For general information.
I finally found the right alternator I've been looking for. It's out of a 86 Toyota
Tercel, uses a serpentine belt, built in regulator, weighs 8 lbs. In case
someone wants to buy one from an autoparts store, the re-builder's part number
is 14843 . They are expensive, about $130 plus core.
I found mine at a bone yard for $30, then had it tested at an autoparts.
Take a look, www.gyrostabs.com

Hi Jim;
1/4" is certainly big enough. Even 3/16 will work which gives a slight
weight saving.

1/4 is more than adequate...If you think about it a pitot hose is not
flowing any air so even a 1/16th hose would work...Unless you got water in
it or tried to connect it to the 1/4" connections on the instruments that
is...:)

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Trampas" <tstern@nc.rr.com>
To clear things up a bit...
There are two types of alternators out there. One is the field based
alternator and the second is a permanent magnet alternator.
The field based alternator is regulated by changing the field current to
control the magnet field in the alternator which then regulates the output
voltage/current. Advantage is light weight, high current output, great
efficiency. Disadvantage is that most will not work with a completely dead
battery. This is the alternator used in most cars today.
The permanent magnet alternators work by having permanent magnets for
fields. In this case the faster you turn the alternator the more power and
voltage you get from alternator. Thus you need an external regulator to
regulate the power. Theses regulators are usually very inefficient and
generate a lot of heat, especially at high RPMs. The permanent magnet
alternators have the advantage of being simpler and will operate with a 100%
dead battery. Disadvantage is weight, and usually lower output current. Also
it is more common for this type of alternator to have regulator problems.

Hi
Just so you know I live in Canada where you have to pretty much double what
you boys pay. I had talked to William and know what it's worht in the US.
$59. He told me it was $89 US. Now I know he deserves all of it for what
he's done but I work hard for my money and was just trying to cut some costs
in building this XL. That's All. If I have to get it from William then I
will. I just thought there might be someone out here who is done with
their's

Jim,
If you are going to use tygon tubing, check the archives for "tygon tube
and rubber grommets" or similar. I believe that Don Honabach posted some
problems with interaction between rubber grommets and tygon. He found
deterioration of the tubing where rubber grommets were used to secure the
tubing.

Jim. Van's has a pitot static kit with hose for $18.50 The static ports are pop
rivets with the mandrel pushed out. This had plenty of hose for my CH601HDS.

Now that you mention that I remember something about that now.
Good point!! Ill have to check into that. I know there are many variants
of tygon. Maybe nylon bushings will be better. I was going to use
adel clamps for most of the holders but they are some kind of black
rubber also.

Why Use Tygon? Polyethylene or Nylon will work just as well, costs less than
half as much and can be found at most hardware or builder supply stores. You
are only dealing with about 1 PSI.
