It seems that diluting Cortec-373 with ethyl alcohol does work, as
the best dilutant for me has been pure windshield-wiper antifreeze
concentration containing denaturated alcohol. I have so far tested
a dozen different dilutants with the objective of making brushing
or rolling thin Cortec-373 layers possible.
Cortec sells their own dilutant called S20, but it is only delivered
in 19 litre containers. Water is recommended for cleaning guns, and
the stuff itself is also said to accept 25% water when spraying.
Might work for spraying, but when looking with a stereo microscope
there are signs of hydrophobia and bead forming on a brushed surface
whenever even a small amount of water is introduced.
These signs are missing if no water is used.
For the moment the method we have devised with Jon Croke is to use
the pure stuff together with a painting pad and using a small brush
in tight corners. This will give a reasonable thin layer, very suitable
for faying surfaces. Not toxic and no odor. But wait with riveting until
the aluminium pieces are dry. And they do dry really fast when no water
is used or when a alcohol based dilutant is used.

I checked my winshield wiper wash and it contains 'cleaning agents', a blue
color in addition to the alcohol, so this is not suitable. I think it very
common that these additives are found in this product.
Is denaturated ethyl alcohol in a more pure form available? I take it that
the common isopropyl alcohol is not the same thing. I will check the
builders/paint supply stores and carefully start reading labels to see if I
can find a match.
Thanks Max for your research.

I was wondering if anyone knew where to get the carburetor air box for a
601HD with a Jabiru 3300 engine.

The following was posted by someone to the Sonex list on yahoo recently.
I would be interested in comments from builders on this list as to why they
selected the Zodiac XL .

Dave,
I comment only because you mention the HDS, as alternative to the XL.
The HDS has a thicker wing and is slower than the XL, countered only
by a good amount of stowage in the wings. The XL is simpler, but more
efficient with the availability of flaps. I was building my HDS when the XL
came onto the scene, so switching was not an option. Most of the other
aspects between XL and HDS are not significant, but the XL will meet
Sport Aircraft guidelines. I expect my HDS to have a glide angle something
like a space shuttle and some day a set of constant cord HD wings may
desirable.
Still, if I had to decide between HDS and a Sonex, the HDS would win hands
down in all categories of visual, comfort, roominess, and power options.
The XL in all flight characteristics would be an improvement over the rest.
My bias is perhaps obvious for Zenith and the good people they represent,
but
the choice is definitely yours.
respectfully,
Larry C. McFarland at www.macsmachine.com

I have an EA81 complete firewall forward installation for sale. You
just need to bolt it up to your Zodiac 601, get a prop and you're
flying.
The engine has about 60 hours since it's rebuild and runs
perfectly. The drive is the later Dave Johnson 2.1:1 with the heavy
shaft and lower bearing. The cooling system, mount, dual coil
ignition, and cowls are all included, everything you need to run it.
$3000 OBO
It's still flying right now, as a matter of fact I managed a short
hop at 1035hrs Dec 17. (better than the guys at Kittyhawk, anyway)
I plan to remove it from the plane sometime after Christmas.
I got a deal I couldn't refuse on an 0-200, so the Sonex is going on
the back burner for a bit, until I get WSS up with it's new
powerplant.

Hello, David
May I suggest you discuss the subject with Chris Boultinghouse -
http://members.tripod.com/zodiacbuilder/
He started building and CH601 (HDS?), but had to sell the project.
Then, a little while later, he started building a Sonex.
He also worked for ZAC for a while.
Thus, he might be able to give you some interesting insights to his decision.
As for myself, I was already building the HD when the XL came out. The Sonex was,
most of all, too
"green" at the time I started.
You also mentioned the KR. I considered it for a while, even subscribed to the
KR list to get
better acquainted with it. As far as I'm concerned, there are too many compromises
in that desgin,
not to mention it is not suitable to a low time pilot (as myself).
Good luck
Carlos

Would appreciate some advice on the surface prep required to use Cortec. I am
ready to take the front fuselage apart to debur and coat prior to riveting. I've
been following the thread on Cortec, but no one has mentioned the prep required.
Thanks in advance. Al Young 601XL

For anyone feeling a bit discouraged with their Zenith kit:
It's sometimes useful to realize that builders of other kits have their
hassles and points to grumble about. Even an industry-leading kit aircraft
company isn't perfect. I came across the following web site by an RV-6
builder. Even a quick skim through his website shows talk about slow
service, unclear marketing, only fair quality factory riveting, unlabelled
parts, plans errors, and so on ...

The words from 'headquarters':
Make sure the surface is clean before application. We generally rough
up the surface with a 3M Scotch-Brite, general purpose hand pads,
No.7447 then degrease with lacquer thinner.
If necessary add a little water to dilute and stir. Stiring may also
help to reduce the flow.

Greetings,
From the product data sheet:
"Initially the material is very thick, however it thins significantly upon
mixing allowing spray application."
I am going to try a power mixer (something on the end of a drill), as this
is what they recommend to thin.
I was also concerned about mixing in chemicals, and altering the corrosion
protection characteristics, but from
reading the MSDS, 373 is about 5% denatured ethanol (denatured alcohol??).
So if you mixed in a little extra
alcohol (pure ethyl alcohol or denatured alcohol), I assume it wouldn't
alter the chemical characteristics much.
I remember a post explaining all the various "alcohols" which I'll go back
and look for.
Im going to try mixing only first.
Eric

I also remember seeing some diagrams. I thought it was in the Zenair
Newsletter, but after searching all the
back-issues I could find, I think the pictures may have been on someones
website.
I remember them because the diagrams (I think) came from Chris Heinz, and
were rather crude pencil
drawings.
They were essentially square at the top roll-bars, one for each seat. Sort
of like the ones you see in sports
cars.
This is my recollection, which may not be accurate. Would appreciate if
anyone else has any info on these
type. I plan on putting something in my 601XL (roll-bar).
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Larry,
We left the "tail" of the rivet inside the floor, we are going to use
a light carpet in the floor, with light foam under it, so the rivet
will be under it...
