There is another Tygon-like tube which is made specifically for gasoline ans is
not affected by alcohol or other additives used in auto-gas, although not the
Tygon brand. It's the pale blue (almost clear) hose from Bing. It's used on
many ultralight engine installations and is available from Aircraft Spruce and
several other sources. The Bing tubing doesn't seem to deteriorate after years
of exposure to mo-gas and/or sunlight. You can even see a float ball thru it -
makes a sight gauge even better. Good stuff.

I'm building a 601XL From kit and have been purchasing the sub
assemblies for the same reason you are considering it. The only place it
really costs that much more is the freight.
I started by building the Rudder are the factory workshop in October of
2002 and finished the second wing this weekend. The Fuselage is on the
truck somewhere between Mexico MO and here as I write.

I don't think the noise from the strobe unit will be
perceptible! (mine is behind the passenger seat).

I used the blue Bing on my gyro sight glass and it hardened and turned a
little yellow in about a year. It was still functional, but I didn't like
it. For any application other that sight glass I recommend and use a high
pressure fuel line, made for injector systems, from NAPA. It has a covering
and cost about $3 a foot. I used 5/16, I guess they have it in other sizes.
That what they use on almost all fuel injected auto engines and they never
seem to go bad.

I had them behind the seats in my gyro and they interfered with the intercom
and radio. I ended up putting two inline 20 amp filters, one to the radio
and one to the intercom. I would guess the wing location would be best
because of the interference they could create.

I went the junk yard route. Got a Nippon Denso from a 75-79 Honda civic.
Same one is on a newer Sprint, Spectrum, or Suzuki Samurai. I replaced the
pulley with a larger one from a pollution air pump. It fits right on w/o
mod. About a $40 outlay.

I have had mine working on the workbench right next to the AM radio and the
FM radio and they did nothing to the radio. I did install Sheilded wires in

I have tested the strobes and they do make a high pitched whine when operating
but I don't think they're loud enough to be heard over the other sounds that will
be present in flight. The units are under the seats and with the seat cushions
and other insulation around that area, not much sound will get out anyway.
As far as induced noise in the audio circuits, that remains to be seen. It should
be easy to add additional shielding if necessary.

They say a pitcher's worth a thousand words, so here's a picture of the
numbers I'm getting with the ZodiacHD/Jabiru3300 at 10 hours into the
flight test time :

The EIS readout is
(top row) 2960 RPM, 9.9 total hours, cyl #5 is hottest at 341 degrees
(bottom row) Oil =232 degrees/61 PSI, volts= 14.4, highest EGT=1331
These numbers were taken after leveling off from a full throttle
climbout.
The RPM's are still a little lower than I expected, but they're still
coming up. The CHT's are a little higher than I want to see, but they're
well within limits after a little baffle work during the 5 hour
retorque/valve adjustment. EGT's run 1200 to 1400 most of the time, but
peak out around 1475 during full throttle climbout.
Indicated airspeed is just under 130 MPH at 2960 RPM. I'm hoping for
higher RPM's as the engine breaks in. The GPS in the pic shows a
groundspeed of 143 MPH with the 15 MPH tailwind this morning. I think
I'll actually be able to GO somewhere in this plane! :)
The left wing is a little "heavy", needing full right aileron trim for
hands-off flight unless there's a couple hundred pounds of ballast in
the right seat. With the right seat ballast in place, it's not so bad,
but still needs some right trim to fly hands-off.
So I'd like to hear comments.
Are other Jabiru owners seeing similar numbers? Any hints or
suggestions?
How about Zodiac HD flyers, comments? Problems to watch out for?

It's an HD. No fairings yet, but I'll probably add some wheel pants and fair
in some of the draggy stuff like the entry steps and bungee-box on the main
gears. The Zenith website http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/601-hd.html shows a
top speed of 135 MPH for a 570 pound HD with the 80 horse Rotax. Mine has
considerably more power with the 120 horse Jabiru, but she's considerably
heavier too at 686 pounds empty weight.
No complaints about the speed, but I'd sure like to get some more RPM's from
the Jabiru. It's already improved by a couple hundred RPM's since the first
flight, maybe she'll go up a little more as it breaks in.
