I believe the regulation reads that the test flight can carry only 'crew members' -- no passengers. My wife (a commercial pilot/flight instructor) flew the test flights with me as co-pilot, which came in handy when my trim fuse burned out on takeoff. She replaced the fuse while I flew and we were able to complete the flight -- also she did the radio work, monitored engine gauges, watched for airport traffic, etc... Our local RAA inspector agreed with my interpretation of the rules that this was legal. (BTW it turned out that the trim fuse burnt out only if I trimmed while the PTT button was being used -- i.e. I'd inadvertantly reversed a wire in the MAC grip ...) -- Grant Corriveau C-GHTF / HDS / CAM100 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 08:49:13 AM PST US From: "Graham Kirby" Subject: Zenith-List: 601 Nosewheel versus tailwheel decision pts rule name description ---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------------- --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Graham Kirby" Given the great and frequent discussion of problems/challenges with the 601 nosewheel mechanism I am almost settled on building my 601HD as a taildragger. Has anyone who has built a 601 taildragger had any mechanical issues with the tailwheel arrangement? For example, does the rudder self-center as it should? Thanks Graham Kirby 601HD ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 10:51:28 AM PST US From: Mike Fothergill Subject: Re: Zenith-List: 601 Nosewheel versus tailwheel decision QUARANTINE_LEVEL=4.0 KILL_LEVEL=5.0 --> Zenith-List message posted by: Mike Fothergill Hi Graham; You will need to attach long soft springs from the pedals to the firewall to keep the tension on the cables. The Matco tail wheel works well if the linkage to the rudder is set up so that the tail wheel unlocks just at full rudder travel. We use it in high power rocketry to protect the parachutes from the black powder ejection blast. Simple to use, flexible denim-type cloth. The sliding piece of aluminum moves freely, but seals as well as any other method. No drag anywhere on the rod or slider. Larry C.
