Jeff,
Thanks for the good words, there are points in the project where I have had to
stop and think carefully about what I am about to do for fear of screwing things
up good. You're right, I think I have thought too much about this and need
to just do it.
Thanks
Brian

Thanks for the help. I'm sure the ratio of measuring to drilling will be high for

Frank,
Remove the radio from the rack. Look at the top panel of the radio.
There should be a number of holes with silver tape covering them. One of
the holes is marked ST for sidetone. If you remove the tape you'll find
a Phillips head adjustment. If you turn it about 1/2 turn
counterclockwise you'll eliminate sidetone altogether. A 1/4
counterclockwise turn was all that was required to get my sidetone
volume to roughly equal the receive volume.
Hope your radio has the same feature.

A great post appeared in the Zenith forum about an in-flight cracked

Coincidentally, a really good article appeared in this months Aviation

Hi List. I would like to ask a question to tap into
your collective wisdom.
In keeping with the KISS principle for fuel systems I
would like to simply treat my inboard and outboard
tank as one tank on each side. I will have four
tanks, two in each wing. I want to have a simple
large diameter hose (1 inch?) connect the two left
wing tanks and a smaller hose connecting them higher
up for venting purposes. I would only have a filler
and external vent line on the outboard tank but drain
valves on both the outboard and inboard. Then do the
same for the right wing.
I would like your thoughts and comments on such a
system. From the inside of the plane I would simply
have two large tanks to switch between instead of 4
smaller ones. This is especially important as I will
have to run return fuel lines to the tanks with the
fuel injected system I am planning on using. It could
get really complex very quickly if I were to plumb it
as per 4 separate fuel tanks. Thanks for your views.
David

Yes the GM system is great. Its only drawback is that it needs a little more
cranking speed to make it fire. Make sure you keep your reluctor gap in the
distributor set to the min and ensure there is no (little) side play on the
shaft.
I found a period during the winter when it would not crank fast enough to
get it to start.
If this happens to you you can manually turn on the the SECOND igntition
just at the right time. This makes the thing spark and a couple of tries
always makes it fire right up.....:)

Hi Group,
The weekend has been a good weekend. Finally, I got
the engine working with the Nippodenso/GM HEI setup...
Today, I got the aircraft registration done.... Fun to
see my name and plane in the Transport Canada
database!
We sat in the plane tied down to the ground and ran
the engine for a while at 4400 rpm.. FUN! Cooling
appears to be good so I'm getting confident that I'll
have final inspection in may or june (if school leaves
me some time to finish preparing the aircraft).
Thanks to those of you who contacted me last week to
help.
I have a video online of engine turning, but it is a
big file for what you get... (is there a way to make
more efficient video files?)

Sounds like it will work as long as the fuel can transfer to the inboard
tank as fast as the fuel nozzle will deliver it. As I recall, other builders
have used a similar setup.

I have a couple of initial thoughts that I am happy to have shot down.
I am thinking that you do not need a vent on the inboard tank...Just the
large connection tube and the vent on the outboard tank.
The problem I see is that if you fill both tanks on one wing and for
somereason remove the cap for the inboard tank...I.e you will get fuel
gushing out the tank filler cap due to the incidence of the wings
(incidence maybe much greater on the HD(s) models.
I would return the fuel to the inboard tank just in the (very unlikly) case
of something going wrong with the outboard tank.
A wing tank only fuel injected system does create a few problems in my mind.
You are almost certainly into a 6 port fuel selector valve (I don't even use
a selector on my carb engined plane) which also means putting the pump(s) on
the outlet to the valve. This means sucking on a few feet of pipe with the
potential attendant vapour lock issues.
I am looking at the same situation on a fuel injected RV..I may even put a
primer pump at the outlet of each tank if they will fit.

I hope you're wearing your flak vest. :)
He needs a vent from the inboard tank to the outboard tank or the inboard
tank will not fill, he's only planning to have a filler cap on the outboard
tank. As the fuel flows through the lower tube from the outboard tank, the
air must exit the inboard tank through the upper tube.

The bottom of the inboard tank is a few inches above the cabin floor. If the
pump is near the low point of the system (near the gascolator) and the lines
leading to it offer minimal restriction to flow, the inlet to the pump will
have some pressure due to gravity feed. Not much but at least enough to
prevent suction from forming.
Or He could put the pumps at the outlet of the tanks and pressurize the
entire fuel line as is done on most autos now. In either case a 6 port valve
is needed.

I did the exact thing on my 801. Works ok. If I had to change anything I
would have put the ZAC tanks in the outboard section and my long range ones
inboard. That way the dihedral would work in my favor. KISS is the best way to
go
in the fuel system department....
