Hello All,
I am ready to drill the bottom pilot holes in the skin for the elevator but
I am not confident about the position.
What is the dimension from the rear end of the elevator tip spar to the rear
end of the skin?
I show 35mm. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Martin Bima

Michel,
Good to hear from you! You might consider making what would be the tray
bottom in my design and modify it to include an inverse box section to
hold/guide the batteries tray as in an elevator shaft. This way you attach
at the
top of 6V7-1 and reach over to bottom flange of 6F1-6 to use common rivet
lines for the tray.
Then the "boxed" .040 battery support and belly cover could slide up into
place and
be secured by 4 or 6 lock nuts and AN525 screws. Pictures of my dual
battery tray
are in the electrical section and large assembly/fuselage to center section
segments.
You have a great idea for externalized access going there. Wish I'd
thought of it.
Very interested in what you've done with the disributor, pickups and control
modules. When you have the time to comment further on it please do.

I'm going to be in Las Vegas Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon April 23 thru 26 and I'd
like to look at other builders aircraft before I get into my own. If you
are interested in helping a future 601HD plans builder and you're going to
be around Las Vegas on those dates please contact me off list.
I will re-post this message closer to those dates.

Martin, I measure 35 mm on one end and ~40 mm on the other. Try checking the
distance from elevator leading edge to the trailing edge.
To bring the skin tight to the ribs I used a strap & turnbuckle fixture to
coax the skin into place. To prevent twist the elevator should be strapped to
the flat workbench at this point, and at the same time.
My elevator came out good, no twist, no gaps.
The geometry of the ribs could result in some difference in the dimension you
wonder about. The trailing edge needed to be trimmed a bit to bring the top
and bottom skins together. I went for a straight trailing edge as I trimmed it.
The elevator will be different on each side when the trim tab is installed.

Subject: | Rudder hinge plates 701 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Johann" <johann@gi.is>
Hello list members.
I need your advise on the rudder hinge plates for the Z-701.
When aligning the rudder hinge plates on the rear fuselage, I noticed a
little twist in the fuselage from level above landing gear to the aft
part of the fuselage.
I assume this happened when I riveted the rear fuselage together.
The longerons should have been riveted together all at the same time
instead of one at a time, and all in a jig, to avoid the twist.?????
Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did you solve it? How did
you install the hinge plates so that the rudder hinge was vertically
correct?
Ref: page 7-F-4.
Another question:
On page 7-F-14, Edition 4 06/2001.
Did you install the 7-F-14-1 = cowl support, 7-F-14-7 = Lower Dzus
plates, and 7-F-14-2 = Lower Cowl Support.
Reason I ask is that in the new photo assembly guide, those parts are
not there.
I wish you all a Happy New Year.
Best regards,
Johann G.
Iceland.

Dave,
My experience on the phone with Aeroflash wasn't much better. She actually
said: "the only problem we have is when these homebuilders decide they have
to buy everything years in advance of using the strobes and they hit them
with full voltage". I shared with her that I am a homebuilder and that
there was no documentation included with my strobes that warned me of this
issue. Also I educated her that homebuilders typically do not build an
entire aircarft in less than a year, and it is not obvious to a "normal"
person that you have to worry about how long a power supply sits around.
It was one of those moments that one wants to jump through the phone line
and choke the person on the other end. I really don't want to fix the power
supply myself, but I'm pretty much doing it out of spite because I can't
bring myself to pay them more money. If I would have sent it in and gotten
it back COD, I would have blown a gasket.

Subject: | R912 oil tank brackets on 701 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: ZSMITH3rd@aol.com
Have most builders had to cut off part of the bottom end of the LEFT & RIGHT
oil tank brackets to make things fit when mounting the 912 oil tank?
Secondly, is the hose clamp across the oil tank filler neck the only thing
holding the entire tank assembly? The "photo guides" I have don't show any sort
of strap or other retention device. Any anti-rattle suggestions? Looks a
little flimsy, at best.
Finally, just in case the internet gets clogged up tomorrow and hinders
serious message traffic, a very prosperous and Happy New Year to all.

Your conversation with Aeroflash was identical to mine. I would think keeping
the flash units protected from the elements would have been good enough. I
would have loved to have an excuse to power them up once in a while when I was
building and making airplane noises. How would we have known? She gave me the
impression that everything would be great if it wasn't for the #$%!
homebuilders.
Lately I have had friends flying with me in my 701. It is great to see they
are just as excited about how well it flies as I am. Chris has designed a GREAT
plane that is perfect for the type of flying I want to do right now. I flew
2.2 hours today and burned 6.5 gal. Now that makes me smile! The day included
lots of departure stalls (0 mph indicated, 500 fpm climb) steep turns, touch
and go's, and a 20 MI trip out and back to visit friends. It seems I can land
just as short with 15deg flaps as I can with 30deg. I guess the 30 deg. setting
would be used over very tall obstacles? It is also easy to lose airspeed just
before flair with the 30 deg. setting. I plan to use the full flap setting
sparingly.
BTW wouldn't it be great to have a glove box with the flush door on the
outside of the plane as a place to keep the fuel checker and fuel qty sticks? Maybe
attached to the aft bulkhead of the baggage compartment? I wish I thought of
it before I painted mine. Incidentally, Van's sells a very good glove box. :-)

I have had a blast with my 601HD. My son and I are flying up to Minnesota
tomorrow to return extra paint from when I painted it this Fall. (I used
Aerothane, and I'm happy with the results)We're going over to Cabella's from
there on the way back. Hopefully the weather pans-out.
I suppose I'll pull the power supply out of the wing on New Years and see
what lies inside. If I would have dreamed that 70 hours later I'd be
removing a power supply I might have made it a bit easier to remove and
install them; live and learn I guess.
The fuel economy of the plane and canopy are the things I have enjoyed the
most. To fill-up after a 3 hour trip and take less than 12 gallons is very
nice. I attached a pic of the bird for you to check out. I'm going to make
some wheel fairings this summer.
Happy Flying!
Greg

I did power up my units (with 12 volts AS SPECIFIED IN AEROFLASH
DOCUMENTATION) and they do function but I'm a long way from installing the
wing on the fuselage. I hope to not experience a failure but am concerned
with the plethora of reports on this list. It would be wise to log all

failure of these devices in the event that outside consumer support for
remedy for a claim might be easier to substantiate. Certainly the
discussion on the list would tend to support those of you who have already
experienced failures and might seek remedy...

Sorry I can't help on the twist problem. I did look at the plans and see that
I did actually install both the 7-f-14-1 and -2 parts. With the way my cowl
attaches I feel fairly sure that they will help with the rigidity of the
installation. About the 7-f-14-7 lower dzus plates, I see that I did not add
those to my plane. I also looked through the very small pile of parts left to
install and did not find these parts. Evidently these parts were not something
Zenith felt the "need" to include in the kit, and this is the first time that
I have noticed that they were missing. I also did a little looking at the way
my cowl attaches and noticed that this is also the least substantial attach
point of my whole cowl. Fortunately I built in a little redundancy on my cowl
attachment so this will not adversely affect the strength of my cowl.
Mike Sinclair
Hoping to have the wiring fairly well wrapped up over the Christmas break.
Should be hanging the wings and doing final rigging in the next month or so.
Painting early March and hopefully spend the spring flying off the restricted
time. Am going to add suitable access panels so that I can get to my Aeroflash
unit when it craps out because "I was so stupid as to buy it and install it in
the wings a couple of years before I actually flew"!
