Go to Larry McFarland's site http://www.macsmachine.com/ find the tools in

The weather was perfect, friends and family all came out, the plane
performed beautifully... 17 must be my lucky number

Congratulations Rick,
You've got a really nice looking bird there. It's got to be
very gratifying to have experienced the build process and then finally fly.
Looking forward to flying this spring or summer.
Fly safe,

Subject: | How I used RV6 manual trim in N601RT |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: royt.or@netzero.com
Hi,
I installed an RV6 manual aileron trim in my CH601HDS. This is a spring system
which acts on the stick. I'll try to describe how it works:
The original design has a lever which is between the pilot and passenger seats.
The lever is welded on top of a steel tube so the lever is perpendicular to the
tube. The tube is mounted in a piece of plastic so it can pivot - similar to
the throttle bell crank which mounts parallel to the firewall in the CH601.
A second tube with another lever arm welded to the end fits inside the first tube.
When assembled, the lever arms are parallel to each other, pointing opposite
directions. The second lever, has a spring under tension, which goes to the
base of each stick. To adjust the aileron trim, the lever between the seats
is moved toward the light wing, the corresponding lever at the other end of the
assembly moves to reduce the spring tension at one stick and increases the spring
tension at the other stick.
I installed the tube with tube going through the main spar midway between the lightening
holes under the pilot seat. The adjusting lever/handle is about 1/2
inch in front of the spar, pointing upward. The lever at the other end of the
tube assembly is on the back side of the spar and pointing downward. I have a
spring between the end of the lever pointing down and the bottom of the standard
center Y control arm. I have a second spring between the bottom of the Y control
arm and a bolt in the main spar midway between the lightening holes under
the passenger seat. Both springs are under tension. The spring does not go the
complete distance between the stick and the adjuster or the mounting bolt.
Safety wire is used to complete the connection and adjust the tension of the spring.
To use adjust the trim, the lever is pointed toward the light wing, the spring
tension adds a small amount of preload on the stick and the neutral position is
changed.
A couple of additional notes. The springs supplied in the kit from Van's are not
as strong as I need. I have not changed the springs to get as much trim authority
as I desire. The trim lever in my plane is in the perfect position to snag
a pant leg when stepping into the plane.
See http://www.vansaircraft.com/cgi-bin/catalog.cgi?ident=1077121447-272-3&browse=airframe&product=ail-tx for Van's generic description, part number AIL-T6. The picture at this page is the RV4 trim and is nothing like the RV6 system.
Regards,
Roy

The heart rate is OK, I'm having trouble wiping the smile off my face
though :)
I bought a partially built wing kit and scratch built most everything
else. The nose cowl, motor mount, and dorsal fairing came from ZAC, the
bubble for the canopy from a fella down in Florida.
The only real "mod" was moving the instrument panel 2" forward for
easier step-in access. I sent sketches of the mod to Chris and he sent
them back with some notes and his approval of the changes.
I used the Jabiru 3300 engine. Sure is sweet! The temps were running on
the hot side, so I'll have to give my cooling baffels a little tweaking
before I can give a full report. Sure gets up and goes though :)
Indicated airspeed was 93 MPH @ 2340 RPM, 98 MPH @ 2470, 105 MPH @ 2550
RPM, and 110 MPH @ 2650 RPM. I'll try some throttle settings once I dial
in the cooling a little better.
Sure is a nice view from that bubble :)

Some of us might lead you on a bit and relate how we used 100 mph tape to
attach the rear strut. But that would be too simple. Truth is, we use JB Weld.
Actually, there is /are several pieces configured such that a "hard point "
is established. Thus the attach point for not only the strut, but bombs,
rockets, pitot tube for Mach meter, etc.
Feel taller? You will, after this bunch pulls your leg during your
construction phase.
Just be warned: They'll all want a ride in your completed plane.

Jack,
1) build a small rectangular box frame (like a picture frame), or simply
cut out a rectangular piece of 1x6 about 8" long.
2) Fasten two screws with washers to two corners sharing the same side
of the rectangle. Leave 1/4" or so of the screw out of the wood.
3) Fasten an appropriate spring to the center of the rectangle on the
opposite side of the rectangle to the two screws.
The cable you are testing runs over the two screws and is pulled back by
the spring.
4) Calibrate - fasten a test piece of cable to the ceiling of your
basement and apply various loads to it. For each load make a mark on the
board where the cable is deflected to. I used a water jug and a bathroom
scale to measure the weight.
You now have a calibrated scale for the price of a spring, 2 screws and
a board.

100 MPH tape on a 701! Shucks, a good wad of bubble gum should do it. Duct tape
would be overkill.

Fellow 701 builders:
I have put together a website www.CH701.com to provide a resource for 701
builders to research AND contribute (read: share) their building
experiences.
With the many fantastic builder websites out there today... it is time to
have an easy to use directory to list these in one place. In addition to
listing websites, it would be nice to collect photos, articles and other
builder resources to display.
Check it out... I am no web expert, but can keep it simple and hopefully
effective. Email address is on the site for you to contribute your website
address to the list, and any other photos, etc or suggesstions for its
improvment. Of, course this is not-for-profit so don't expect too much to
soon! But we can still have fun! I realize there will be plenty of
cross-over to 601 builder technology so this will have to be addressed, too.
For those of you who dont have websites, but have photos and other
contributions, send them in!
Thanks
