Zenith-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Zenith-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Zenith-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Zenith-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Zenith-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.

What do you do to close the holes at the trailing edge, where the last

There appears to be a lot of people who want backups for the backups.
As for electrics, I am happy with one battery and the ability to shut down
all electric devices not needed to sustain flight. I have a portable com
with its own internal battery pack This is kept charged via the a/c
electrics so in the event of an alternator failure the com should be fully
charged. The one thing I am not happy with is single ignition. I hope to
remedy this even though in 40 yrs I have only had one ignition failure and
that was on the ground (my car is a different story). I have had an
overvoltage alternator failure but it was in my boat. The voltage went off
the scale and no way to shut it down. My a/c has an inline fuse to handle
this possibility The alt. field is switched as well. Life in general
contains risk and one must decide their own limits. If you want 2 or 3 or
more of each system that is entirely up to you. My opinion is that the more
systems you have the more likely one will fail.

I have purchased one, for my 912S, and currently have it 'running' on
my workbench, great instrument, a sum total of three connectors
(Wires) from the Engine compartment to the instrument, for all engine
management, including fuel flow, 4XEGT oil pressure, oil temp and
water temp...
Have 'played' with one in a trike, and a Tri-Pacer...

Hello 701'ers,
I pilot drilled and then drilled to size the 3/16" holes that connect
the strut angle on the wing spar to the strut attachment plate.
There is no way to get the 2D+.03 center-of-hole-to-edge clearance.
Is this right or did I miss something. Nothing in the plans or manual.
Oh yeah. The RV-1 was made out of a Stits Playboy, and Dan Denney
designed for Aviat, then went on his own with the Kitfox, sold it to Sky
Star, and now I think he makes Mustangs.

Hi Ron,
This radio is exhibiting all of the normal characteristics of Amplitude
Modulation. Weakening signals with distance being one of those attributes
(and the chief reason why FM is preferred over AM). Once component of AM
receivers that can lead to excessive attenuation is an automatic noise
limiter which is essentially a dynamic attenuator. If the ANL is set too
aggressively then that would result in excessive attenuation of the signals.
I disagree with the suggestion that the receiver needs to be matched to the
headphones. Receivers are designed to drive standard impedances. That
being said, an intercom output may be designed to drive a higher impedance
than a headphone output. If so, the intercom output may not be capable of
driving the headphone due to impedance mismatch and that may be an
additional source of the attenuation that you are experiencing.

An in line fuse will not handle an overvoltage condition. Fuses react to amps
over time i.e a slow blow fuse or instantaneously i.e. a standard fuse. A lot
of "Buss" style automotive glass tube fuses are rated to 250 volts. But if
you exceed their current carrying capacity at 12 volts blow they will.

Martin,
I measured my holes on this piece, they are approx 10mm from center to
edge.
A 3/16" hole is about 5mm diameter so 10mm is only 2X diameter.
But, we are dealing with .125 alum plate... Im not sure the rule of thumb
tolerance you mention for .016 sheet applies to this much thicker stock.
We could use more opinions on this... but I think for this application you
dont have much of a choice where those holes are placed if you follow the
plans (like we both did!)

I would suspect these devices will protect against a short term spike but if
the alternator voltage went to 150volts and stayed there I doubt these would
do much?
Any ideas

If you want overvoltage protection you can buy 800 watt transient
voltage suppressers from Digi-Key for $0.56 each.

Actually the idea is generally to have the over voltage protection device to
short during over voltage which trips alternator circuit breaker. Thus the
device only needs to dissipate enough power to trip breaker.

Tim,
Sounds like quite a savings, thanks for the tip. Would you wire one of
these in series between the main bus and the regulator just like a standard
OV protector? How would you wire it to protect from alternator failure not
related to regulator failure?

Oh, Well... enough superstition and witchcraft! AM RADIO is very easily
controlled in the loudness department by a 60+ year old feature called AVC.
The ANL is for the purpose of reducing noise spikes, and it floats along at
the average amplitude of the signal, chopping off any pulse such as ignition
noise spikes.
The best thing to do in my humble opinion is to compare your 760 with a
couple others. Above a certain level, the AVC works pretty well.
The rest of us use the SQUELCH to control the minimum signal strength we
want to hear.
For those who read my earlier post, this was response type 4.

Several owners have noted drumming in the fuselage and several have suggested remedies.
While looking at the Savannah site, I noticed that its fuselage has several longitudinal
creases, apparently to decrease drumming. Does it work and can it be
done to a 701?

Frank,
As I read the specs for the part if properly mounted it will dissipate
800 watts, since the Suburu alternator is 60 amps at 12 volts that is
720 watts, so it should keep it clamped.

Bob,
I wired mine from the bus to ground. The idea is that the diode will
clamp the voltage and prevent any over voltage from reaching your
instruments. Typically if an alternator goes wild this will cause a high
current to flow though the diode and blow the alternator fuse.

I got "my tires" today from Tire Science, Inc. which I posted a couple
of days ago as a source for Nanco . WRONG TIRES . . . they shipped
the same Carlisle tires I had gotten right down the street from me and
found to be too tall and too wide for my gear forks despite having the
same 4.80 x 8 description. I told these folks the whole story when
placing my order, being extremely careful to be explicit in having to
have the Nanco brand tire. UGHHHHHHHHHH
I had no idea there would be such a variation in tire profile among
different brands of 4.80 x 8 tires. Buyer beware!!
