I agree with Bryan -- I had to do the same thing. I used a bench vise and
gradually modified the bend to fit.

Ray -
This sounds like what happened to me, and I'll sheepishly describe the resolution...
I successfully but with great difficulty re-formed my left bottom longeron to match
the curve in the bottom skin, with the excess material extending past the
front. An e-mail to Nick after that frustrating effort, and he responded very
politely that the excess material is cut from the rear...and he didn't say what
he must have been thinking about my intelligence. And I'll be damned if the
right longeron didn't fit perfectly if fitted flush with the front of the skin.
He said the photos and descriptions weren't clear, and has added a note to the
12/10/03 photo instructions revision.
Bottom line: almost always, the parts fit. Just back up to the wider view if you
have trouble.

Subject: | Lewis and Clark Trail Flight |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Stanley Challgren <challgren@mac.com>
Listers:
I am planning a flight to follow the Lewis and Clark Trail from its
beginning near St. Louis to its terminus on the Pacific coast. The
flight will be in two stages; the first to coincide with their St.
Louis departure on 14 May and ending in Mandan, ND where they camped
the first winter. The second stage will be from Mandan to the Pacific
coast and that is planned for next year. I anticipate 2-3 flights per
day of about two hours each. I expect about 6-8 days for the 1600 mile
trip which will include visits to some of the Lewis and Clark memorial
sites along the way.
If anyone needs information on what is planned I would suggest Lewis &
Clark by Air written by Bob and Mike Webster. They flew an Aircam,
which has a 60-80 mph cruise speed, at low altitude along the Lewis and
Clark trail. Their flight took 70 hours in the air with one brother
flying while the other took pictures. Their photos in the book and
the accompanying CD capture the beauty of the Lewis and Clark Trail.
More info on their book may be found at www.LewisAndClarkByAir.com
where it can be purchased for $35. Undaunted Courage, Stephen
Ambrose's book on Lewis and Clark, as well as Julie Fanselow's book,
Traveling the Lewis and =C7lark Trail, may also be consulted.
I plan to take a lot of pictures along the way so will need a copilot,
photographer, or both to accompany me. Anyone building a 601 and
planning on using the Jabiru 3300 would benefit greatly. More than one
person could fill the role if a relief along the route can be effected.
Anyone interested in accompanying me in my aircraft or in their own may
contact me at my email address: >challgren@mac.com<

Hello All,
What are the specs for the anti-collision light in the US/Canada
(assuming that they are the same).
What I have so far is ...
RED, WHITE, or RED/WHITE
30 degrees above and below horizontal
360 degrees around
Does anyone know what intensity is required?
Thanks

No but check this out. LED lights combined with a great deal on a strobe
package...Very, very cool!
Very reasonable cost, especially as the aeroflash stuff that ZAC has ben
pedling has shown to be less than reliable...Not a big deal to replace
capacitors providing you do it yourself, very bloody expensive if you send
the power supplies back for "service".
This is what I'm going for on my RV project. You will have to fashion some
kind of housing...Think of this, the first time your light lens rolls off
your wing and smashes, you'll wish you had done this...I know I did...:)

How would one install lighting in a wing that is already closed up? Someone
once told me that the wires would have to be inserted into a plastic tube
and run through the lightening holes in the ribs.
Is there any better way without drilling out the rivets?

You can cut a step in the end of a piece of 2 by 4 and hammer the Z angle into
the step with a soft-faced hammer or just overhang the Z angle off the end of
a board and hammer it into shape. It's not too critical.

Hi, Dan
It would seem the unit you refer to was designed for ultralights.
The ones used in GA are more powerful (20 - 40 joules compared to 8).
There is a lengthy discussion on strobes in the RV list, and probably on this list
as well. You
might want to search the archives.

Title 14: Aeronautics and Space
PART 23AIRWORTHINESS STANDARDS: NORMAL, UTILITY, ACROBATIC, AND COMMUTER CATEGORY

23.1401 Anticollision light system.

These are the current U. S. requirements. If your aircraft was certified at an
earlier date, the regulations in effect at that time will apply.
Get a copy of the Aircraft Spruce and Specialty catalog. Just before the section
of the catalog where strobe light systems are listed is a very good description
of the anti-collision light requirements including the requirements for aircraft
certified at various times in the past. I don't know if the Canadian regulations
are the same but, since the FAA has been adopting ICAO rules more and
more in recent years, it's likely the Canadian rules are similar.

These will take care of the position light requirement but you still have to have
anti-collision lights (strobes) in addition to these, either the Aeroflash
units or some other brand. LEDs are not bright enough to satisfy this requirement
as far as I know, they need to put out 10 times as much light in every direction.

One other thought having built my plane.....Get your wingtip lights and
landing lights (if wing mounted) early or at least know where your wires
need to run. I waited too long and had partially buttoned up wings waiting
for the strobe system so I knew where I could mount everything etc.

Not true, these are high output LEDs and never need changing. In fact they
are brighter than "normal" position lights.
Check the creative air link that does a complete landing, strobe and LED Nav
light kit. Pretty good for the price.
The issue with the Zod is you would need to fab a lense cover arrangement.

I installed mine after closing the wings. Basically you just cut a hole in
the end of the wing and route the wires through a PVC pipe. Then make an
inspection cover to cover up the hole.

Your first post referred to the Killacycle site which only lists nav light kits.
I didn't see the link to the creativair site which has the strobes. I meant
that LEDs aren't bright enough to replace strobe lights, they are plenty bright
enough to replace standard nav lights.
