As you know, many of us builders appreciate the motivation. 414 landings in 300 hours, sounds like you're getting lots of practice. Have you been practicing engine outs, and if so what engine do you have and what have you learned about the most realistic way to practice? (ie, what rpm to have the prop spinning to simulate an engine out, etc) Bob Miller ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Morelli" Subject: Zenith-List: Still Lovin It!!!!!! > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bill Morelli" > > Well today, 1/21/2004, was the third anniversary of the first flight for > my 601 HDS. > > Total flight time is 300.9 hours, 192 flights with 414 landings. > > It is still loads of fun and always puts a smile on my face when I fly the > Zodiac. > > Do not archive. > > Bill > > ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 08:22:58 AM PST US From: "Bob Miller" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: stall speeds and sport pilot --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bob Miller" Jeff, I want to add my appreciation to those expressed by others. It's easy to get distracted by irrelevancies and miss the most significant factors. Your level-headed approach keeps us all safer as well as focussed on what's genuinely important. John, N601RT holds 11 gallons in each of two leading edge tanks and 7 plus gallons in the single left side wing locker tank. Total 29 plus gallons. Each tank feeds a 4 port fuel selector valve, centerally mounted on the floor of the plane. Output of fuel selector goes to fuel filter, T fitting to parallel electric fuel pumps, outputs joined at T fitting, through fuel flow sensor the to the firewall mounted gascolator. From gascolator to the mechanical Rotax fuel pump then to T fitting to feed each carburator. I also have a fuel pressure sender after the Rotax fuel pump, sensing the pressure to the carburators. I typically average 4.8-5.0 GPH. My longest flight has been 5.7 hours. (I was really glad to have Oregon Aero seats after flying 20 hours in two days, when returning from OSH->HIO. This included the 5.7 hour leg.) N601RT: CH601HDS, nose gear, Rotax 912ULS, All electric, IFR equipped, 160hrs. ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 02:45:34 PM PST US From: "Phil & Michele Miller" Subject: RE: Zenith-List: Flying the 701 --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Phil & Michele Miller" Bob, I can't tell you of such a site but I know Niol Lockington (owner of the accomodata site). Any tips before I start? Mick: One word - clecos. Order lots of clecos. Ok, maybe more than one word. I don't know how many I bought from ZAC (whatever was recommended) but I had to order about 200 more 1/8" from aircraft spruce. It seems I am always running out. Other tools which I could not live without are: Drill Press- Could be done without but I wouldn't want to. Air compressor -I love the sound of air tools because they sound so professional. The air drill is smaller and lighter than electric. I also have a right angle air drill. Jig saw- small cuts. Make sure you rig a way to hold the work down to the table. I use my table saw for long cuts even on thin work by clamping a board at the front of the blade and feeding the stock under the board. It keeps the thin piece from chattering. 40" bending brake from harbor- I started with a 30 and found it to small. I have made many mistakes and have remade parts with this brake. Which by the way, I you buy the complete kit, ZAC throws in enough scrap aluminum to build a second XL which is nice since I have probably remade half of the plane! Rivet spacing tool- handy Bench- I built 2 4x8 benchs that mate together with a inch overlap on the top plywood. I worked well to build the rear fuselage then I split it in the center to install the landing gear and front fuselage. It just seemed easier than the steel setup that ZAC shows. Then I put it back together to get started on the wings. Sharpie- Splurge and get a whole box. I think I am on my second. Angle Gage- One of those circle angle gages with a magnet on the bottom from Harbor that shows the degree of angle. I used this a lot but I can't seem to get it to stick to the aluminum. Must be something defective. Lots of different files: Chain saw files are also handy. And the best thing I found for smoothing a edge after cutting with hand cutter is the kind of knife sharpener with the V notch. 1/2" drill bit: After using all the deburring methods in the world I keep going back to the drill bit with a half twist by hand. Fast and I don't see that it cuts into the aluminum at all. It is a old dull one though. One other thing which you will need is a good vocabulary of profanity. Any tips before I start?** Mick: If you plan to get the whole kit at once or major sub-kits shipped to you, the first thing you need to be prepared is to unload a 10ft long 400lb+ crate off the back of a truck without the luxury of an electric lift. The truck driver seemed a little surprised when my house didn't have a delivery dock for him to back up to! Fortunately I had plenty of neighbors to help get the crate into my garage. By the way the crate itself makes a great base for a workbench and with the end pieces removed you can leave a lot of the pieces in it until you need them. Regarding tools, my preference is for a fast cordless electric drill over an air drill because my compressor is so noisy and my best building time is late in the evening. As Jack mentioned a small drill press and rivet spacing tools are a great help. Other things that haven't been mentioned are the green scotchbrite pads and "Goof-Off" for removing scratches and sticker-glue from the kit parts.
