Talking about dual sticks, will it make sense in a 701? did anyone try this before?
Thanks,
Dirk.

Mike and Tony,
I've just installed the dual stick option and my sticks clear the bottom of
the IP by about 15 - 20mm. My aileron torque tube may be a bit low because I
was working off the 12/01 version of the drawings and I know that there are
revised numbers on the newer ones. My numbers are 165mm for the front of the
torque tube and not 169 as one of the update indicates. Even so, that only
accounts for 4mm. If I have time I'll check for sure the distance from the
floor to the centre of the torque tube
For those of you contemplating the dual stick option and have not installed
the centre spar section, it is MUCH easier to be able to remove the centre
spar and work on it outside the plane. Just cleco it in place and don't
rivet until you absolutely have to.
I'd like to post some photos on the photo share but my 1 y.o daughter took a
liking to my digital camera which is now in the techospital recovering from
the encounter. Actually, the recovery process simply involves relocating the
damage from the camera to my wallet but that can be a story for another
campfire.

Are there going to be any 601xl's at Lock Haven? I am hoping to start a Corvair
powered XL next year and I was hoping to have my wife see one before I start.

I am in the process of designing dual sticks for the 701. I think it's
going to be relatively easy. Both gyros I built and flew had the dual
sticks. It's what I'm used to. Plus I want to use the center for a small
console to put my fuel selector and possibly fuel gauges. The co-pilot
stick will be removable. I will have to move the flap lever a little.
Although Zac seems to think the single stick is the greatest thing since
sliced bread, I disagree and thought it was awkward. I was in the
co-pilot's seat and had to constantly move my left leg when Roger was making
right turns. And when I flew, I had to do it with left hand and that was
even more awkward. There is very little I can do well with my left hand.
When I get it built I will post pictures. It shouldn't be but a few weeks.
I'm finishing the fuselage today and will start on controls next.

Hello, all
I am planning on installing dual sticks on my 601.
For those that have installed the ZAC version of dual sticks, have you found that
the parts ahead
of the spar are on your way when you enter the cockpit?
Are they in any way a nuisance?
Depending on your input, I might opt for John Tarabocchia's design (dual stick
components *behind*
the spar).

Larry, keep me updated! I am left handed again, so I'll have to fly from the right
seat, thats why I thought about dual controls.
Would be nicer to have it between your legs though.
Dirk.

I enquired about the Kuntzleman strobes from sky sports and this is their
reply.
Incidentally their price is some $40 or so cheaper than from Kuntzleman
directly, and about $100 cheaper than Aeroflash.

The Double Dual Magnum strobe driver has an output of 14 Joules, 2 higher
than the
certified Aero Flash.
2 coils of 25 foot each is supplied. It is not shielded, however
shielded wire is available for an additional $10 per system.
All of the Magnum drivers will fire any other manufacturer's strobe head,
so our drivers will work with an Aeroflash or Whelen strobe/nav light head.

Dirk,
I think that the Y stick is a great idea, for most of the pilots looks
strange, but here, even an owner of a Kitfox 6 liked the idea, less
complexity and easy to get in and out the plane, he wants a flight in
our plane, once is ready, just to give the Y a "flying" try.
A bet all of us thinked at least once in the dual sticks, but you
should first try the Y...

Not that I'm aware of - 601's are rather rare around the mid Atlantic states and
completed XL's are just coming into the flock. Might be attended by an HD and
five HDS models; your wife can look them over - and besides, HDS's are cuter.
Sentimental Journey 2004 runs from Wednesday, June 16th through Saturday the 19th.
Low key event; sit back under the trees and watch the spot landing and bomb
drop contests, buy food for half of what you'd expect at OSH, pull your a/c
out and go flying any time, plan sunset flights up the Susquehanna, etc. Mucho
fun. Of course it's always scheduled in the midst of Pennsylvania's thunderstorm
month. You can drive in but don't expect MapQuest to be able to get you
there in a straight line.
Mark, sure the Cherokee is welcome, it was probably produced here. Bring a tent
and you can camp under it. All a/c types are welcome and you'll find far more
vintage a/c than you might expect. One year there were eight rows of J-3s
totaling over seventy Cubs. Two rows of Stearmans is not unusual for a final
Saturday in good wx.
Camping with a/c is in the southeast corner of the field, GA parking south and
southwest near the Piper Museum; all overflow goes across to the ramp and grass
area north of 9/27 and bus service (or pickup truck, van, station wagon) brings
you over to the south side. If you park your a/c south of the runway be sure
you bring tiedowns.
Every year they highlight a different Piper model, this year it's the PA-20/22
types so shortwings should be in abundance. Think about joining us.
Gee, if we get six Zodie Rockets drivers together in one spot - think of the lies
we could tell...
regards jeff

Gary,
I agree that the centre stick is a great idea and I liked my flight in
N9601Z. There are only a couple of points that swayed my decision towards
dual sticks:
- On a go around you need to get the carb heat off, trickle up the flaps,
and retrim. If any of these controls are in the centre of the panel you have
to swap hands during a critical phase of flight. I felt that reaching across
to hold the stick with my left hand while manipulating switches on the panel
might not be a good idea. That said, I have a wiring diagram for dual flap
switches that you could install adjacent the T bar throttles.
- I want to install a single throttle control under the centre of the panel,
just above the fuel selector.
- I've been doing all my recent hours in a rented Diamond DA-20 and really
enjoy the control layout.
On the down side I think that I would appreciate the ability to lay charts
etc across my knees. I find that a problem in the Katana.
Hey, if I really don't like the dual sticks, I can always install the centre
stick.

Think I'll do that Gary, hate to change anything on a good design, those controls
are put that way for a reason, I'm sure, just curious.
Like I said, I'm left handed, but flying from the right seat should be ok, just
arange the panel a bit different.
Have you thought about a T throttle arangement? like the one in Piper? I just
dont like the push pull one.
How are you getting along with the building? does the 400 hr build time hold true?
I am looking into putting the BMW R 1150 in my 701, engine specs look good.
Dirk in Africa.
