use decent technique. If you can organize your paint job so that you are
mostly painting on a horizontal surface, I am sure you will like the end
result. That is, of course, if you can't afford a professional paint job.

A Stratus drive is used to reduce prop speed with a Subaru engine. Unless
you plan to use a Subaru engine I would not recommend you follow up. Tom

TO ATTEND THE WORKSHOP JANUARY 29-30! I CANT WAIT!
Wheeeuuu! . . . .That felt good. Hopfully one day I cant get exited about actually
owning my own plane . . . that I built . . . with my own two hands! But,
