Here in the UK you have to go through a long series of signed off checks
before you are allowed to run on mogas. This has been strictly enforced
recently due to an accident last year which was purportedly caused by vapour
lock. Details here.
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_avsafety/documents/page/dft_avsafe
ty_026169.hcsp
The main part of this involves fitting a vapour return line from the high
pressure feed to the carbs back to the fuel tank above the liquid level. Try
filling the tank with avgas and see if the problem still occurs.

Changed plug gaps to .020. No help. Let me give a better description of my
problem. Engine starts fine when cool. Runs great, full power climbing as
long as you can stand it. In flight, current weather, 4000 r.p.m.. temps
stabilize around 180 water and oil. If you land and shut down, will not
start at all using any combination of inputs. choke/no choke (enricher).
Throttle /no throttle. cussing/praying. boost pump/no boost. After 30 minute
cool down starts fine.
> If you land and let idle for 10 or so minutes, (I know this is not
good for engine, but has been part of trying to find problem) when you take
off, r.p.m. will drop off around 3500 or 4000 and engine won't make full
power. sometimes will die completely. To simulate this on ground I let idle
until temps got to around 200 oil and 225 water. Advance throttle and engine
stumbles around 3500. Doing mag check during stumble causes no change, so
I'm thinking this rules out ignition.? Boost pump causes slight but not much
smoother running. Shut off engine. Do immediate infrared temperature check
of carb float bowls, get reading of 170 F. Pull bowls of right after
removing top cowl, bowls are both at proper level. Running 92 octane mogas.
Ambient temp lately in the high 70's.

Most of these symptoms sound like vapor lock in a line. That is where it
would be. The high temp in the fuel bowls seems like a significant clue. I
would guess the fuel lines and fuel pump are at least that hot too---- maybe
more.
If you try 100ll and that cures it you can bet vapor lock. Then next
question is how to resolve it. Lots of Ideas there Tom Marson

Plans builders will always be around in large numbers.
The raw materials to build a light aircraft are not
very expensive. For me plans building is the
difference between flying and not flying. Zenith and
others offer great kit products at a fair price. I
have seen the Zenith kits and the quality is
excellent. Having all the pieces on the day you start
is sure to save a lot of time. Combing through
catalogs, doing material take offs, researching and
ordering is a big part of plans building. Its all a
balance between available time, available cash and how
much research you are willing to do.
Brett

Hi Ronnie:
As far as I know, Mike Sinclair does not keep a website. That's why I
posted his photos. I have more photos of his airplane I could post if he
doesn't mind. He's doing a great job on his 701 and very close to being
finished.

Scott (and Ronnie)
I don't have a problem with you posting any of the other pictures. As a matter
of
fact I intend to send a couple more sometime this week (if not tomorrow since I
should have the cowl back on then). It is all together, and painted, just got
some detail work to finish up. Done a WW2 invasion paint scheme complete with
stars and black & white stripes that really looks good with the tail dragger
mode. Although when I played with the paint a bit, I decided that olive drab
wasn't going to cut it. It is "Olive-not-so-drab". Most definitely has a shine.
Think you will be suprised at the look. Hoping for inspection sometime in the
next two weeks. My DAR (was my EAA tech counselor but will be putting on his FAA
hat on the next visit) is currently out of the country, but should be back
shortly. First flight should be around the end of the month. Gotta get my 40
flown off so I can get to Oshkosh this summer. Then I might have time to build
a
web site of my own. Later

Hi listers,
I can't brag about a first flight for a few months yet, but I did start my
Jab 3300 today for the first time in 4 years and it was a great moment for
me. I updated it to newer heads and manifold about a year ago but it hasn't
run except for the factory checkout. Today I got two friends over and
stationed one at the front and the other at the rear with a fire
extinguisher and turned over the 3300 till the oil pressure came up to 40
pounds or so. I turned on the ignition switches and the motor caught almost
immediately. It idled great and sounds wonderful. All temps were normal or
less. Smoothe as silk. I can't get over the joy of hearing it run. All
gauges and engine scanner worked great and the vacuum instruments came
alive. Man what a blast! I can hardly imagine what the first flight will
be like, but this must be a close second. Thanks so much for the help and
encouragement from this group.

Subject: | front wheel bearing failure - CH601XL, stock Matco wheel |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: xl <xl@prosody.org>
Good thing that I had to taxi to 16 at AWO today.
There was a storm coming in from the south so 16 was in use.
It's about a mile taxi to the 'other' end of the field.
When I turned to line up for the runup I heard some chattering.
I was a new sound so I pulled off the taxiway to take a look.
My front wheel was cockeyed in the fork.
Both bearings had failed. The wheel was rolling on the axle
with no bearings. Had I had a shorter taxi run, the bearings
may have failed as I took off or landed. And I likely would
have crashed. The wheel can flop around. I would have lost
directional control and the fork may have collapsed or......
I have 20 hours on 633Z. I plan to contact Matco and Zenith
to discuss the failure. I'll post what I learn. I suppose that
at some point I could have overtightened the bearings. When I
installed the front wheel, I tightened the axle nuts until the
wheel didn't turn and then backed off until it turned freely.
Perhaps that wasn't the thing to do. I'll ask now........
The main bearings are tapered bearings and need to be tightened
enough to set them. The front wheel bearings are not tapered and
the center could be pushed in too far. I have to assume that I
did the damage.....

Greetings all from near Green Bay, Wi
Last month I traveled to Sun n Fun and spent nearly 2 days at the ultralight
flight line (really the sport pilot LSA flightline, 90% of the aircraft were
NOT ultralight, of course!). I spent quite a bit of time filming with a
rented video camera and have produced the best 1 hour video on a DVD from
those 2 days. As a Kolb and Zenith 701owner, I made some special attempts
to
get extra footage of those products.... tho there are many manufacturers
represented here.
If you have attended Sun n Fun or Osh in the past, you know what its like
watching the incredibly short takeoff and landing distances made by some of
these aircraft. Even tho I already fly these myself, it's something else to
watch from the outside and see it done.
I'll leave it at that and just say that if you have an interest, go to
www.CH701.com and on the home page will be a link to the particulars of
getting a hold of this DVD.
Good flying!
