      Dear Listers,

The phone company was out here bright and early this morning and repaired
the wires and the T1 connection is back up and rock solid!

Again my apologies for any inconvenience the disruption may have caused.

      Best regards,

Regarding the "A" or "B" or "C" suffix on part numbers: As I understand ZAC
system (or others for that matter) the suffix denotes a running change to the
      same part.

Some previous editions of drawings may have had a particular part number
which is not used on a later edition, therefore the obvious "skip" in numbers.

What would be helpful is if ZAC would list ON THE DRAWING the numbers
skipped, omitted, etc., and include a running history of "this page replaces page

xxx..." in addition to the separate downloadable "revisions" which I find
difficult to correlate to anything. Anybody else have this problem?

Of course, the nearer one gets to finishing, and the smaller the pile of
un-used parts gets, the less one cares about current changes being made to
something one built a year ago. The ideal situation would be that you get a set
      of
drawings and a pile of parts that match in the first place. A short pause here

while I dismount the soap box.

      Is this confusing?

      Looking for some RF help.

I've hooked my Vertex VXA-210 handheld transceiver up to an external 1/4
wave antenna I bought from aircraft spruce. It has some annoying
problems that I don't have with the rubber antenna supplied with the
radio. First, I'm often getting static background that just can't be
squelched blasting in my ear. Usually depends on power setting of the
engine but not always. Second, when I was really close to the Ottawa
tower the other day I couldn't read the ATC voice at all. To my
untrained ear it sounded like way too much power was coming into the
unit and the waves were being clipped. Once I got a half mile or so away
      everything was okay again.

One thing I did not do is ensure my coax RG58 cable was of a proper
length (ie. in increments of a wave 1.25m or so). I'm wondering if this
might be the cause of my problem or if I should cut the antenna down to
being a 1/8 wave instead of the current 1/4 wave.

I don't know anything about RF so any help is appreciated.

The length of the coax doesn't have to be a particular multiple of a
wavelength, any old length will do.

Cutting the antenna to 1/8 wave will do no good at all. A whip antenna must
be an odd multiple of 1/4 wave or be loaded so that the radio thinks it is
an odd multiple of 1/4 wave to be efficient. A blade type antenna will be
shorter than 1/4 wave due to the thickness of the radiating element.

It could be that your radio is set up to make the best possible use of the
crappy rubber antenna and a good external antenna is feeding it too much
signal, but this is just wild speculation.

If you have access to USENET news groups you might try asking this question
on rec.aviation.homebuilt. There are some regulars there that know a whole
lot more than I do about this subject. In particular, Jim Weir, who writes a
lot of electronics articles for KitPlanes magazine monitors that news group
and often answers questions of this sort. You could also try asking it on
one of the ham radio groups.

      Frank

Mine does a similar thing as well. I have a Yeasu, which looks very much
like a Vertex. Maybe related some how. I have not tried the rubber antenna.
Mine only does it for a couple of minutes after take off, then again as I
approach for landing. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but it seemed like it
was altitude related. Usually about 1000-1500 ft agl I get a lot of noise
that can't be squelched. As I leave the airport area, it goes away and
doesn't happen again until I'm about to enter downwind. I need to see if it
occurs at other airports. I should also try my rubber antenna. Let me know
if you come up with a fix.
