    Subject: Caterpillar switch
--> Zenith-List message posted by: ZSMITH3rd@aol.com Another builder is seeking info on the switch used by Caterpillar on various of their heavy equipment. Commonly known as the "battery switch" but the question is: Any builders on the list with access to Cat database for part number info, price, etc?? Most of the installations I've seen used a switch requiring a "Cat key" to turn on-off. There is a version that is equiped with a handle very similar to the handle on a fuel valve (no "key" required) just a quarter turn and it "clicks" real loud. Subject: Venturi's
--> Zenith-List message posted by: RiteAngle3@aol.com Venturi's For those expecting modern electronic performance out of a Venturi, forget it. They depend upon airflow to get the vacuum. When I started flying it was the norm to have a Venturi, Vacuum pumps were for the big Cessna 180s! During runup, if you had a gyro horizon it might start getting erected, then during the takeoff run it would sometimes get up to a useful rotor RPM, but it still wasn't adjusted correctly! Once at speed, the gyros would work fine, the serious problem is in the initial takeoff ~ and when slowing down for landing~~you really don't have much vacuum. The 2" venturi worked excellent for the old turn and slip indicators, as they seemed to get to operational speed faster. The venturi was the reason we had to learn the old Needle, Ball & Airspeed ~~What else was there. IF you have speed the 4" Venturi's work excellent, however the Zenith series aren't quite fast enough for good operation "in my opinion" We tried them on quite a few Champs, Chief's, Luscombes, Funks and other comparable aircraft. The Piper Colt was about the bottom of the line speed wise for the 4" gyro to run instruments good enough for instrument training, about 600 hours in them in 63. They later went to a vacuum pump as the Cessna 150 also got modern if I recall correctly, been a long time ago. There are several alternatives available, but are expensive, or don't work all the time with the same problems as the venturi's. Do you really expect to fly IFR in your bird?? If not WHY carry the weight, cost and problems of all the non essential stuff. To improve performance add lightness, not weight! I personally enjoy flying a light aircraft with the minimum equipment, it keeps your head outside the cockpit where it belongs! Personally I would pick a safety device over an attitude indicator & directional gyro on a light sport aircraft type every time, much lighter and beneficial! Just my two bits worth from over 40 years of flying for a living in aircraft from Aeronca C-3 to Boeing 767. Elbie Mendenhall www.riteangle.com DO NOT ARCHIVE

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dave Pepper" <rockinrimranch@earthlink.net> PC Flight Systems has a new EFIS 5000 for $1995 that looks like it's very competitive with Dynon. It has a bigger screen (4" x 6" ) and is only 2" deep to fit tight panels. The Dynon is 7" deep. Has anyone heard anything about this system? Thanks...Dave

    Subject: Venturi--my error
--> Zenith-List message posted by: RiteAngle3@aol.com I don't believe I made myself clear in my earlier posting-- IF you have 4" vacuum with both instruments on line they should work. Insure all lines are open and clear, filters are new, instruments overhauled or at least checked for satisfactory operation. Also some instruments may require more than 4" check all information you can get on them, talk to an instrument shop that overhauls the instruments you have. I've flown lots of approaches with 4" vacuum running two gauges. You might try a 9" venturi, just use a vacuum regulator to get the vacuum you want. Elbie www.riteangle.com

--> Zenith-List message posted by: ZSMITH3rd@aol.com Gentlemen: Those desiring a healthy battery disconnect might visit www.colehersee.com The Pt.No. 75908 switch is the obvious choice, addition of the "lockout device" listed on one of their sheets is a good extra. Lots of PDF downloads available. Cole Hersee is the source of the previously-mentioned Caterpillar battery switch. The Cat part number for the Cat version is 7N718 which is listed on e-bay for about US$40. This is the switch with the "Cat key" (which is NOT the key shown in Cole Hersee web site). do not archive Zed Smith/701/R912/9x.xx%

--> Zenith-List message posted by: roy vickski <rvickski@yahoo.com> Martin, If you have questions about the the design, why risk your life? Maybee you could clamp the suspected piece in a vice and start hanging weight on it just to see what happens, then divide the weight that it took to break the piece or shear the bolt into your suspected gross weight divided by two multiplied by six then divided by four, then if the weight was one point five times the results of your calculation, wah-lah, you are now safe and proved it,. Wait till you get to the lower motor mount , the same concern may surface, by the way are you going electric start or hand prop with the corvair, I decided hand prop with mine, Roy 701sp corvair efi Still welding on fuel tanks , fuse on gear, tail feathers, weldments besides motor mount complete, wing ribs and spars good to go. do not archive __________________________________ http://promotions.yahoo.com/design_giveaway/

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Joemotis@aol.com Greetings listers, The Huntington Beach Airplane Company is back from vacation. This vacation included a side trip to Clovis CA. and a visit with Jack Russell and his 601 XL and what an enjoyable visit it was. It was the first one that I had seen in person, and it was a beautiful example. Todays question; On the rear ribs on the 601 XL wings, the photo guide gives us one (1!!!) picture and says cleco them to the centerline. O.K. with that but there is a bit of up or down "adjustment" on the rib to the spar. So which way do we go? All up, all down, or split the difference? Or does it really matter as long as whatever we do, we do it all the same? Thanks to all Joe Motis 601 XL Working on wings Do not archive
