Jon,
I am in the process of rebuilding my firewall to the new plans just as
you have. Yes, the bungee pin position has moved BUT...you don't use the
same bungee. The new one is a different part and is significantly
shorter than the old one. If you are using the new one you may find that
the nose gear is too soft and you may risk a prop strike if the nose
drops down hard. Just a thought.
Cheers,

is that MAYBE just reducing the bungee cord tension in the unloaded
position may solve this problem.

Phil,
I did order the part number bungee from the new plans... but you got me
wondering... I'll have to double check and try to verify that it is correct!
I always thought the original design was WAY too hard... and am hoping this
softer design would make things nicer....but, you got me wondering now.....!

I just returned from Sun'n Fun with a photo of William Wynne's

It looks like he bent the edges somehow to make it stronger.

John (Croke),
What is Delrin and its properties?
I have somewhat the same setup as you for the nose centering bearing. I ordered
sheets of Nylon 66 from McMaster Carr one of them 1/4 " thick for the nose steering.
I also slightly shallowed out the V. The other thinner Nylon 66 is for
fairlead material. It seems tough enough. But.... then I saw another builder
site (601) that used UHMW Plastic for his. I ordered a sheet of this (1/4") from
US Plastics corp.
I have not done anything with this yet but it does seem a softer material. I cut
the pieces slightly higher than the Aluminum, maybe 1/8" or less. I am concerned
about the nylon cracking (or whatever I end up using) in cold temps, possibly
jamming the rudder in flight. I can say (on the bench) with no bungee installed
at all, the nose strut turns alot easier riding on the nylon.
Thanks
Brian

Hello All:
I have a question that requires practicle knowledge of the 601HD/HDS
fuselage.
I and a partner have the opportunity of acquiring a 601hds project (why we want
to do this is irrelevant to the question). My partner stands almost 6ft 3inch.
We both flew in a scratch built 601 with a gull wing canopy. His legs extended
several inches past the peddles. The builder of the aircraft custom made
the seat and he is about 5 ft 10 inches tall. The issue is this, if you build
the 601 with the stnd bubble canopy as per Zenith specs can someone 63 fit
comfortably. What I would really like to do is find a stnd 601HD somewhere in
North Carolina, USA and see if he fits. Unfortunately for us I cant find one
and the fuselage on the potential project has been disassembled for deburring
and priming. My specific question has 3 parts. 1: Is there such an aircraft
near us (Raleigh NC)? 2: can the stnd HD fit a big guy, or can it be easily
customized to fit (minor changes). Lastly, Is there anyone over 62 out there who
has tried this. Thanks phill

Hi, All
This may be a question for Nick, but I'll run it by the group anyhow. In the
kit for my CH701, the 8.00-6 tires are marked 'Tube Type' on the sidewalls.
However, only the valve stems are included, no tubes. Will these seal up to
the rims or should I go shopping for some tubes?
Has anyone else encountered this? My gut feel says go get some tubes.

That's the access panel that is shipped with the XL kit, which is used
for mounting the battery in the rear fuse if necessary depending on
engine choice. The edges are flanged for strength by ZAC.

I'm 6-1 / 210lbs and built my 601 according to the plans to allow the
maximum headroom (move rudders slightly forward and drop seat bottoms
all the way down).
I sat in my aircraft for the first time and was most pleasantly
surprised by the amount of room I had. My legs were very comfortable
and I will need to add a good deal of foam to my seat bottoms so my
head is above the panel where I can see. You should have no problems
with 6-3. I was very worried about this myself and didn't know for
sure that it wasn't an issue until this week when I sat in it
(finally had put the nose-gear on).

Only the valve stems were included? Usually these are attached to the tubes
unless the rims you have are designed for tubeless tires and the stems
attach to them. Do the rims have gaskets between the two halves? In any case
I doubt that tube type tires will seal to tubeless rims, but they might. If
you bought the kit and it was supposed to have tubes and you didn't get
them, it was probably just an oversight. Contact ZAC and they will probably
send out a set at no charge. I've discovered missing pieces in my kit and
ZAC shipped them right out.

Making the edges that way is easy (I did it to my fuse top skins to give a
more finished edge. Simply take your panel and hng the edge over the
workbench edge by say 3/8ths inch. Take a 2*4 and use it to clamp the skin
down with your own weight.
Tap along the edge of the alu sheet to give the curve.
Or you can buy a simply roller tool to do it real quick.

Hi Scott,
That's an excellent location for an access hatch. Where you need it the
most.
On problem with mine is that you have to disconnect the rudder cables if you
want to get inside.
On the other hand, with mine you can access anywhere in the tail cone.

Larry,
That's what I thought when I first looked at the tires. However they are
tubeless tires. If you look closely you may be able to see the "less"
stamped below the area of the "tube type" I guess it means tube type = less.
Anyway install the o-ring between the wheel halves, make sure you don't
pinch it in there, and push the stem in. My tires lose a very slight amount
of air over time, but most low pressure tires do that.
I haven't flown mine yet but heard that the tires can be out of balance
enough to make it bounce on landing. I will definitely check my balance
before flying.

I'm just wondering what people are doing for the slots in the firewall where
the nose wheel push rods go through the firewall?
I originally had leather boots on there but after 24 hours they were
cracked.
I don't like the zenair way of just having a piece of baffle material with a
slot in it. After a short period of time you have a permanent hole by your
feet.
Is there any off the shelf item that might work?

I'm 6'2" and find the Zodiac's seat to be pretty good. I did have to
adjust my rudder pedals almost all the way forward. Actually, it's a
little TOO far forward now. I'm going to make a new set of links and
bring the pedals BACK a little.
When I built the plane, I moved the main instrument panel forward 2"
(with ZAC's blessing). This allows me to stand on the wing-walk and
plant my BIG size 12's right on the floor without any fancy gyrations,
AND it gave more leg clearance from the bottom of the panel allowing
room for the extra switch panels that Jim talked about.
http://www.lightflyers.com/panel.jpg
http://www.lightflyers.com/zpanel.jpg
I placed the seat pan as low as possible and have installed about 3 or 4
inches of foam at the bottom of the seat, about 2 inches of foam in the
seatbacks. When the wife is in the plane she slips another 2 inch foam
pad under the right seat so she can see over the dashboard.
Width is GREAT at 44 inches... at least it is compared to the Avid
Mark-IV I was building a couple of years ago (39").
It fits for me :)

I bought some "brush strip" for the underneath of doors that require draft
exclusion from Home Depot.
Cut a piece either side of each slot...Works great.

I assume the 601 slots are about the same size as the 801. If so look into
the Matronics archives and I posted a source for covers that work great in my
801. Yahama boots. I forgot the part numbers though.

I don't think cutting boards are made of UHMW. I have run wear tests on
UHMW Polyethelene, and Delrin and Nylon all run against aluminum. Nylon
wears most, Delirn intermediated and UHMW by far the least.

I should have known. :) Hard to say....I wish I was there to see every
square inch first hand! Will you be posting them on a web site somewhere?
Don't go to too much trouble, but it would be reassuring to me (and
perhaps other XL builders) to compare our work with that of someone far
better at this sort of thing! (WW). Actually maybe William will post more
pics on his site. Of course, using a Corvair, I'm especially curious
about the engine and related mounting and instrumentation.

We both flew in a scratch built 601 with a gull wing canopy. His legs extended
several inches past the peddles. The builder of the aircraft custom made
the seat and he is about 5 ft 10 inches tall. The issue is this, if you build
the 601 with the stnd bubble canopy as per Zenith specs can someone 63 fit
comfortably. What I would really like to do is find a stnd 601HD somewhere
in North Carolina, USA and see if he fits.
Lastly, Is there anyone over 62 out there
who has tried this. Thanks phill

I riveted a steel strip and shim on each side of both slots forming a track
for another steel strip to slide in. The track is about twice as long as the
sliding strip and wide enough to allow the strip to move side to side as the
nose wheel strut turns. The area is coated with grease to allow smooth
movement in the track. I put a length of lavatory supply tubing made of
chrome plated brass on each nosewheel steering rod held in place with a nut
at each end. These run in a plastic grommet installed in the sliding strip.
With no weight on the nose wheel, the steering slots are completely closed
off by the steel strip. At rest, only about 1/4" of the slots are open.

Yes this is a technique that lots of RV builders and others use. A simple
hand tool with two rollers slightly offset from each other and pull the
aluminum thru it. It makes this nice looking crease. Some buy the tool and
some just buy to shower door rollers and mount them on a piece of .060,
6061 T6. That tool is available from lots of suppliers like Avery and
others. Tom

You could have it laser cut. I was going to have my panel laser cut, but
after spending many hours drawing it exactly how I wanted it in Autocad, I
was quoted over $300 to have it done. I had been given a ballpark of $100.
Making the file was good for planning though. I ended-up printing the file
at 1:1 and using it as a template for cutting the panel myself.

To all.
Today I got the official airworthiness certificate from an Anchorage FSDO
rep. Taxi and "in ground effect" tests indicate good handling
characteristics. I plan to take it around the pattern tomorrow. Watch this
space for flight report.
Thanks to all participants in the Zenith matronics list, I have gathered
many hints from builders of 801s and other models from reading your
discussions.
