No idea about effect on performance. A number of others have done similar things. Gary Hornbeck's 601 has a sloped fairing, more like a wing root fairing in style. Or is there someplace else I can check who knows about these helicopters? Thanks, Mike Fortunato wizard-24@juno.com

This company, I believe is offshoot of the original which distributed Scorpion Kits. Early Scorpions had an engine which was not aircraft, but oddly an Evenrude V or something like that. If parts were the only problem, I'd say that the $8000. is a good deal if the hours on it are not runout. Good luck, Larry McFarland - 602HDS Do Not Archive

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff Reuschle" <jreuschle@mindspring.com> Steve, The engine is a Rotax 503 Air Cooled 2 Cycle in a J-3 Kitten Ultralite. It has great power to weight ratio but it does not have the reliability of the fourstroke. They are also function very differently than four strokes and require very different maintenance. One engine out was due to pilot error. Another due to a failed fuel pump. Three were of an unknown cause ( the engine would flood for no known reason) and the problem went away when I went back to individual filters on the dual carb setup. It is as if the dual filter was acting in reverse to the way the muffler on a two stroke scavenges the exhaust from the engine but in this case sucked fuel from the engine. Each time there was fuel dripping from the carbs. New carbs didn't solve it. A new dual filter didn't solve it. When I went back to individual filters the problem went away. Go figure! The Rotax 912 series of engines have much better reliability experience. They have recently increased their TBO. The TBO on a two stroke is only 300 hours. Some make it fine. Lots don't. A two stroke engine is much more sensitive to normal maladies that happen with engines for example like exhaust bolts loosening. They don't like this. A four stroke keeps on going. Two strokes have more vibration adding to its problems. If you need reliability, go with the four stroke. Subject: Re: engines
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bob Reinero" <reineros@pacbell.net> I have chosen to use the Geo with a Raven reduction. I was able to find a engine with only 1200 miles on it at a local salvage yard. It was still in the car which had a front end collision. The air conditioning radiator was dented and the air bags were deployed. Here in California they will not repack a deployed airbag for insurance reasons, and so I had them hook up a battery and start up the engine whit it did instantly. It still had the break in oil in the pan. The engine and all accessories including the radiator was $700. I think I once paid that much for a set of rings for my Bonanza, I've tried hard to forget that bill. The engine is high Tec injected and computer controlled. Jaron at Raven has a well thought set-up and will give you the Cooks tour if you give him advance notice. He is working on a turbo set-up for $1,000 and will also get a deal for you on a three blade adjustable prop from The guy in Long Beach- can't remember the name. Jaron is also working on an engine mount. I don-to know if it is ready yet or not. His workmanship is excellent. I think I will have about $5'000 in the power plant when ready to fly. I hope this is of some help. ----- Original Message ----- From: "ronnie wehba" <rwehba@wtxs.net> Subject: Re: Zenith-List: engines > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "ronnie wehba" <rwehba@wtxs.net> > > will order plans next week, have already built a minimax and a airbike,so i > am looking forward to a sheet metal plane.just cannot will not afford a big > rotax. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Brett Ray" <brett@hog-air.com> > To: <zenith-list@matronics.com> > Subject: Re: Zenith-List: engines > > > > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Brett Ray" <brett@hog-air.com> > > > > How close are you to being done? > > > > > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "ronnie wehba" <rwehba@wtxs.net> > > > > > > besides the larger rotax what are the better choices of engines for > > the 701? anyone using anything from raven redrives"geo, suzuki? thanks > > > > > > > > > _- > > ======================================================================= > > > > _- > > ======================================================================= > > > > _- > > ======================================================================= > > > > _- > > ======================================================================= > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > -- Thanks > > Brett Ray > > owner Hog Air > > > > > >

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Greg Ferris" <ferret@wmtel.net> I did the wings next. The wings are easier to build and store IMHO,. The order I built the major components in was: tail, outboard wings, center wing, rear fuselage, firewall, join rear fuselage/center wing/firewall (then sit in it and take pictures), instrument panel, canopy, engine/cowl. I don't know how much variation there is in these steps from builder to builder, but that's what worked for me. The wing spar cary-though comes with the wings and is match drilled with the wing spars. You need this section to complete the fuselage anyway. Besides, the wings are easier to build and can be more easily stored out of the way while you are working on the fuselage. It's much harder to get the fuselage out of the way to make room for the construction of the wings if you have limited space. -- Bryan Martin N61BM, CH 601 XL, Stratus Subaru.
