If you return the fuel to the feed line, you'll increase vapor-lock
problems. The fuel will be heated during its trip in the engine compartment,
while if it is returned to the tanks it has time to cool.
Am going to run a return line on a carb engine because high OAT (am living
in Africa), and auto gas = vapor lock. I choked as well on Andair's prices,
but after considering all other available solutions, I've decided to go for
it: only one selector to worry with, reduced risks of "oops... switched to
the wrong tank..." comments when you suddenly realize that you are leaving a
contrail of fuel overflowing from the vent. All the complications and
possible mistakes associated with more selectors are not worth saving a
couple of hundred bucks, in my opinion...

Have you got a diagram or drawing about the "T"? You only have one return
line, but two feed lines to the selector. Or are you talking about making a
loop to the engine side (output side) of the fuel selector?

My 2 cents: An Archive search today brought up 105 messages about this
subject with answers all over the water front.
Several replies from posters, I deeply respect, suggested ATF Dexron
III. Their experience was 5 - 6 years with no problems. (Names omitted
because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings).
Why ATF? It's cheap, readily available, red (you can see it), won't eat
your paint and works.
One poster said not to use ATF because it was not readily available at
airports you may stop at. Well, I plan on carrying a Qt. with me along
with some engine oil. I have a Rotax 912 and am using Castrol Superbike
oil - not readily available at airports either.
I have had ATF in my brakes for 9 months now - no problems. Not flying,
as my wings are not yet attached. However, taxi tests last month to
check brakes and just for fun, showed the brakes working fine.

Just a suggestion, get a motorcycle oil cooler. It just a 1/2 in. copper U
shaped tube with fins and return the fuel back to the engine. This will cool
the gas and simplify the plumbing. Has anyone tried something like this?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Leo (and others),
The ATF will work just fine. I've been using it for almost 2 years now and
have 225+ landings (many with heavy braking) and haven't had any problems or
leaks.

Vic After checking with my next door neighbor who is an IA and looking it up in
the catalog, found that 235thru 0-360 are the same ring, I will build your
mount for $275 plus shipping. If you wish me to do it send $50 which is non refundable,
when I finish the mount I'll send it to you and if you like it you
can send the balance. Just started a Legal Eagle fuselage so it might be 4-6
weeks delivery. Thanks for your interest. John

Subject: | Re: 6-port fuel selector valve |

One alternative to a 6-port valve is to pipe the return fuel to a T on the inlet
side of the pump. One disadvantage of this method is that the fuel gets heated
on its trip through the fuel pump to the engine and back so you'll pe piping
heated fuel to the inlet to your pump which may lead to vapor lock problems.
Running the return fuel through a small oil cooler might eliminate this risk
as someone has suggested.
Another possibility is to use two 3-port valves, one for supply and one for return
and rember to switch them at the same time. You could tie them together with
a linkage so both switch together if you want to eliminate the risk of forgetting.
Or you could find a fuel valve for an older model Ford pickup with dual tanks and fuel injection. I see a few of these up for bid on E-bay (www.ebaymotors.com).

Subject: | Request: Information for Kitplanes Article (Interiors/Exteriors) |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Cory Emberson" <bootless@earthlink.net>
Hello Zenith builders and pilots!
First, thank you for your wonderful response to my request for examples of terrific
panels - I expect that a Zenith will be included in the June 2004 issue.
I am writing another article for Kitplanes magazine that will feature builders
who have distinctive interiors and/or exteriors.
My deadline is rather short, so if you could email me as soon as possible, hopefully
by Tuesday, that will give me enough time to put it together.
Here are some of the criteria I'm looking for:
Interiors that are (one or any combination):
1. creative
2. inexpensive
3. very comfortable
4. lightweight
5. generally cool and different
6. distinctive in some way.
Exteriors that are:
1.. stunningly attractive
2.. original design
3.. historically accurate
4.. distinctive in some way
Other things to keep in mind:
1. How you came to design your interior/exterior (How you got your idea)
2. The reasons why you did it as you did
3. What benefits you had in mind
4. Any unexpected benefits (and/or pitfalls) there were
5. What you learned
6. How many hours you've flown with it (if completed)
7. How much of the work did you do yourself?
8. Did you have any professional assistance? How much?
9. The equipment and tools you used
10. How much time it took to build and install
11. The cost of building it.
12. Would you do it again the same way? Why?
Here are the photo requirements for Kitplanes: Photos must be 300 dpi at a size
large enough to use in the magazine, which is usually at least 3 x 3 inches.
If an image is 300 dpi at 1 x 1 inch, it won't be big enough to do any good. Hard
copy photos are good, too.
Thanks so much - I really appreciate your help!
best regards,
Cory Emberson

Thanks guys. I did see that in their web site and filled my system from the
bottom up. Works great thr first time. I did use good silicone fluid. probably
should have used Google first...

I asked my Subaru expert about the "T" arrangement. He said it is not a
good idea, for the same reasons already mentioned. He also said that a six
port selector was available from J.C. Whitney for $54.00 that worked well.
It's used on pickups and Rvs with aux tanks. I've had two trucks with dual
tanks with those type of selectors and never had a problem. I had one of
them for 15 years.

Hi group,
My name is Tommy Clark, I've just started a 601XL. While working the elevator,
I was trying to "tweak" the flange on the elevator skin with a smooth pair of
pliers, and pulled a hole in the skin, approximately 1/8-3/16 "L" shaped tear
in the flange, near the bend. What should I do? Is my skin trashed or is it
an issue? I would appreciate any input from you guys that has been there.
Thanks for your input,

Does anyone here have any idea of where I an find information on the torque
that I should use for the bolts that hold the engine to the dynafocal engine
mount? I don't want to crush my rubber mounts, but I want to make sure that
my engine is firmly bolted to the aircraft.
The engine is a Lycoming IO-540, the mounts are Barry mounts and the bolts
are AN8 bolts.
Any help will be appreciated.
