List,
The 601XL plans (p. 6-W-12) specify a particular spring for use in the Landing
Light assembly. Does anyone know of a source other than ZAC for these springs?
Are they an automotive part, or is there an auto equivalent (I cannot imagine
this is a part where aeronautical standards are a must)? If there is an automotive
equivalent or I am just blind and the required part is in the ACS catalog,
please advise.
Thanks.

I did a Google search for "PC Flight Systems EFIS 5000" and only came up
with one hit that mentioned it. Do you have a link?

PC Flight Systems has a new EFIS 5000 for $1995 that looks like it's very
competitive
with Dynon. It has a bigger screen (4" x 6" ) and is only 2" deep to fit
tight panels. The Dynon is 7" deep. Has anyone heard anything about this
system?
Thanks...Dave

Check out the local boat store for a heavy duty DC contactor switch. They
got 'em there. Better yet, what does electric Bob have to say about this
setup ? (Aeroelectric.com) Also on the Matronics pages and archives. I would
yield any design or application decisions like the use of this switch to
what Bob has to say on the subject...

There doesn't seem to be much information available. I did find their site
and downloaded a PFD on the EFIS5000. I like the size of it compared to the
Dynon EFIS-D10. However, I did not like their presentation of values on the
screen. They are all the same color and size scattered all over the screen.
It would seem to be hard to get used to as to what is what. Compared to the
D10, where they use bars and highlighted different colors for different
functions. It would appear to be easier to discern what is what at a quick
glance.
What they, P C Flight, seemed to over look is that we don't for the most
part make our living in a cockpit, that is we aren't behind the wheel all
day. Things need a short learning curve and be as obvious as possible.
Just my quick off the cuff opinion, for what it's worth. I might see it
differently once I have more info.

Just type in EFIS500 on your search(use google) and you will get
www.pcflightsystems.com/images/PCFSPRODUCTS2003.pdf .
It's a pdf with very, very little info.

If I understand this thread the consideration is to replace the battery contactor/solenoid,
usually mounted on the firewall, and substitute a switch in the cockpit,
the function of which would be to supply power to the starter solenoid
forward the firewall.
Wouldn't this wire (10 AWG or greater?) be "hot" all the time? In the remote chance
that a less-than-scheduled landing be required, how would you minimize the
arcing/sparking that could occur if the wire is torn loose from the switch
or the switch comes into contact with the framework or metal part of the panel?
(A response # 2) Flipping off your "master" prior to touchdown still has power
in the cockpit.
Electrocuted Bob calls for a master that simply grounds the battery solenoid, thus
latching it on. When the master is turned off, all power stays forward of
the firewall. Would not this be a good thing?
My a/c would not be flying were it not for the help of two other list members who,
with great patience, guided me through the morass of wiring. This rule -
no power in the cockpit if master is off - dominated their advice. If I'm missing
something in the original question I apologize for my meager understanding.
FWIW - Issue #108 of the Zenair News (page 2) has a short note taken from the EAA's
Technical Counselor News - talks of a 50 amp switch (marine use) from Pegasus
Racing Supplies (800) 688-6946. Part number 4431, about $30, has removable
key.

So I guess my question is...Are these devices meant to prevent a against a
spike or are they designed as a true voltage regulator?
I'm not an electronics expert but I believe the circuitry would be quite
differrent. For so little money it kinda sounds way too good to be true.
Can anyone offer advice?

Frank,
As I read the specs for the part if properly mounted it will dissipate
800 watts, since the Suburu alternator is 60 amps at 12 volts that is
720 watts, so it should keep it clamped.

Joe: I took a flexible metal rule and clamped it to the top of the rib and the
spar just as the skin would be. Then I clamped the rib to the face of the spar
and drilled. I seemed to work well with all the space the same on the bottom
which isn't much. Jack
Joemotis@aol.com wrote:Todays question; On the rear ribs on the 601 XL wings, the

us one (1!!!)
picture and says cleco them to the centerline. O.K. with that but there is a
bit of up or down "adjustment" on the rib to the spar. So which way do we go?
All up, all down, or split the difference? Or does it really matter as long as
whatever we do, we do it all the same?

Hi,
Ive come to the conclusion I don't need a vacuum driven directional
gyro and attitude indicator after milling over venturi issues etc.
and thinking about the input from you folks.
Sooo, I have the following instruments for sale, they are brand new
from Gulf-Coast Avionics, never been spooled up.
Sigma-Tek 5000B-38 Attitude Indicator : $300 b/o
Sigma-Tek 4000B-30 Directional Gyro: $300 b/o
UMA 3-200-12 Suction Gauge : $25
Both of the Gyros are roughly $500 and the gauge is $50 so if your
looking to throw a couple of vacuum gauges into your panel and want
to save a few hundred bucks drop me a line off-list, Ill even throw
in shipping (within the US).
Thanks

Hey Andrew,
You might have better prospects selling these on Ebay to the certified
folks...Unless someone has a Rotax of course.
Now how about that Digitrack autopilot eh?...:)

These type of devices are designed to protect against over voltages not
to replace the voltage regulator on an alternator. Alternators are
regulated by varying their field current to limit the power output. If
you want something that would "regulate" a runaway alternator to the
proper voltage it would have to dissipate several hundred watts for a
prolonged period (Hmmm cabin heat). Typically you let the alternator do
the regulating and use the Transient Voltage suppressers protect your
instruments from short spikes and cause an overload on the alternator in
a runaway situations to blow the alternator fuse.

!/4 inch is fine. There is no air flow, just pressure in the line. My
pitot tube is 1/4 inch aluminum so 1/4 line works fine, but use a hose
clamp.

Dave,
The manual is cheep, $59 on his web site at
http://www.flycorvair.com/products.html if anyone deserves to make $59 for
they're hard work it's William. I'm buying the manual next week; a friend I
work with showed me his copy, well worth the price.
