--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Phil & Michele Miller" <millerpg@ps.gen.nz>
Larry,
I have the 100hp Rotax in my 701 (built by someone else). I would
definitely NOT recommend it for the 701 and here's why.
The 701 is a draggy airframe. 100hp will not get you flying faster.
100hp may get you off the ground slightly shorter but hey, how short do
you want your takeoff roll to be? You will beat most anything around in
a 701 with 80hp.
The 80hp has a compression ratio of 9:1 while the 100hp is 10.5:1. Tha
makes the 100hp quite harsh in startup and shutdown modes. That
harshness has contributed to cracking of my horizontal stab front
mounting brackets and a couple of other brackets in the stab/elevator
area and is the reason I have my plane back home in my workshop for
remedial work after only 72 hours.
100hp costs more than the 80hp. The money is better spent elsewhere on
your plane.
Cheers and good luck with your decision,
Phil Miller

then I think I should go with the 100Hp!! So, what does everybody
think? What are your opinions and reasons for either choice?

Larry,
Do consider the Jabaru 80 hp engine. It is light for the output and may
offset the extra weight you anticipate.

I ran mine down the inside of the fuselage until I got to the seat
backs. I then routed the wires through the passenger side but under the
channel that meets the canopy. There's enough room under to this channel
to place a number of wires with appropriate protection.

There already is a hole in the center section of the spar, the same one the rudder
cables and control stick torque tube runs through. I ran my wires (including
battery cables) through this hole under the torque tube and then along the
sides of the arm rest attached with cable clamps so they can't come into contact
with the controls or control cables. The wiring harness goes through the rudder
cable enclosure beneath and between the rudder cables and exits the front
of this enclosure and goes strait up between the rudder cables to the instrument
panel. I have the harness wrapped with spiral wrap in some places and automotive
type split corrugated tubing in others for protection.

I ran my antenna cables through this channel inside a length of 1/2" polyethylene
tubing. The GPS and VOR cables are on the passenger side and the comm antenna
cable is on the pilot side.

The control cable runs very high and the yoke has a lot of throw so it
makes it a little more difficult to come up with a good match. Thanks

Guys: Put your money in the plane instead of tools. Buy only what you need and
then when you can't do the next step. These planes have been built in primitive
places with nothing but hand tools and one solar powered battery drill. I
found a Dremel tool and a flex shaft
drill accessory the only extras aside from my carpentry tool box. I bought a pneumatic
rivet puller from ZAC and a good air compressor from Home Depot for no
good purpose. I don't think I used them for more than a couple hundred rivets.
Everything else was recommended

Please tell us more about these cracked mounting brackets. This is rather
troublesome to understand how a higher compression engine could do that. What did
Cris Heinz say about those cracked mounts?

I'll send you a direct e-mail with the template drawing and a couple of

You have to apply the hp to the air to be effective. The Jab gets max power
at 3300 rpm, calls for a small diameter prop. Flying SLOW in a 701 calls for
a BIG prop, turning slower.
I have a WOODCOMP in flight adjustable prop on a 601 HDS and it gives me the
best of both worlds. Check with the factory to be sure the pre set limits
will match the 701's airspeed limits.

Just a personal point but I am very nervous of in flight adjustable props
made of wood having seen a spectacular failure where the wood simply tore
out at the root, not the first time it happened either. Ok it was on a 225HP
application but the prop was sized appropriatly.
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "HINDE,FRANK (HP-Corvallis,ex1)" <frank.hinde@hp.com>
Seems the wood is glued into a thimble arrangement that turns in the prop
hub. The attachment relies on being glued into the thimble with a pin
through it. Essentially the blade is held in place by gripping it at one
end.
On a conventional wood prop you have a continuous piece that is face bolted
through the middle which maintains the continuity of the grain.
Personally I would avoid these types of wood props.

I've spent the morning tuning in the correct pitch of my Warp Drive three

times the carbs popped out of the rubber boot. I had attended a seminar
where Phil Lockwood made special note of insuring the clamp ring on the boot
must not be tightened more than 7mm distance between the two flanges on the
clamp. I made a special little tool 7mm wide just for the purpose of getting
the gap right. I've cleaned the carb neck and the boot ID real well and everything
seems great but sometimes the carb pops out on start-up and sometimes it
pops out when I shut the engine down.
What have others done?

Interesting,...Never had that problem on the Stratus motor, same carb, same

You might try a little silicone on the indentation on the carb tube...I
assume the raised ring inside the boot is actually engaging in the circular
slot in the carb body?
This is a\potentially a dangerous problem.
Are you sure the boots are not split thereby losing their grip on the carb?
I'd be tempted to wire the carbs onto the manifold if there was no obvious
answer.

clamp ring on the boot must not be tightened more than 7mm distance between
the two flanges on the clamp. I made a special little tool 7mm wide just
for the purpose of getting the gap right. I've cleaned the carb neck and
the boot ID real well and everything seems great but sometimes the carb pops
out on start-up and sometimes it pops out when I shut the engine down.
What have others done?

Since the requests for the Mike Fothergill 601 boot template and my photos have
been overwhelming, I am going to post them on my website so anyone can download
the files. I should have it on sometime tomorrow.
I'll let everyone know.
Regards,
Bill

Hi Lowell,
A couple of basic questions to clarify:
1. Is the 912S fitted with the common induction
manifold ? and ... (if "yes").
2. Is the manifold supported according to the
installation manual ?

Charles,
I have a boot drawing that Mike Fothergill gave me a way back. My wife made
me a vinyl boot from a template made from Mikes drawing. I came out very
nice.
I'll send you a direct e-mail with the template drawing and a couple of
photos of my finished boot.
Bill

Subject: | Upholstery material |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry McFarland" <larrymc@qconline.com>
Hi List,
I'm at a stage on the foam seats
that a decision needs to be made on the upholstery.
I like leather, but worry that it will be too hot in the summer
sun and deteriorate like any other hard surface. A velour fabric
on my wife's 91 Honda has worn like iron and it might be a better
selection if not less expensive. I see some of you have used
fabrics and some smooth surface materials as well. My upholsterer
wants to do thin leather but I'm not convinced.
I'd be very interested in seeing your opinions on this.
Thanks again,

Larry , I made the mistake of hopping into a 601HD one fine hot summer
day. The classy looking leather seats baking under the canopy and me in
sport shorts did not make a good combination! In fact the marks were on
the back of my legs for the better part of two weeks. I went with a fire
resistant low pile, no pill fleece. I have used this before and it wears
exceptionally well as you have seen in cars. One other Idea I did have
was to go with seat material made out of jeans. Remember the 1970 AMC
Javelin with the Levis interior! I had one of those and it was a great
upholstery. Just remember NO Copper rivets. Nice Job on the seat jigs by
the way!

Howdy folks: Any one familiar with the Dynon Efis-d10? If it works well it would
take care of all flight instruments including a Blind encoder with one screen.
Would save a bundle of money too. Any comments? Web site for company below.

I believe the latest update on the 701 drawings was November 2003. Nick told
me that a new set of updated drawings will be out in March of this year.

Hi listers,
I'm attending the January factory workshop later this week. Any folks

My wife and I will be arriving on Weds afternoon, staying at the Holiday

with us in the evening, give me a shout via email or call us at the
Holiday Inn in Mexico,MO.
Cheers,
