I remember the excitement of making my first rib, completing the rudder, attaching the rear fuse to the fwd fuse, turning on the electrical system, running the engine for the first time (idle), assembling the plane in my backyard, etc etc.... Yesterday, while this is not the ultimate achievement of getting the plane in the air, I got another of these exciting moments. We adjusted the engine (Fernand, my mentor was helping me---or should I say the reverse?), installed the propeller, tied the plane securely, sat in it and took a stationnary ride! Oh is this exciting! The engine that I rebuilt myself works like a charm, very stable, good pickup of power, good idle (1000 rpm), WOW! We ran it at 4200 rpm for a while.... it seems that my cowling is also working well :) Water temp did not go beyond 193F and Oil Temps is (too?) cool at 170F. The radiator is mounted inside the cowling... of course a lot more tests are required to draw relevant conclusions on these (and we want to bring rpm up to 4800 rpm). If there was one disapointment, it is with my ignition system. While setting the timing, we busted one ignition. And the other one went away when we were done with the engine run (engine stopped when we pulled throttle way back rapidly before planned engine shutdown). So, both ignitions are now dead... I don't know which of the modules or coils are damaged as I had nothing to test them at the airport. The ignition system is composed of Mitsubishi integrated pickup/module and NAPA IC107 coils; no ballast resistor (yet). If anyone here has any expertise or knowledge related to this, please let me know.... Anyway, I call this a good day! Michel who has not only changed oil in a lawn mower, but also rebuilt an engine! do not archive. ===== ---------------------------- Michel Therrien CH601-HD, C-GZGQ http://mthobby.pcperfect.com/ch601 http://www.zenithair.com/bldrlist/profiles/mthobby http://pages.infinit.net/mthobby __________________________________ http://photos.yahoo.com/ph/print_splash ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 09:24:02 AM PST US From: John Maselli - optonline Subject: Re: Zenith-List: N801ZA Flies --> Zenith-List message posted by: John Maselli - optonline Congrats Jim, The Pics look great. However, to cover up their "uglyness", I sandwiched the boots between layers of brown aluminum roof flashing. They look very good and should be very robust in keeping fire and flames out of the cabin for quite a while. If anyone out there wants pictures, I would be glad to email them. Probably the lightest yet. How long do you think the nomex cloth would last with constant flexing? Congratulations, Michel! Time to start thinking about that PP license, eh? Salut Carlos who has an electric lawn mower.... :o( (started at the same time as Michel, still building wings - but I'll get there!) ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 06:49:29 PM PST US From: "Frank Jones" Subject: RE: Zenith-List: Test Pilot --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Frank Jones" Peter, I believe if you check the restrictions on the C of A you find that there is an exception if there are two on board for purposes of dual instruction. Presumably the PIC would need to have an instructor rating and it would be legal to have 2 aboard. At least as far as I know. I put a map compartment in the right side of my panel to hold maps, the POHB, etc. I wish I had more space. There is a hole in the right seat front (the same hole on the left side is where the flap handle comes through). Before riveting the seat bottom, a .016 box could be fitted behind the hole to hold small things like flash light, extra oil (if put into a clean brake fluid bottle), tie down ropes, etc. I wish I had thought of this before I finished, I may try to retrofit one. Something to consider before riveting the seats. Chuck D. First of all, if you have any qualms about using an experienced test pilot because you don't want him to risk flying the airplane you built, then you shouldn't fly it either. Having built the airplane according to the plans and using technical counselors and just being thorough should provide a safe craft. I would say that a pilot with the proper experience, builder/owner or not, is the right thing for the first flight. Low time pilots should not fly the first flight. I have a wife and 2 young kids, and whereas I am confident in my construction I almost feel it would be irresponsible to not use a test pilot for the first flight. >
