Hi Sudhir,
my name is Thilo and I have built a CH 601 HDS. My jobs brings my frequently
to China. Let me know your address in Shanghai, once you moved there. Maybe
we can meet some day.
I'm pretty sure, you will be able to build a 601 from plans in China. Most
of the materials are available. You can also find machine shops, that can
help you with the larger parts like the spar, etc.
Unfortunately, I can't help you with the registration process. However, it
might be possible. A few weeks ago I was in Bejing and saw 2 powered
paragliders flying around. So, there is some kind of small aviation around.
Good luck and best regards
Thilo Kind

Subject: | Insurance question |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: louiscfi@comcast.net
First off I would like to introduce myself. My name is Louis, and I am a professional
pilot in St.Louis, MO area. I, and a buddy of mine are planning to build
a kit xl using the corvair engine. In fact we just ordered the kit yesterday.
As for insurance....I called Falcon insurance in Texas a couple of wks ago and
they quoted me an amazing approx $825 per year for $1,000,000 limit, $100,000
per person $25,000 hull insurance per year. That's cheaper than insurance on
my dad's grumman and champ. They told me that AIG didnt care what engine was
in the airplane, the quote would have been the same for a certified engine/prop.
I wasnt asked about my flight experience, but the guy did ask me what I did for
a living, so maybe the quote was for a more experienced pilot/CFI, I dont know.
The only requirements to be met before coverage was 2 hours dual before solo
and one hour solo before carrying a pax. Also it is for a tri gear, so if
you are building tail dragger insurance will prob be higher. That quote also
included a 5% AOPA discount.
I would be quite interested to know if somehow I got a bad quote. So, maybe give
Baxter Allen's office in Texas a call. I did call AOPA too, but they wanted
$1500 per year for similar coverage, and I didnt even tell them about the corvair
engine.

I already posted about insurance, but here is my formal introduction to this list. My name is Louis. I, and a buddy of mine, Vince are going to build a kit xl in the St.Louis, MO area. In fact we just ordered the kit yesterday. We are planning to use a corvair engine per William Wynne's manual. Also planning to use an efis system from http://www.dynonavionics.com . 2 grand, and all those features, how cool? They are working on a neat engine monitor, but that may be just a little too much. Cant wait to start building.

I just did taxi test on N601Z (CH601HDS, Rotax 912 UL, taildragger) day
before yesterday. I have yet to attach the outer wings so I not only
have a stealth Zodie, but a really go fast one. After several high
speed runs down our 3000' grass strip, with hard breaking, I then tried
a static power check to see if the breaks would hold. 5400 RPM with
only slight creep - tires sliding on grass and not wheels turning as
confirmed by observer.
Breaks installed per latest ZAC drawings - no intensifiers.
Now to attach wings and slow down.

Must be a page missing from my Zenith instructions; haven't been able to
attain 510 mph, especially at 1700 rpm.
Is it because my runway is only 900 feet or am I using wrong fuel?
Or did we confuse May 1st with April 1st?

Stratus is 7 3/8" offset, AutoFlight (from RAM) is 3 1/8" I believe. You'd
have to check w/ZAC about thrust line offset and angle. New engine mount to
fit cowling or new cowling to fit mount? Length from FW to prop hub is
probably different too.
I think both are good engines, plenty of Stratus' flying for many years,
probably the most proven and reliable EA-81 package there is. Simple is
good and cheaper. Maybe not as smooth or as much power as dual port, but no
need for nervousness. I'm perfectly happy flying behind the Stratus, very
proud if it. I would like it to be smoother but I think that's my 2-blade
prop more than the belt, and I'd like more power so I may also go with RAM
or other eventually but not because I'm not confident in the reliability.

the Stratus engine. I share that nervousness, plus some others, with the
Stratus engine. But I've decided to go with a Subaru of some sort, and am
interested in the 100 HP engine from Ram Performance. Zenith tells me the
Ram engine won't fit the Zenith FWF engine mount, but Ron tells me he has
the necessary brackets and that his engine will fit. Besides the fix for
the valve guides that's usually mentioned, Ron's engine uses a gear-driven
reduction unit instead of belt drive, so it looks like an attractive
alternative, in spite of being a few bucks more.

substitute Ron's engine for the Stratus? What about dimensions such as the
distance from the crank to the prop hub? Does the prop turn the opposite
direction on Ron's engine? I already have the Zenith FWF kit (but the prop
hasn't arrived yet), so want all this to be as compatible as possible.

When I first installed the Matco's, I couldn't hold the plane in the
driveway past 3000 rpm or so. After high speed seating, I can hold the
Stratus at WOT (5000 rpm) with minor creep. Big difference. I was
concerned about the single cylinder and almost went to dual, but no need at
all. BTW, I have 6" wheels so that may help too.

What prop are you getting?
I ask this because if you are not going to use the belt drive then be
sure to go with a solid 2 blade prop. If the gear drive does not have
a damping system then you could throw a blade on a ground adjustable.
I would ask Ron some questions to see if this has happened.

Hey Louis,
I am in St. Louis- I n fact, my hangar is at Creve Coeur airport, and I am
building a 801. You can see more than you probably want to know at:
www.liming.org/ch801
and you are welcome to visit. Also, my hangar buddy is building a 601 XL
as well., so you might want to talk to him. I just finished installing the
Dynon EFIS yesterday!
Good luck on the XL,

wadhwa Sidhir, You can build Zenair planes from plans. We built a 701
in 4 years and are working on a 601. We are a Jr High school with 12-15 year

the pieces, creating the assemblies, and putting the airplane together.
The website is here . Click on the Progress page for specific photos of the

Subject: | CH601XL gross weight flight testing |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: xl <xl@prosody.org>
Hello again!
Well, I used 60# Sackrete sandbags for 633Z's gross weight flight tests.
4 * 2.43 = $9.73 -- cheaper than the fuel.
The sandbags were perfect. I needed 240#s. That's 4 sandbags.
I loaded 2 the first time, 3 the second and 4 the third.
With a load at 40 mph hour I found that the wings were very hard to level.
It was chance which way the plane would go at stall.
Anyone else care to comment?? The plane was never uncontrollable, but
I was not able to keep the wings level. Adjust one way and then the
other, etc.... But, no problem - I was > 4000ft.
I did 3 no flap and 3 full flap stalls at three loadings.
That's 18 stalls - and I DO NOT like stalls.
I also did 3+ landings at each load - that was more fun.
(Except the one short landing at full gross weight on grass - a go around).
But I learned a lot!
Then I flew over Monroe, WA to 'relax'. Flight testing is hard work....
I flew > 4 hours with a load and had ~6 gallons left. So I have
convinced myself that 633Z can fly for 4 hours with a >1 hour reserve.
It's easy to say that I can fly for four hours but when the fuel gauge
starts to dip the anxiety begins to increase.
I am building confidence!!
Cheers, Joe
