It's an HD. No fairings yet, but I'll probably add some wheel pants and fair
in some of the draggy stuff like the entry steps and bungee-box on the main
gears. The Zenith website http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/601-hd.html shows a
top speed of 135 MPH for a 570 pound HD with the 80 horse Rotax. Mine has
considerably more power with the 120 horse Jabiru, but she's considerably
heavier too at 686 pounds empty weight.
No complaints about the speed, but I'd sure like to get some more RPM's from
the Jabiru. It's already improved by a couple hundred RPM's since the first
flight, maybe she'll go up a little more as it breaks in.
Happy Zodiac driver,
Rick P.

Holy Moly, to my knowledge nobody's gotten those figures in real life.
Outstanding, Rick! Even with the 3300, those figures are terrific. Have
you done anything you can think of that would improve the performance?
Congratulations,
Bob

I'm having a hard time buying this....Sure there maybe minor differences
between individual zodiacs but that kind of difference is huge. Its got 10
miles and hour on my HDS.
Have you done a three way run and calibrated with you GPS or is this from
the ASI? Where is the static port for the ASI if this is the case.
Zenith use the static port inside the cabin on their demonstrators, which
runs at lower pressure than ambient and artificially raises the indicated
speed.
I'm just glad my Wife hasn't fallen in love with the new 640 (its got four
seats and we can take our friends and look how fast it goes)...yeah right...

Hello list members.
I am facing a dilemma up here regarding shipping my Rotax engine from NC to
NY. I know this is not directly Zenith related, but it is the engine for my
Zenith 701, so I thought someone could reccomend a shipping company or a
method to move the engine from North Carolina to the Freight Airline in New
York.
I really appreciate any help with this matter.
Best regards,

Rather than repeat the story, go to
http://www.geocities.com/r5t0ut21/shipping.html and read the story about how
I shipped my Corvair engine from New Hampshire to Texas. These guys saved me
a lot of money over what it would have cost if I just tried to do it myself.

Lots of folks will tell you lots of things but know that battery cable is
heavy so the smallest you can get away with is good.
The cable does not have to be sheilded and I did not run a ground wire, but
grounded it to the airframe itself. Make sure there is a ground strap from
the engine near the starter to the firewall, lest you want 300amps going
through your main bearings...Believe me you do not!
I used a #6 gauge and my (main) battery is behind the pilots seat and is an
18Ah sealed lead acid.
My second (tiny 3 ah) battery is mounted on the firewall but is only running
the second ignition and one fuel pump.
Has Ron got your engine yet?

Andrew,
I used a #4 Ga welding wire. Very flexible
and easy to solder ends onto. Rubber jacket
on it is also rugged.
My solenoids are each mounted on the 2-battery tray at rear spar
and the heavy wire goes forward to the starter from there.

I also will have the battery behind the seats and a Subaru in the cowl. I ran a
#4AWG tefzel (aircraft grade) wire from the battery tray to the engine compartment.
Tefzel won't produce toxic fumes if the wire shorts out. In the engine
compartment, I used some THHN wire I had laying around, this isn't very flexible
but it doesn't need to be. I will probably use a more flexible wire where it
connects to the battery though. I used #6 to tie in the alternator to my electrical
system and also the main fuse panel.

I'm using a Sensenich wood prop, 64x49. I was concerned that it might be too
much prop for the engine at first since I only got ~2600 RPM at WOT during the
first couple of static runs, and about 2700 RPM at WOT in level flight. I'm
just now starting to see the 2900's after 10 hours. I was hoping for WOT RPM's
in the 3100 to 3200 RPM range. Maybe once I get 50 or 60 hours on her it'll go
up a couple hundred RPM.
No exact numbers to give you on fuel burn yet, but it's been running close to
5 GPH. I've been varying the throttle settings too much during the first 10
hours to really get any meaningful numbers.
That XL should really haul butt with all that horsepower and it's skinnier
wing!

I pretty much just followed the blueprints. No fairings or anything yet, but
they'll be coming soon. It'd be nice to get the full 135 MPH max speed like the
website shows :)
I *did* follow 2 rules when building:
1) every small change will add 100 hours to your build time.
2) anything that you want to add to the airplane should be tossed into the air
first. If it falls back down to the earth on it's own, don't use it. It's too heavy
to put in your airplane.

I had trouble believing the ASI at first myself. I knew she FELT fast, but I'm
usually
skeptical of the advertised numbers on company websites. The next day I put the
GPS on the
panel and went flying again. It was a dead calm morning and I made a couple different
runs
going both ways with the same results: at ~2500 RPM I was indicating 110 MPH and
the GPS
showed 110 MPH. Lemme see if I can find the pics... ah, here's one:

I built the pitot mast shown in the Bingelli book with the "piccilo tube" static
port just
above the pitot tube. It's mounted under the left wing just outboard of the leading
edge
tanks.

Yeah, that's the "easy way", but it does put the staic source in a bit of a low-pressure
area.
Frank, how much does your HDS weigh, and what engine are you using?
I'm thinking about building a set of HDS wing panels later on. This project is
just about
done and I still want to BUILD something :)
