You could take a look at seamless mandrel drawn tubing too, apparently Nascar boys
prefer this over Cr Mo, does'nt crack due to vibration and have some give
in it.
Also is less prone to cracking next to a weld they say.
Dirk.

Grant.
Cold Rolled Electric Welded tube is normally made from
soft steel, usually 1018. 4130 is what they call
aircraft tubing. It is made in a similar manner but
out of a completely different material. Never
substitute the two. Well you could sub 4130 for 1018
but not the other way.

You know guys, that is a pretty good idea, but try this on for size, for
discussion purposes only.
Cut that aluminum tube to fit your sender unit but cut the cap 1-1/2" larger
in diameter, weld the the cap centered on the tube and cut a hole in the top
of the tank so the unit will fit. Use a fly cutter to make a reinforcement ring
for the inside of the tank, install platenuts and flush rivet to the skin.
Using a cork gasket or other shaped gasket sutitable for the tank, proseal the
bottom side of the cap lip.and attach with # 6 or 8 flathead SS screws. When
riveting the reinforcement ring into place be sure to use capped rivets. There
are more steps involved including match driling the cap skin and ring together
before installing attachment hardwear, but I assume you kno how to do that.
Installation would be similar to installing the gas cap assembly.
if you can build it to match the curve of the tanks section, you will have a
removable unit that just looks like and inspection hatch. From there you can
get fancy. Also keep in mind that adding changes that deviate from the plans
will add substantially to the time it will take to get your plane into the air.
The downside to this arrangement is the wiring inside the tank, so don't
forget retaining clips of better yet an aluminum tube to run the wire to the unit.
a heavier walled tube could be threaded and installed in the end of the tank
using a nut and proseal on the inside and a gasket, washer, proseal, and
locknut on the outside, After the wire is in place fill both ends of the tube with
proseal.
Just a suggestion, seek the advise of Zenith before making these or any other
substantial change to your aircraft.
Ted

Domed covers/access doors are supplied with PegaStol wings. You might check with
them.

Greetings listers
After a lot of thought, I have decided to mount the senders on top of the
tank. My reasons for this are twofold; the first one is if it leaks I won't lose
a half of tank of fuel, and secondly, the sensor will be replaceable without
having to tear the wing apart to remove the fuel tank. As for the clearance
problem, I am going to rivet on a slightly domed circular access cover. I have
already modified the sending unit and it just barely will clear but I feel the
domed cover will be a bit of extra insurance. Has anyone run across a domed
cover like this anywhere? Thanks

I also am very interested on any ideas on this. (By the way, the
suggestions floating around modifying the fuel tank itself are good ones,
but unfortunately I'm beyond that point). I've looked everywhere for some
sort of domed cap with a flange so that the cap can be riveted, but so
far I haven't found anything. I tried to make one using a wood block form
and a ball peen hammer, but that didn't work well at all. Looking forward
to hearing some great ideas!

Mike,
I suppose the slightly domed standard inspection cover won't work?

That might work if they're not too big --- where does one get those?

Hi list.
I'm new to the list; and, new to building.
I've purchased an "almost completed" 701.
Here's my problem:
I leveled both fuselages; but, after drilling and clecoing per the plans,
I noticed
on the right side the front is a little low.
I don't know how I got off; but, it is.
Now, the question:
How do I fix it; or, does it need fixing?
I can pull up the front tube to get it level; but then the tube is not
resting on the "L" angle on the side.
Help! I'm not doing anything else until I hear from experienced
builders.
