Bob, I'm going to install the duel stick option. That will provide a convenient place to connect springs at the stick connections, and a movable pivot in the middle to provide the bias. Then all that required is a method to adjust the pivot. I also plan to install the EZ-pilot wing levelling autopilot, so for x-country, aileron trim won't be an issue. I like the idea of spring bias instead of movable tabs for trim (elevator and aileron). Craig S. John, I haven't heard of venturi icing, other than in a carb which has the added cooling action of vaporizing gasoline. I fly with a venturi in the Midwest in all VFR conditions/temps and have never experienced it. I typically run between 2 - 3 inches, which is a little on the low side. What is you're vacuum indicating? Do you have a vacuum DG? If so, and it works OK, you probably have an AI about to fail completely. Craig S. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Hal Rozema <hartist1@cox.net> Hello everyone: We just got the correct engine mount installed and the engine rehung and are starting all of the engine hook up wires and plumbing. I need some guidance for the best layout of the firewall. So many pieces, so little space. Suggestions and photos will be most welcome. Major problem... The Jabiru air box that came with the engine is impossibly large. No matter whether horizontal or vertical, half of it projects beyond the edge of the firewall. Is there a smaller version available? Must I figure out how to fabricate my own (not desirable)? I have help with a good man for wiring, power, electronics, and avionics (Gary Eisert, former Canadian Aircraft A&E). Another helper who has experience with several restorations and has installed a Jab engine in a Jab airframe (Al Ross). And another person who has volunteered to do any fiberglass or composite work for my project. Help, please. Hal Rozema theplanefolks.net

If you were to send a note to Kitplanes magazine to let them know you liked the article, maybe they would more readily accept my next idea. Brian Clark is the editor and the email listed in the magazine is: cindy@kitplanes.com Thanks again for your kind words. I bought a kit from ZAC but the fiberglass parts are not as good as I'd hoped. I may end up building a set of tips. Also, I saw a nice rudder tip on at least one 601 at Sun n Fun, Jeff Small maybe, and may want to do something similar. I agree with Jon, we need more articles like this in Kitplanes. Thank you for taking the time to write it. Mark 601XL, tail completed, waiting on new skins for wings. Do not archive Scott Laughlin has a wonderful article in this month's Kitplanes on building the 601 wingtips from scratch using composites. Easy to understand, this looks like a fun project for a first timer.. esp if you see what they charge for those pieces from Zac...! If Kitplanes had more articles like this then it would be a better magazine.... I hope Scott plans more articles like this in the future... maybe making the ribs from scratch, etc. Get some great ideas here for your sweetheart on Valentine's Day - and

Tim, Thanks, You've nailed precisely what I've been trying to confirm here and in the cooling sections of Alternative Engines Volumes I and it isn't without cost. The "scoop" I originally made for an air intake might just smooth out the rough connected end of the standard Zenith radiator installation. But it's still going to compress a lot of air that way creating drag, if it in fact does move air. As you point out, a smaller opening away from the turbulence is better, so I've begun another intake that is smaller, just off the belly that will hopefully improve cooling more. I've added pics mid way down the Subaru engine page if you're interested in the evolution of this effort for the aft belly mounted radiator. Trying to get these last things completed so it can be flown this spring. Really appreciate the input from everyone on this cooling thing. Larry McFarland - 601HDS at www.macsmachine.com

Subject: 601 Aileron Trim & Deflection
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bob Miller" <drmiller@cvillepsychology.net> Bryan, Many thanks. The point about back up control in case of cable or linkage malfunction is enough to convince me. Guess I'm going to do have to do what Jeff Small has been saying all along: "just put in the electric trim, dammit!". People who have the hinged ailerons really like them, especially those who switched over to hinged after flying hingeless. Got any tips on how to seal those aileron gaps? I'm thinking of just a piece of aluminum the length of the aileron and wide enough to cover the gap from underneath and not get caught in it at maximum upward deflection of the aileron. Probably put this gap cover on lightly springed hinges to minimize resistance, with teflon tape where it meets the aileron and maybe a slight curve on the trailing edge to prevent hanging up on rivets. Do you think .025 would be thick enough to keep air pressure from deforming it up into the gap? I really appreciate your answers. Even lowly duct tape works wonderfull. Nothing at all is not bad as the piano hinge is a pretty good seal. Keep it simple. Probably should be info about vacuum drive. I just looked at the Australian site. Go to 'jabiru.net.au' Scroll down thru the engine section. It mentions the vacuum drive that is available. Takes Rapco style pumps - CW rotation. Don't know if anyone has adapted one of Electrocuted Bob's B&C alternators but in a message from Andy S. a while back he mentioned that Jabiru is working on 'stacking' another 20 amp alternator on the 5100 for the anticipated electrical demands that that engine might find. Mentioned was the fact that it would be available (possibly) for the 3300. You could have a vacuum pump and doubled alternator output. Still in the development stages one would guess.

Maybe just some flexible tape on the underside of the hinge. If that area is sealed the air will flow smoothly along the underside because it can't flow upward.
