Also, the relatively large cylinders in those engines benefit from having two flame fronts and the faster ignition that provides. Modern electronic ignition systems are far and away more reliable. You can also add a second ignition module that runs off a pickup coil mounted to the crank and drives a second coil that feeds the single spark plugs through a coil splitter. This is the option that I went with with my Stratus Subaru. -- Bryan Martin N61BM, CH 601 XL, Stratus Subaru. Airframe construction complete. Panel and engine installed. I would suggest the proper authority to comment is Zenith. I can say however that in similar applications , (rudder and elevator) applications some other kit mfgrs are specifying stainless. And that is what I used. I have seen a top rudder hinge that should have been stainless and was inadvertantly replaced with aluminum fail in this other application. The place it failed was at Airventure, Came real close to disaster. It did fail in the air. The rudder cocked off to one side by about 25 degrees from vertical and the plane would not steer (upon landing) Tailwheel plane. Very lucky the rudder did not start fluttering or it surely would have come off. Everything is sealed, not exposed to elements and no moving parts. I would venture a guess that Suzuki is just as dependable, probably made at the same factory. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Fosse" Subject: Zenith-List: Suzuki Engine Conversion, CH701 > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jim Fosse" > > I've been looking at the 1300CC Suzuki conversion and it seems to have merit, e.g., electronic ignition, fuel injection, turbo charge compatible, 100 to 120 h.p. and 168 lbs. I talked to ZAK a couple of times and they said that with the updated kit it won't be a problem. If you will notice, for CG purposes I mounted the engine a lot closer to the firewall than normal, about an inch at the closest point vs about 9 inches for a Rotax. The radiator will be in the fuselage with a P51 style scoop. This should help with CG, plus there ain't room up front. I will have to reroute the elevator cables. Plus I am using PegaStol wings which give an additional 100lbs useful load, thus compensating for the additional weight. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Laughlin" Subject: RE: Zenith-List: Larry Martin's Sub 701 > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Scott Laughlin" > > Jon: > > That's a beautiful installation. Single ignition....there is one drive coupling to the trigger sensor for the electronic ignition but there are 4 separate coils. One way to think about this is in modern automotive applications, there is no need for a backup system. I have never encountered a electrical failure that lead to a ignition failure in all the reading or forl lore I've have listened too. In my aircrafts I use Rotax 912's only because they were with the kit. My wife drove a Geo for 9 years for a total of 116,000 miles. This engine performed flawlessly with the exception of one instance. We sold the car to a salvage yard but kept the engine. The body and chassis was rotted out. The one instance that I previously mentioned is that one evening coming home from a church service the Serpentine belt broke and the battery sustained operation for about 10 minutes than the engine gradually lost power and than quit. I hate to admit this but had this engine had an "annual" this belt would have been found. Oil changes approx. every 67 thousand miles. Spark plugs were changed approx. at every 50,000 miles and one air filter at 75,000 miles, I suppose one could say that this engine was abused yet when I removed it and the transmission it was running like the day I bought it. I for one plan to use it in my next project (still looking) maybe a 601? Anyway I think this unit is an excellent candidate for aero power. There is a company that does Geo engine conversions but I can't remember their web site. So in closing I concur with Mr. Martins assessment on the dependability of single ignition installation with auto converstions Regards, RJ ________________________________ Message 14 ____________________________________ Time: 08:50:56 AM PST US From: RiteAngle3@aol.com Subject: Zenith-List: to my RiteAngle customers --> Zenith-List message posted by: RiteAngle3@aol.com Hi Zenith builders installing the RiteAngle AOA system. I am encouraged. I have been to the Raven web site but have concentrated on www.bilsamaviation.com. They are located in Poland and deal in the Euro dollar. They offer the 3 cylinder conversion as well as the 1300cc and the 1600cc. Their reduction unit is a geared unit, running in oil. They offer the engine mount and will eventually have the cowling for both the 601 and 701. I received a price quote on the 1300 today at 5800 Euro which translates today to $ 6972.00 U.S. Air freight from Warsaw is estimated at $400 to $500 U.S. The price of the engine includes a firewall forward package. They term their package as a "turn key unit" with all wiring, radiator, gauges, etc included. You won't see their price list on the web page. I have been dealing with them via email and they have been real responsive. Prices quoted for the 3 cyl (LS-1000) 80 h.p. was 5999 Euro and the LS-1600 (140 h.p.) was 7500 Euro. I don't know how long it will last but they quoted me a dealer discounted price (20%) for the 1300.. If the dollar improves on the world market, we could see a better price in U.S. dollars, but as it is, the price is not too bad, in my opinion that is. BTW, max rpm is 6000. The rest of the parts including wire connectors should be components purchased from the same people that provided the base (ZAC or A&S). The bulb plug-in should be one or two hots and a ground using the hot to the bulb(s) and the base or side jacket to the ground wire. Both would exit to a plug common to the strobe, if equipped, and the others require knife splice or bullet splice connections to get back to the switches or ground. This fixture should have arrived with a spring, a rubber disk and a phenolic disk with a hollow metal rivet in the center. It is into this hole you insert the hot 12-volt wire and solder it such that there is a slight balling on the lamp side. This constitutes the actual center contact for the lamp. As to the apparent "short" with the ohmmeter -- most of the less-expensive analog meters (Radio Shack, etc) don't have a true low-ohms range. The digital versions don't either. If you still have the instruction sheet, "zero" the meter, both open-circuit and shorted test leads per the sheet. Use the lowest range available on your meter. Measure a bulb on your work table. You'll hardly see a difference between shorted leads and the bulb. The filament is, as someone noted on the list, a curly piece of wire. It will indicate a "short" by itself. Remove the bulb from your lamp socket. The indication of a short as a result of the bulb should disappear as you measure center conductor to ground conductor. If you have any indication of continuity with the bulb removed, there is most likely a problem. One caution: If your meter has a "high" Ohms range (R x 10,000 or R x 1,000,000 for instance) switch to the highest range and wet your fingers; then hold the test leads, one in each hand. There is no shock hazard, but you'll be reading the resistance through your body. Same deal with plain water vs. salty water. This is one reason there are "ranges" on the meter.....so you can choose the appropriate range for the task at hand. The caution is that if you are measuring relatively high resistances and have your fingers touching the metal test probes you may get false measurements because you would be measuring your body about as much as the device you intended. Depending on the make/model of your meter, you may need to plug the leads into different holes for the various functions. Remember to use a known good battery. If its an analog it won't "zero" very well on a dead battery. Digitals usually have a LOW BATT warning, if it isn't already dead. Cheers, Toronto wins game 7! The engine is an original 912 without any overhaul. I know this because I asked Roger when I was at Sun & Fun. His is a working plane. I wonder why my wife's Lexus didn't give any warning when it just started running rough then died completely a year or so ago. Cheers, Phil Miller New Zealand (Do Not Archive) -----Original Message----- One way to think about this is in modern automotive applications, there is no need for a backup system. I have never encountered a electrical failure that lead to a ignition failure in all the reading or forl lore I've have listened too. The computer control system had diagnostics that will warn of a failure...as all modern auto computer systems have. == direct advertising on the Matronics Forums. == == == ________________________________ Message 26 ____________________________________ Time: 11:33:46 PM PST US From: "Dirk Slabbert" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Welding --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dirk Slabbert" No Jari, not at all, there's a lot of tricks to go into this, wait till you get to those 30 deg bends! Now you have a long weld in a half finished fuse, with too much heat input it warps out of shape! Took me many hrs and one discarded fuse before I got it right. Can send you pics of my project if you want.
