I decided as I was building to use the oil cooler to supply heat to the
cabin. I was not sure how it would work, but this is experimental right? I
have an early Jabiru 3300 S/N 16 and the oil cooler I got with the engine
is not what is provided now. It is 2" thick by 4" x 6". I fabricated a
housing to fit around the oil cooler and put a cable operated door at the
bottom to dump the heat into the cowling in the summer months. I ran two 2"
SCAT tubes from the oil cooler housing to the fire wall. I have the oil
cooler housing hanging from the left side of the engine mount, half way
between the engine and fire wall. There is a 4" SCAT tube that supplies
fresh air to the oil cooler, so no engine compartment air is passed into
the cabin.
I flown with OAT below 30 degrees, and the heat will just about drive you
out of the cockpit. At 40 degrees, I have to have the fresh air vents open
almost full to keep a comfortable balance. I flew a Commanche before
building my 610HDS, and we had to weld the muffler and heat exchanger at
every annual. I did not want to have to risk carbon monoxide on my 601. I
am very pleased with the oil cooler heater. I block off the SCAT tubes into
the cabin in the summer. I still need to fabricate a panel mounted shut off
for convenience, but have been having too much fun flying. Maybe this year???

Somebody posted a note, I believe to this list, that mentioned using some VW shock
mount parts (at $2.50 each) for their instrument panel. I can't find the
note in the archives, though. If anybody saved it, or can reference me to it,
can you please send me a note off-line? Thanks very much.

Hello, Bill
I read your post on the Z-list, and saw your listing on the Zenair builders database.
Beautiful bird, the "Casual Passion"!
I'm building an HD, from scratch, and would like to ask you a couple of questions:
1) Is your canopy hinged like the RVs', i.e., in the middle as opposed to the sides
(Heintz's
design)?
2) I intend to have my 601 unpainted, just polished. Thus, a metal cowling would
be desirable. Did
you make or buy the nose bowl (if so, what kind)?
Thanks in advance for your attention

Bill,
Probably VW or Audi fuel pump mounts. Used on almost all the watercooled
VWs. 6mm stud on each side of rubber isolator.

I don't think you will be happy with an oil cooler in the cockpit. Putting some
kind of split flow scheme in the oil system is technically complex and something
else to go wrong. Its one thing to run a capillary tube to an oil pressure
gage and having full flow of oil in the cockpit. You might be able to fold a
capillary tube back on itself to stop an oil leak and a totally differient emergency
blocking a 1/2 in. oil pipe. Parts to split water flow are readily available
and well proven on cars. Try using the oil cooler exhaust air to warm the
cockpit.
I have my exhaust muff intake behind the oil cooler on my Rotax 912 and on a cold
day I can fry my legs with it full open.

Subject: | Re aileron Gap Seals |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Norm Turner" <normsflighttraining@bigpond.com>
Hi to all on the list, Have been reading with interest over the last few weeks
on the subject of aileron gap seals. This is how It all started for me ! . About
6months ago I sent an email to ZAC on this subject and got there response which
has been covered very well in answers to questions on the list, MAKE DAM
SURE you leave enough length on full aileron deflection so that it will not jam
your ailerons!!!!. I have a 601 HDS and during my last flight of 4250nm round
trip mostly in rain storms that the water flow over the wings would stop @ the
aileron hinges and go down through them . This made me think of what lift I
was loosing on the HDS wing, and also posed the question of WHY the negative
pressure under the wing / ailerons? It should be positive if the critical Aof Attack
is not exceeded . Not being an aircraft engineer, one must think it out
in layman's terms. Look @ the gap between aileron and trailing edge of the wing
and just think about what the airflow is going to do in flight. Seems to me
that there is a vortex being produced @ that gap , changing the airflow and sucking
the air through the hinges. For the people who have hingless ailerons all
you have to think about is the DRAG produced,IF any, but like me I have to think
about the drag and the loss of lift. I will be doing some experiments soon
on this by first using tape under the hinges and then the gap seal. Which some
on the list have mentioned / RE the extension of the bottom skin / or de riveting
and installing a piece of aluminium with a rub contact on the aileron to
save the paint work , BUT this piece MUST BE LONG ENOUGH so not to catch and
spoil your day. Cheers and safe flying Norm Turner, 601 HDS Rotax 912 / 295Hrs.

Subject: | Safety wiring AN165 turnbuckle end |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com>
Hi Group,
I'm trying to figure out the right way to safety wire
a turnbuckle with an AN165 "pin" end. For cable end,
it's simple (well, at least, documented), you run the
safety wire through the hole. And for a "fork" end,
you run the wire in the slot. But what do we do for
the pin (or bolt) end?
Michel

Pin ends are usually bolted or pinned to a device that cannot rotate around
the axis of the turnbuckle. Then you would only have to safety one end. To
what are you attaching the pin end? If the pinned end is possible to rotate,
then you should use a clip locking turnbuckle. I have seen a pin end fitted
to a chain. Then the safety wire is run thru the chain link.
