Howdy Chuck, How are things going down in Texas.
Jon had mentioned this in his new site about some creative "experimental" items
people have built into their planes.

Listers,
The 701 has an open baggage area behind the seats but not any closed-in storage.
I put a map compartment in the right side of my panel to hold maps, the POHB,
etc. I wish I had more space.
There is a hole in the right seat front (the same hole on the left side is where
the flap handle comes through). Before riveting the seat bottom, a .016 box
could be fitted behind the hole to hold small things like flash light, extra
oil (if put into a clean brake fluid bottle), tie down ropes, etc. I wish I had
thought of this before I finished, I may try to retrofit one. Something to
consider before riveting the seats.

I just finished the same firewall mods. The new re-inforced bungee
hole location takes a shorter bungee (8"), p/n 1090, but it is rated
at 750 lbs, as opposed to the original 10" 9010HD, rated at 475.
Seems to me that that would increase pressure on the nose gear stop,
all else being equal...
Since I have a relatively light 582, I decided to ignore the new
re-inforced holes and go back to the original 300mm hole location
and original longer, weaker bungee.

For some time I have been pondering as to which heater core to use in my 701 with
a Subaru setup. I accidentally found what may be perfect for the setup. I
have a 95 Subaru Legacy behind my shop. I took the engine out a while back to
use in a gyro. The other day I happened to look inside and saw the heater.
I removed the core and was very pleasantly surprised. The core is all aluminum,
I put in on a postal scale and it weighs 1.25 lbs, is approximately 8" X 8"
X 1", the inlet and outlet are 5/8" OD. The part I really like about it is
that both the inlet and outlet tubes are attached to the top of the core via separate
plates with four screws systemically placed. Which means you can easily
move the tubes to any position to fit your needs or make new ones with out
having to weld to the core. Just thought I would pass it along FYI.
A second thought on heater cores while I'm at it. A few days ago someone asked
about the sizes of the inlet and outlet tubes as to which size was for inlet
vs which for outlet. Someone else replied the it really didn't matter that if
you wanted more heat put the smaller of the two as the outlet. Well I have to
respectfully disagree. If you use the smaller tube as the return, you are building
up pressure in the heater core. And, you don't want that. The liquid
should not be restricted any more than possible at the core. The outlet is always
the same size or larger for a reason. Remember you have 180+ degree water
not too far from the jewels and the electrically system. If the core springs
a leak, you want it to run out on the floor, not create a high pressure spray.

Hey Everybody,
I am installing the seat belts in my 601HDS and I have a question that defies my
conventional wisdom. The planse call for AN4-5A bolts to be used. This would
indicate to me to use a nylock washer of corresponding size. However, it seems
to me that the seat balt attachment harnesses should be able to "float" around
the connecting bolt. Am I wrong in this assumption? Should I use a nylock
nut and torque it down tight making it so the harnesses don't move around the
bolt?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve Freeman

Did anyone else notice at Sun n Fun, how much nicer the interior of the
Skyshop CH701s (both the planes on wheels and amphib floats) were then the Zenith
701display model? In addition to having better carpeting and instrument
panels, the Skyshop planes had nice touches like having the headphone jacks above
the rear storage area preventing the cords from getting in the way and a very
neatly installed fuel selector in the same area. The Skyshop 701s just had a
more "professionally looking" feel to the interior.

I'm trying to order my piano hinges for the elevator/stab assembly and need some
help. The plans call for MS20257. Do you guys suggest the MS20257p which is
aluminum (grade?) or MS20257c which is SS? Also do I have to order the pin separately?

I think the pin usually comes with the hinge. Just be sure you use the
one that has a stainless steel pin instead of the AL pin. There's
something mentioned on ZAC's web site about this.

I noticed. I also noticed how superbly fabricated the Czech Republic 601XL
was in front of the EAA booth. It was the all-white 601XL if you happened
to notice. Very nice airplane with fantastic attention to detail.
Those skyshop floats were beautiful! I was drooling all over them (or was
that the rain?) Anyway it shows what can happen if you take your time and
pay attention to detail.

I used the same hardware and found the seat belts should be at least
rotational. My shoulder harnesses
are rigid to keep them oriented correctly to the stress. The seat belts
will be adjusted to fit several angles
and would probably be best tensioned to the correct angle when buckled.

before you all get mixed up further.
there are 3 different ways to register light planes in canada and each
catagory carries a different set of rules.
the most confusing is when registered as a homebuilt but has a gross weight
under 1200 lbs which lets an ultralight instructor give lessons and a private
pilot carry passengers

I've been looking at the 1300CC Suzuki conversion and it seems to have merit, e.g.,
electronic ignition, fuel injection, turbo charge compatible, 100 to 120
h.p. and 168 lbs. The one thing I'm concerned about is lack of dual ignition.
Should this be a show stopper? I know that current state of the art systems
are very reliable but I still have that uneasy feeling about a single ignition
system. Comments would be appreciated.

Don't know how long a NOMEX boot will last, but seems very flexible,
and have seen no brittle splinters. Sort of like a heavy denim.
Another company - Giant Leap Rocketry- has KEVLAR cloth and thread.......

Jim,
Who makes that one? Is it car based or the Hayabusa bike engine?

defies my conventional wisdom. The planse call for AN4-5A bolts to be used.
This would indicate to me to use a nylock washer of corresponding size.
However, it seems to me that the seat balt attachment harnesses should be
able to "float" around the connecting bolt. Am I wrong in this assumption?
Should I use a nylock nut and torque it down tight making it so the
harnesses don't move around the bolt?
