John,
That's a really good price for a set of HDS wings. Pleased to see
you're still in the game. The new Sport Pilot rules will take more
of us to HD wings one day.

A question for those of you who studied the Sport Pilot
category: if one declared the 601HDS with a 1020 lbs
max gross, which gives the 51 mph max stall speed
without flaps, would it otherwise qualify? What would
be the advantages and disadvantages of doing that for
a person who already has the PPL?

One possible advantage I'm looking at is the potential loss of medical and
ppl later on...although you may be able to reclassify the plane then if it
happens...

I designed and made my own bending break. First 8 feet long. Then I cut it
down and re-welded it to 2000 mm long. It can handle full length .025
pieces.
It is very a very light weight truss design with a turnbuckle for adjustment
of the truss tension (for thick and long pieces).
I also bought the aluminum 30" brake from Princess Auto (Canadian Harbor
Freight) which is perfect for shorter thicker pieces - less set up time too.
E-mail off group if you want some pics.

A PPL isn't much good if someone can't pass the physical. One advantage of
the Sport license is being able to use a valid drivers license in place of
a physical. I think the only thing that would prevent the HDS from
qualifying is the stall speed, which needs to be no more than 52 mph
without flaps. Zenith list the HDS as having a stall speed of 54 mph. I
would think there are modifications which could lower the stall speed to
that range, a lot of certified planes have them.

They would have to kill this pit bull, to keep from flying.

Just checked the 701 area of ZAC's photoguides. Found that it was last
updated January 14, 2004, but couldn't find any file with a 2004 date, especially
14 Jan.
Anybody got a clue?
Thanks in advance. BTW, whatever happened to the new engine monitor with
thousands of inputs? I was looking forward to being able to keep tabs on "paint
adhesion coefficient" while in flight.

I'm in the process of installing a heater in my 601. I just need to know
which hose to put the shut off valve for water going to the heater core. Is
it the one with the water pump or the one coming from the spyder to the
radiator?
Thanks
John

Subject: | 701 fuselage stiffeners |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Tebenkof@aol.com
Hello list members,
It has come to my attention, as I come close to finishing the rear fuselage,
that some (many?, most?) 701 builders have added stiffeners for the large,
flat and otherwise unsupported areas of the rear fueslage. Is there info
available on what approach builders are taking to this? I have seen the "X" shapes
on some photos on the ZAC site. Are most people doing this? Does it seem to
make a real difference? Are there other designs people have used?
As a first time builder I am a little surprised by the number of
unanticipated decisions to be made. But actually it makes me feel pretty good.
It really
is more than a big version of the plastic models of our childhoods. On the
other hand I am glad this site is here, and I will appreciate any help with
this.
Also thanks to the people who responded to my question about amphib floats
and tailwheels.
