Subject: | Aeroflash Strobes - Position Lights |
I have replaced my capacitors a couple of times over the 4.5 years of
flying. Mostly dues to long periods of downtime (otherwise known as "working
on the house rather than flying").
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "HINDE,FRANK (HP-Corvallis,ex1)" <frank.hinde@hp.com>
The capacitors are about $10 from any electrical components supply
place...Just take the old cap out and read whats on the side...I think its
450v at 0.5 micro farad. But its been a while since I replaced one so don't
quote me on that.
But it's a 20 min job to replace the cap. Much better than $50 a pop!

I dont see what would be special about their cap, unless it has something to
do with vibration (ruggedized). I guess it could also be a special form
factor (ie large uF value, high voltage, small form factor). Caps are also
rated by ESR which specifies their performance over frequency (how much R is
in series with the model of perfect capacitance). This has more to do with
high frequency applications and wouldnt affect anything here, except perhaps
the discharge time (insignificantly).
I think if I could find a suitable size with like voltage rating, I would
atleast give it a try. From what I understand the powersupplies are at the
wingtips where you shouldnt have much engine vibration anyway. The temp is
something to look at too, as there is a large heatsink on the pictures I
have seen.
Too little too late, but info for others with the same trouble.

Ben,
Still using the Lyc. The Rotax is for a friend's 701 I'm helping with.

Subject: | Engine Monitoring |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Trampas" <tstern@nc.rr.com>
My father in law started building a 601 last year and he was looking at
engine monitors and we decided to build a better engine monitor than was on
the market with color display and user defined configurations. One of the
key reasons for building a new monitor was he had problems reading the text
of units which were currently on the market. We have been working on this
monitoring system for the last year and have several units working. However,
I have run into a problem which I thought you guys may be able to help me
with.
The problem I have is that in an attempt to make the unit as flexible as
possible I think I may have made it too complicated. Thus I was wondering
what people wanted in an engine monitor. For example the unit which I have
completed has 16 thermocouple inputs, two coil inputs, and 15 generic inputs
which can be configured to work with almost any sensor. The problem is that
the configuration is not trivial. That is the configuration requires the
user to know how sensors operate and their calibration curves. It almost
requires an engineering background to understand. Therefore I was wondering
how many people would want to configure there own sensors verses how many
would just purchase the sensors recommended?
I am planning on starting to sell these units, hopefully for a profit, but I
am worried the support for the configuration would be high. For example the
configuration setup is currently beyond my father in law's abilities, but he
is not high tech type of person either.
I also was wondering how many people would want to monitor other things
besides the engine with the same box. For example how many people would want
air speed, density altitude, and angle of attack, etc. Currently we were not
planning on implementing these features ourselves, but through the
configuration the user if they wanted could add these features and others
themselves.
Thanks

riveting a plane together, check this out. Absolutely amazing.

I think you're competing with very low prices now.
Most builders are barely able to comprehend the electronics box
and are afraid to commit to a system that has no track
record. Documentation is everything. A guarantee of continued support
is another that would worry. Would-be business
people take chapter 11 all the time and with a history of so many well
intended guys like Bede, GlassAir, etc you've got a lot to overcome.
But, if you've got the grit and the know how, have at it.
Good Luck

The main reason there is a propeller out front is to keep the pilot cool.
If the engine quits, watch him sweat.
That is all the instrumentation you need.

I am just starting the building process. I have not yet bought the plans (but am
signed up for the workshop) so I need some suggestions. If one were going to
buy a small bending break to plansbuild--planning on buying longer parts from
ZAC--and had a choice of a 30" or 40" brake (Harbor Freight Central Machinery)
which one would be best? Are there many parts that I could bend myself with
40" but not 30" brake? Does anyone have experience with these Central Machinery
brakes? Is the 40" brake strong enouph in the middle?
