What about fabricating one with fiberglass? It would be non-structural
right?

That might work if they're not too big --- where does one get those?

Jim,
If you did not drill and cleco the cabin frame to the cabin side I would say
you could move it up and down to make adjustments. Put a level on the rear
fuse at the gussets and make sure it is level, use the same level in the same
orientation on the cabin frame at the fwd wing attachments.Using the level
determine your up or down adjustments. If you did not drill and cleco these you
might be able to raise one side or trim off the other side slightly and lower it.
Make sure the cabin frame front to back (rear wing attach to front attach is
level with the level reference stated in the drawings. I could not get this
level reference perfect as top of the fuselage is curved on top and the side. I
can not tell you if it is critical if the tube rests properly on the cabin
frame extrusion(L), that you can give a quick call to nick or sebastion. Mine do,
but I did have to trim the tubes to get the front -back and side - side level
good. I found my different levels gave slightly different readings, so I stuck
with one level that made all readings consistant. I worked on this for days
thinking out all possibilities of making this work before drilling the first
holes. good luck.

If the down tubes are not the same length could be one
reason, but having the tube contact the L I dont
believe is critical. In flight the cabin "hangs" on
the rivets holding the cabin frame tube to the cabin
side.
If the front wing mount is not level cross ways ( at
right angle to the aircraft centerline) in relation to
the rear wing mount the wing incidence will be
different left to right which is to be avoided.
If you have already drilled the holes through the
cabin side into the down tubes and you find you wont
be able to compensate for the difference safely when
you drill the wing attachments then the only solution
would be to cut out the tube and splice a new one in.
Proven techniques for this procedure are well
documented in aircraft repair manuals.
Good luck.

Mark and any other listers than can provide insight
I would be interested in how these numbers can be worked. Also I have included
the text of an email that I sent to Nick at Zenith asking somewhat the same
question. All replies are appreciated, and hopefully will be something that I
can understand, and be able to explain to the DAR. He's already wanting me to
calculate moment of individual components. This weight and balance stuff is
starting to give me a headache (not to mention the other place that gets
pained).
Mark Sherman wrote:

Nick
Got a bit of a conundrum here, weighed my plane finally and empty
weight comes in at 620. I weigh 190, and with 20 gallons of fuel at 120
lbs. it come to a total of 930. That would mean I can only carry a 30
lb. passenger to stay under the 960 lb. design limit. That allows me to
carry either my dog or my one young niece. Your demonstrator aircraft
was built pre-SP. What is your gross weight shown on your data plate? I
would suspect that when I took a flight with Roger back on June 2nd of
1999 (the day I picked up my kit) that we were considerably heavier than
960. And if it is 1100 how did you get to that number without extensive
structural modification? Even with just the 6 gallons in the header tank
I would only be able to carry someone that weighs 110 lbs or less. I
don't know all that many people that will be able to fit that category.
Seems to be a bit of a shame to have a two seat airplane that can carry
only one. Really don't want to get busted on a ramp check. Did receive a
reply on the builders list that stated:
"My older set of plans have a gross weight of 960#.
You can fly with the old style of 701 at 1100 gross
but you will have to drop your G's down to +3.5 and
-2. You can do the math to get it exact."
Is it legal to engrave 1100 on the data plate? And if so, what kind of
math needs to be done to back this up? Since I intend to be pretty much
of a fair weather flier only when carrying passengers the 1100 number
would work for me if it is do-able. Just need to get past the inspection
point first.
Thanks

Hello, all
The following note was posted on the Aeroelectric list.
I believe many on this list will be interested.
I downloaded the "donation-ware" and played with it on the PC - looks quite interesting.
If you decide to download it, be sure to read Help (easy reading and to the point)
and avoid some
frustration.

Has anyone tried PocketFMS (www.pocketfms.com) ?
It looks like a *great* idea. Provide a very low cost moving map software package
and then have a
community of users that continually update it with local waypoints and airport
info. Just what
the owner-built community needs.
If enough people contributed maybe we could get the developers to create artificial
horizon (GPS
based only) shareware too.

Thanks for the suggestions:
I raised the left tube about 3mm; and, everything leveled up.
Since I have already drilled the cabin side and tubing, couldn't I
"sleeve" a tube on the inside; or for that matter, on the outside; and,
make it rest on the "L"?

Why not ask ZAC if a shim under the tube end is OK,,, and additional rivets
between the existing holes?

Johann,
I have attached two pictures of my flap control and two pictures of drawings
for my flap control. I hope the drawings are readable. Otherwise I can FAX
them to you .
My control also has a stop at 0 degrees which can be folded back for a
cruise setting of negative flaps. You can see it in the pictures but I
haven't a drawing of it.
Also, on my 5/8 inch tubing I have a larger 3/4 tube around the top because
I ran short of the 5/8 inch tubing. Note that the underside of the flap
control tube is notched to fit over the .090 inch steel plate which is
welded to the 5/8 control arm tubing. Yo may have to adjust this to allow
full movement.
All steel plate & tubing is 4130.
I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions let me know

Subject: | Make your own Fuel sender covers |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jim Frisby" <n801za@hotmail.com>
It's easy to make these domed covers, just take a piece of 2" thick wood,
attatch it to a headstock on a wood lathe, use gouge to make a dome just the
size you need, maybe 3/8" deep, sand it very smooth.
Then make a ring of plywood, cut the center a little bigger in diameter than
the dome, cut the outside big enough to clear the 20mm flange you will want
on your cover, plus room for some wood screws.
Then cut out a circle of soft aluminum sheet, 3003, or 2024 T0 work fine, a
fellow builder I told about this used 6061T6 in .025 and said it worked too.
cut the part 20mm or so bigger than the dome, for riveting to the wing.
Center the aluminum circle over the dished out wood, place the ring over it
and screw the ring down hard to clamp the aluminum.
Then just take a rubber hammer and beat the aluminum into the dish. On my
CH801, they came out perfect, I pooled about 1/8" of JB-Weld in the dome as
a dielectric.

Jimmy, what is a little? If you are talking about 1/4" or so, forget it. If more
then you need to fix it best you can. It appears to me that there is a lot
of fudge factor with the 701 as long as you don't get silly.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Jimmy Parker <jwestie1@juno.com>
Hi list.
I'm new to the list; and, new to building.
I've purchased an "almost completed" 701.
Here's my problem:
I leveled both fuselages; but, after drilling and clecoing per the plans,
I noticed
on the right side the front is a little low.
I don't know how I got off; but, it is.
Now, the question:
How do I fix it; or, does it need fixing?
I can pull up the front tube to get it level; but then the tube is not
resting on the "L" angle on the side.
Help! I'm not doing anything else until I hear from experienced
builders.

Well, I am going to actively try to sell my 601 HD/Rotax912. I had mentioned
it a while back on the list, but now it is time to sell as I just do not fly
much anymore.
Built in 1997 and has approx 200 hours TT. No mods. Vfr equipped, garmin gps,
icom panel mount radio.
Asking $20,000.00 neg. or trade for RV (as in travel trailer) of equal
value. I would consider selling parts as well. She flies great, there is no rush
to
sell, I just hate for my plane to sit too long.

would please send them to this address: johann@gi.is or if you want everyone
to receive the pictures, you need to send them to Matt as a photoshare.
Best wishes,
Johann G.
