Looks like one of these could be mounted thru the firewall and operated with a choke cable, thus saving some money while freeing up some amperage for better use. That's what I'm going to try, anyway. Is the trim capable of trimming for approach speeds with flaps down, at least for the first notch of flaps? The more general question would be is what is the hands-off speed with flaps down (both settings) and trim full down trim? The only trim type available seems to be the RAC (MAC) electric trim. Have other types that have been used successfully on the 701 (e.g. manual, spring )? I saw in an old notice mention the availability of a manual trim. If the consensus is that the RAC is the way to go, I'll just order the trim with the tail kit. Thanks. Corbalis" Subject: Zenith-List: Main contactor --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Leo J. Corbalis" I checked my contactor from aircraft spruce, 18 ohms. This will require 780 ma. or.78amps., continueous. An alternative arrangement can be made where the starter contactor connects directly to the battery. All Electronics has an automotive ice cube relay (shape and size) that can easily handle all your power needs and it has a mounting tab.The resistance is 81 ohms which takes only 180 ma or .18 amps to run continueously. The NC (normally closed) contacts are rated at 30 amps. The NO (normally open) contacts are rated at 40 amps when you apply power and close them. I use one in paralell with the starter contactor coil to disconnect power from everything but the start switch. My electronics max out at less than 10 amps., well within the limits of the NC contacts. This disconnects all the radios etc. from power while the engine is cranking (putting all kinds of spikes on the line) which will make them last much longer. I alos use one to power my autopilot servo because the AP switch is tiny and will burn out. www.allelectronics.com cat # RLY-631 $2.25. They are so cheap because the diode inside is bad. You will have to add an external diode to suppress the spike generated when any relay (inductor) is switched OFF. I recommend 1N400, yes the voltage rating seems more than needed but my experience is the extra $.03 is more than worth it. You can solder it to the base of the coil pins and not interfere with the relay socket CAT # SRLY-2 $2.00 which is worth it. or you can use push on sockets to each pin. One more caveat, never mount any relay with the moving arm axis of rotation (hinge) paralell to the engine crankshaft. This relay, don't mount it with the pins pointing fore or aft. I learned that lesson flying RC models in 1954. I am going to build the Zodiac XL and use WW's corvair engine plan. I am pretty sure I will be able to construct the ac, so it is not critical that i start with the rudder to see if i will enjoy the process. however, it seems pretty low cost to do the rudder as its price is deducted from the tail kit. I am thinking that it may be smart to order the plans and CD and study it for a little while before i start building. In any event, after the tail section, what order would you suggest as to the rest of the plane. my initial thought is to do the fuse first and the wings and other parts after. Just don't have any idea or preference. What are your views. John butterfield
