Hi All,
Congrats to SoCal local Mr. Pitcher on his recent first flight!
I have been lurkinng the list for a few months now, and have decided to jump
in and join the fun. I will be butchering some sheet metal to build a CH-640
from plans and like Mr Pitcher, I will probably buy a few of the more
difficult/tooling intensive parts from ZAC. (Wing spars, perhaps welded
components, etc.)
Are there any other 640 builders in full swing yet? I have ferretted out a
few web pages, but none have been updated much beyond the plans purchase
phase. I know you are all just dying for me to start in on the myriad 'asked
and answered' questions I'll have, I apologize in advance for them.
First among them though, so that I might start getting it all together,...
Is there a recommended supplier for the tooling? Clecos, Cleco pliers, sheet
metal snips, etc? Perhaps a GOOD kitted deal?
Second, how is ZAC at providing the odd part for us scratchbuilders? I will
obviously be purchasing the plans, and most likely the wing spars if I can
get them separately. Do they charge decent prices for individual pieces such
as that or would one have to purchase the entire kit that those pieces come
in.
Third, Many of these questions probably could have been answered today had
ZAC answered the phone, but between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. there was no
answer and no machine left in charge at the factory.. How are they in
general with customer service, especially regarding the above asked parts
issue?
Thanks in advance, and thanks for all the helpful posts I've read so far,
you've got a good group of people here!

I have a leak on one main wheel brake slave cylinder on our 601HDS and need
to either replace the seals or get a new cylinder. Does anybody know the
manufacturer and part number for the slave cylinder assembly? As we did not
build her ourselves, we constantly run into this problem of no construction
documentation or any idea where to get replacement parts from.
Any help appreciated

I laid mine out on the inside of the RR#1 per the suggestion in the builders
guide. I riveted all of my stiffeners on all ribs from the "outside"
(opposite side of the flange?) of the rib. I guess maybe a better way to
explain it is all of my rivet heads (for the rib stiffeners) are on the
inboard side of the rib (when it is installed on the spar).
After looking at it maybe that's not a better way to explain it!! :-)

Greetings listers
Concerning wing construction on the 601 XL;
The photo guides on laying out the "L" stiffeners in regards to RR1 offers a
"suggestion" for riveting the L angle on the inside of the flange to avoid
interference with the fuselage skin, but the prints say to lay them out on
the
out side and trim them to 15 MM. to clear the fuselage skin. What is
everyone's
2 cents on this one? My opinion is to layout and rivet them on the inside of
the rib, that way no trimming or distortion of the stiffener occurs. The
construction manual says the prints always supercede the photo guide but?
And which
side should the rivet head be on if I choose to place them on the inside of
the rib?

Answer: Good prices for clecos, pliers are had from AirParts Kansas. Sheet
metal Weiss brand left, rights and straight snips are available at Lowe's.
Second, how is ZAC at providing the odd part for us scratchbuilders?
Do they charge decent prices for individual pieces such

Answer: Zac has always sent me the singular part at the same price that the
kit-builder would pay.
If you're a scratch builder, these will be few, but things like wheels,
brakes, canopy, etc.
Answer: Zac is also has been extremely good at taking care of questions,
parts, service and conducts business with the same amount of patience for
the scratch builder as the kit builder.
In addition, there are scratch-builders on the net who have sites that
illustrate process and methods
that are sometimes difficult to manage without a little help. Tho I'm a
601HDS scratch builder, the
problems are much the same and you're welcome to visit.
Good luck James,

If the wheels and brakes are originally from ZAC they will be MATCO

Hi Listers:
Well, after a couple years of lurking on this list and the RV list - and a
false start on an RV6 - I have finally decided to build a 601XL.
I recently received the plans and riveter (thanks, Joe). I plan on scratch
building while purchasing some of the more complex parts from Zenith.
I would love to hear from any builders in the Chicago area, especially if
you wouldn't mind a visit or two to see your project.

Steve,
That's awesome, the second wing will go much faster. I'm ready to
start on the fusilage, I'll be picking it up the 8th, with the control kit.
The weather is finally starting to break here, I'm looking forward to
flying home on weekends more often (in the 172). Did I mention that I
picked up a used 0-235. It has 1666 hrs on it and one bad cylinder. I
plan to rebuild it myself (with my A&P checking my work) when the weather
warms up. Keep up the good work!

Hi List,
Has anyone looked at the tow dolly type
car hauler design for moving their aircraft?
With an extended tongue and center ramp on it,
they look like the lightest thing you could build or modify.
CG could easily be a few inches forward of the axle.
The 601HDS has a 45"long x 74" spread that
would allow a Class I hitch and 1200 lb.GVW for
my 4-door Saturn or equal. The only thing beyond
would be a folding tail outrigger to carry lights back
to the tail and keep someone from running under the
rudder. Any history or thoughts?

If you've searched for CH640 pages I'll assume you've found
www.matthewmucker.com by now. (big ego grin)
I recently got married so the plane project is on hold while the new wife
moves her stuff in (and much of my stuff out).
I'm not far enough into the project to answer many of your questions. Buy
your tools wherever you can find 'em cheap. (Depending on the tool of
course. Many jobs can be done with cheap junk. Other tools you'll want to
pay real money for, but so far I'm getting by with cheap junk. Can you say
"Harbor Freight?")
You can buy just the wing spars (or any other part) individualy from Zenith,
but be prepared for sticker shock.

Thank you Cy!
I hoped to find you at your hangar today and consider
how it might be configured. Didn't realize you had 84" deck width.
Let me know when you're gonna be there and I'll take a closer look at
it. Also, at your convenience, I'd appreciate you're critical eye and

support a better insurance rate and the FAA airworthiness inspect that
follows.
Thanks again,

There's about 18mm of play in the flaps on my XL (in other words, if you
manually grab the aft end of the flap and try to move it, it will move up
about 18mm). Is this about the same as other XL's out there, or is it too
much play? I know you can move the Cessnas' flaps by hand about the same
amount, but this plane is much lighter so I'm concerned about flutter
problems while in flight.
Also, how has everyone been installing their hinge pins, so that you can
remove them later if necessary? I'm aware of the methods used to stop the
pin from working its way out of the hinge, but unless you leave the pin
longer than needed (without bending the end), how would you get it out
again if need be?
Thanks,

A hex wrench inserted into the end of the hinge works fine for pushing the

I'd be glad to do the inspection at your convenience. One of the benefits
as you are well aware of being retired. I
have been going to my hangar around noon as Nick and I go over to the lucky
8 for lunch most every day. But tomorrow can work as well. I'll need to get
my mirrors and inspection lights as it as intense as an annual.
We still will need to inspect it after the final assembly at the airport.

For all of you building in Ontario:
I'm getting a little bit confused about the required inspection process
here - who to contact and what inspections are required. Is it mandatory
to use www.md-ra.com services? Thanks.

Yes, I am just about finished with my project, you can view my site at

Good luck with your CH-640, she is a nice solid aircraft!

Yup, I'm sure. There's quite a bit of play, which is why I'm concerned.
Problem is, there's no way to get to the spot where the control rod mates
into the inner part of the flap (without taking the flaps off entirely,
which is not easy to do). Just wondering if others ended up with the same
situation, and if so what they did about it if anything.

Jack...
I'm just about to get started on a 601 XL myself. I'm here in the heart of Chicago.
I live in a townhouse...32nd Street near the lake...about one mile south
of Meigs Field (may it rest in peace).
What caused you to back off the RV-6 and head toward the Zodiac XL?
I've been debating with myself between the RV-9A & the XL for a couple of years
now. The RV-9A would be so much more useful as a travelling machine, due to
its speed. I am leaning toward the XL just because I believe I can build it in
a smaller space and I think my neighbors would be unhappy with all the rivet-noise
of building an RV. I'm hoping to get started in a month or two. I'll
be building from a kit, and I hope to get it done in less than two years. By
the time I am ready for final assembly I'll probably move somewhere with more
room on the far south fringes of Chicagoland.
Where abouts in Chicago are you located?

Hi Jarek;
The short answer is YES if you are building it as a homebuilt. Notify them of your
intent to build it and you will have 2 inspections on route to getting flight
authority.

Subject: | Help needed with nose gear steering rods |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff Paden" <jeffpaden@madbbs.com>
Can anyone assist me on the subject of nose gear steering rods?
Today I connected my rudder cables and nose gear steering rods and then
lifted the nose gear off the ground to test my controls. I was VERY upset
to find out that it was VERY hard to move my rudder. This is because of the
design of the CH-640 nose gear. It sits in a V and is held down by the
bungee. Since the steering rods are solid rods the nose gear has to move to
move the rudder. It would be very difficult to use the rudder during flight
and I MUST find a way to change this.
I am looking for any source to purchase what I would call normal nose gear
steering rods, you know, the ones that have a spring in them so that in
flight the nose gear can stay forward and when the rudder is being used.
Then on the ground the weight of the engine will take the load off the V
that the strut sits in and the rods should then push the nose gear for
steering.
If anyone knows where I can purchase these steering rods PLEASE let me know.
Thank you
Jeff Paden

Hi Jeff. The 801 is the same design. All you need to do is make a seat for
the front gear out of flat stock and do not machine the V groove in it. That
will take all the centering effect out of it. The real problem with the 801 is..
One adjusts the tension of the rudder cables with the nose gear in the full up
position. Now that my engine is in place the nose gear is slightly off its
seat, maybe 3/32" or so. My rudder cables now have a TON of slack in them. I am
concerned that with a firm landing I will loose directional control cause the
rudder will not be effective at all. I would call Nick but the answer will be
" just fly it". The geometry of this steering set up must be flawed. The more
the front gear compresses the more slack you get. I am thinking of adding some
bungees in the tail to keep most of the slack out of the cables. Have any of
you 601 /701 builders run into this same problem?? If so how did ya deal with
it. There are a few pics of my plane on Jons web site www.CH701.com. I
have to warn ya, if you don't think a V-8 all aluminum Ford belongs in a plane
ya
better not look at pics 2 & 3..
