Martin:
I ran into -exactly- the same situation you described when I went to skin my 701
elevator a few months back (building from a kit). Unfortunately, I didn't discover
the problem until after drilling/clecoing the skin. After rechecking
and not finding anything wrong with my measurements, I cross-checked some of
the measurements in the plans and found that there appears to be a descrepancy
of about 8mm between where the assembly instructions advise to place the leading
edge bend (which is where the actual bend in the kit-provided skin is) and
where the bend should actually be.
I cut and bent a new skin offset from the original, back-drilled the holes from
the original skin, and everthing then went together perfectly.
Having a blast--with this exception the plans (and kitted parts) have been great.

Most of the skins are 6061T6 .016, the seat, ribs, ~3/4 angles (called
"L's") and floor pan are .025, the cabin sides are .032. The plans do tell
you what the thicknesses are. .016 is most of the metal on the 701. There
are .040, .062 etc. but only for specific places.

Subject: | 701/R912 fit-up? |

Have any other builders experienced a problem with the two front R912
cylinder head lower cooling hoses being a really tight fit where these hoses route
past the rear Barry mount?? Most noticeable on the left side; hose is almost
squeezed flat.
I have checked all measurements for the various parts/pieces associated with
this portion of the assembly. Looks like maybe I need to replace lower hoses
for front cylinders with slightly longer hoses so as to curve around heads of
Barry mount bolts.
Of course this will increase quanity of coolant needed, thereby increasing
weight, increasing fuel consumption, etc, etc. Where does it end?
Any input appreciated.

Hi;
Yes, I had that same problem with the 601 engine mount.
You can remove the waterpump fitting from the engine, warm up the points where
the
hose connectors enter the fitting and then rotate the connectors upwards. This
aims
the hoses upwards to pass over the engine mounts. I made a wooden dowel fit into
the
connectors to get a grip for rotating them. When they are warm enough they will
rotate
easily.

Z,
I also was little impressed with the routing options for these hoses. I used
a scrap hose sleeve over the hose where it contacts the bolt head, to avoid
abrasion and secured the sleeve with a wire tie. The FAA inspector gave me a
'atta boy' for this as he said this is a potential area of failure... where
a vibrating item is in contact with a rubber hose. Also, those hoses are
metric and my NAPA auto store couldnt match them for proper diameter
size.... !!

Thanks, gentlemen! It is comforting to know that having four days off work
two weeks in a row didn't cause mental collaspe.
All comments appreciated. I have reviewed all the ZAC construction photos
and, yes, it is a tight fit. Another problem solved via the Internet.
Have managed to clean workshop, haul off all trash, donate an 18 ft long
one-piece table to the local volunteer fire department (bring on the fund-raisers
- they'll have a place from which to serve burgers, BBQ, beer and baloney).
I did get all the remaining parts into ONE small box, and sorted other stuff
into boxes marked "Instruments", "Electrical", "Fuel", "Brakes" and
"Misc".
The last one is the tuffy.
This next is not a "rub-it-in" ----- it was 79 degrees in North Texas
yesterday, 75 today. I fear Mother Nature will soon remind us of the calendar.
Thanks again,
Zed Smith
