This is Larry Martin in Arkansas. I too am building a 701. I am at the fuselage stage. I plan on putting an extra L angle half way between every standard L. Here's a little trick you might want to consider. 3M makes a thin double sided tape for putting molding on sides of cars. After you cut your length for your "L", clean it with aluminum wash on the down side and clean where it will sit. Drill out the rivets on the longerons where the "L" will sit. Put a strip of tape on the bottom of the "L" except for an inch on each end. Put you "L" where you want it and re-rivet just the ends. You can't remove it with a crow bar, especially after a little time, it sorta melts together. A couple of advantages, no external rivet line. Plus the tape will weigh less than twenty or so rivets. If you are interested it doing this let me know and I will get you the part numbers for the tape and wash. I've not been able to figure out how to post on the forum yet. I've tried it a couple of times, but it won't work. So I gave up, just don't have the time. I'm trying to post this. --- ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 10:36:06 AM PST US From: Joemotis@aol.com Subject: Zenith-List: 601 XL is a finally a coming --> Zenith-List message posted by: Joemotis@aol.com Greetings Listers Had a pleasent phone call from Shirley at ZAC yesterday and my airplane will be at the Roadway will call on Monday. A little note here, when you go to print the photo guides it is 300 plus pages. My work cheerfully agreed to print them and I'll have to let them know sometime, because 300 is a conservative estimate. www.Itoya.com has some great art display folders with plastic sleeves for the pages that lay flat and display two sheets at a time. The cost to do all of the photo guides and the blueprints was less than 100 bucks. Well worth it and looks very professional. Go to the art profolio evolution and the art profolio with index on the site or e mail me and I wll send you a pic of them all laid out on the workbench. Scott Laughlin has a wonderful article in this month's Kitplanes on building the 601 wingtips from scratch using composites. Easy to understand, this looks like a fun project for a first timer.. esp if you see what they charge for those pieces from Zac...! If Kitplanes had more articles like this then it would be a better magazine.... I hope Scott plans more articles like this in the future... maybe making the ribs from scratch, etc. Hats off to Scott! P.S. the very LAST sentence of the article must be a typo... probably a Kitplanes mistake? ________________________________ Message 10 ____________________________________ Time: 12:05:32 PM PST US From: "Scott Laughlin" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: 601 XL is a finally a coming --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Scott Laughlin" Joe: Printing out all the photo guides just generates a pile of scratch paper if you don't build your plane all in a few months. The assembly guides change - you need to check the web site often. It's best just to print out the section you are working on, then check for updates. I did the same as you and now have 300+ pages of scratch paper with color photos on the back. I think most of the photo guides have changed since I started building a year ago. Congratulations on the arrival of your partially built aircraft. OAT was ~ 45 deg F. I have been cruising at 4000 RPM and climbing out at 4600 RPM. Established service ceiling of 12,500 ft. yesterday. Was on climb out the entire time and the water temp never reached 210 deg F. Put weightlifting plates and dog food in the passenger seat today and struggled to get to 8000 ft. Think I will reduce the pitch on the Warp Drive prop to get better climb... My rad is located at the front of the fuse behind the engine and prop. Tried to mount it back three feet but had poor cooling there for some reason... I followed the plans as closely as I could. I added aileron trim, nav/strobe lights, main fuel tanks only, a vacuum system on the Jabiru 3300, a minimal legal IFR panel including nav/comm/gs, xponder, audio panel/MB receiver. I used the GRT EIS 6000 for monitoring engine, fuel pressure, vacuum pressure, fuel level, etc. I used the Control Vision EXP2BUS electrical system. I've not finished upholstery nor have I painted. Prop is a GT wood/composite 2 blade. For more details/specifics, mail me off-list. Good article about P-51 style rad installations. They described how a dead air space is created close to the planes skin, and the further back on the plane the thicker this dead air space is. So I believe if your rad was moved back about 3 feet it also should have been extended down from the skin several inches so it would have protruded thru this dead air. Much more to it than that but try getting your hands on an issue if you can. Also a 601 builder Larry McFarland has done lots of research on this subject and has a GREAT web site you must check out. http://macsmachine.com/ Look under the Subaru Engine link to view his rad installation design. He has also moved his rad back as you did & I'm very interested on how his cooling will turn out. He's due to be airborne some time this spring, also he's not far from me so I'm looking forward to getting a first hand look at his plane. And Larry if your out there, please chime in here if you wish ... and at the least be sure to let us know how well your design works. My engine is lightweight because I have spent the last 8 years developing it and all my intakes and parts are lightweight aluminum (dualport mpefi intake 1.5 lbs). I'm making another air inlet which will be interchangable with the first effort that could at best only be referred to as a scoop. Articles in Alternative Engines suggest that in addition to getting the intake away from the belly skin, it should allow the air to steady out and slow a bit before going thru the radiator. The scoop will probably only compress the air and create a lot of drag, so this second effort should address the smoother airflow. NSI did a housing similiar to this aft of the firewall that worked well and a friend in Australia named Jackie reported on this forum that he has of these under his 601HD and has not had any problems. His radiator is something near a 6 x 18 x 2-coil deep set directly to the airflow. My Rabbit radiator is 38" back of the firewall. The exhaust has been wrapped. A heat muff encases the total muffler which will keep heat out the radiator intake if not in the cabin. The heads were reworked by RAM to preclude loosing valve guides. The radiator has been sealed all round. Louvers were added at the back of the radiator to enhance airflow and tuft testing suggests they work. This all does wonders for a Stratus powered 601 Center of Gravity, but if anyone sees a problem with any of this for cooling, I'd very much appreciate the uptake, whatever it is. Thank you for the input. Larry McFarland
