--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jarek M. Walter" <jarek.walter@sympatico.ca> I found Yarde staff very nice and helpful. If you decide to get stuff from them (when part of the package, the 6061-T6 sheets for skins were about $28USD per sheet), let them arrange the shipping (they have special rates with trucking companies (about 50% less what we would have to pay). My shipment arrived in perfect condition. The crate was heavy (more than 500 lb). All invoices, mill certificates etc, packing slips are provided on-line (they give you client id and password to access theirs web site). Anyway, my bill for all the aluminum for 701 (including the bar for the main landing gear) was about $900USD. I didn't get steel from them - they don't stock it. Jarek M. Did the Yard, have the .093 thick angle extrusions, for the spars, or did you go with .125 thickness too? Monty

I only ordered the rudder to begin with as I wasn't too sure of my building skills. I have decided that in time I can complete this aircraft if all goes well. My concern is the engine type I may use. I have considered the rotax 80hp but the cost is a major stumbling block. Have you or anyone you've heard from ever considered the 2180 vw engine which sells for under 5k. Its weight is less than 200lbs which is significantly more than the rotax but the cost is very attractive. Any advice or commets are greatly appreciated. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Lowell Metz" <lowellmetz@earthlink.net> In my opinion ( like bellybuttons, everyone's got one ) You will not be pleased with the T/O performance with a direct drive VW engine in the 701. For the STOL performance you want to swing a large diameter prop and the VW will not do it unless you add a PSRU ( prop speed reduction unit ). Likewise the Jabaru , another great engine, is not a great choice in the 701. We 701 drivers chose the thick camber and all that dirty stuff hanging off the plane so we can get in and out of short places and give up the slippery planes with better cruise. Aviation is a compromise and there are no free lunches, sad to say. Lowell Metz 701 FL.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: David Barth <davids601xl@yahoo.com> Hi List. Particularly 601 builders I think you STOL builders don't have this nasty issue. You know that place just over and behind the pilots left shoulder where the top skin over the baggage area has to do curve two ways at once before attachment to the forward curved tube and the longeron? If you have been there you will know what I mean. I think it has to be one of the trickiest areas on the 601s. Does anyone have any great advice on how to handle this so it doesn't look awful? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Jim Kepford <snowy_91@yahoo.com> With a 1.6:1 reduction drive would put prop RPM at 2625 rpm for takeoff and 2125 rpm for cruise. About the same as a Rotax 912 80hp. The bad part is that the VW is going to be heavier at roughly 191 pounds. But parts for the VW motor are a lot cheaper to buy. I can't remember the exact number by I've heard the crank on a 912 is some were around $2500 to $3000. I consider the cost of replacement parts a big consideration in the purchasing decision. ---------------------------------

It's a 3 cylinder, 2 stroke engine and cost with PSRU is just above $4000, including everything. The company keeps low profile - they mostly supply military and usage of this engine in manned aircraft voids warranty (however the engine is listed in Aircraft Spruce Catalogue). The company is saying that market for a small aircraft engine is too small for them to take financial risk liability insurance). Spy drones fly with this engine and they seldom crash. Anyway, just something to think about. Jarek

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dr. Perry Morrison" <perrymorrison@yahoo.com> Any engine driving a small prop will give poor climb and the un-redriven VW must use small props because its power band is in the > 3000rpm range. I recently did a check ride in a jabiru equipped cub look-alike. Again, small prop needed because of the high revs when directly driven. Absolutely appalling climb and not much better in cruise. Same a/c with a 912 is great. Re drone engines (below) bear in mind that many drones are not designed to have long lifetimes. They would never make a 1500hr TBO. The new predator drones used by the US military have rotax 912s. Perhaps they need the reliability because of long loiter times, and have better survivability in their high altitude role but historically drones have been disposable tools often with McCulloch 2 stroke engines (used to be popular in gyros). Might do well to see what drones they use these engines in. Perry Morrison --- "Jarek M. Walter" <jarek.walter@sympatico.ca> wrote: > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jarek M. That isn't so challenging, but the little patch on each side of the rear edge where the rubber trim is only holding onto aluminum is curious. What do you do there? And what does one do about getting the aluminum and the acrylic to stay together in a patch that is without screws or fasteners? Anyone glue the canopy to the aluminum in this area? This little corner each side of the canopy is troubling and I'm sure some of you 601 builders have been there. I'd be pleased to hear what was done before the fact. Thanks again, Larry McFarland - 601HDS and getting close....after 4-1/2 years...

After laying it out on a piece of cardboard according to the plan I found that the bend was wrong! After calling Zac they said they were aware of several that were bent wrong.
