--> Zenith-List message posted by: "baileys" <baileys@ktis.net>
First posting from a newbie to the list.
Hello, I purchased 701 plans #75552 last week and have been studying them
every spare moment since then. I intend to scratch build since I have a
pretty good collection of sheet meet tools all ready on hand. Engine wise I
have not decided yet. I like the Wayne Williams conversion of the Corvair
and also I am considering a 1915cc VW with a Valley Engineering reduction
drive. Hopefully by the time I get to that point there will be enough
information available to make a choice based upon proven data..
I won't start cutting metal until a couple of current projects are complete.
So in the meantime I'm putting tegether an Excel file of all the materials
needed. It would be nice to have the aluminum and 4130 on hand instead of
having to wait because I ran out of 0.025" 6061-T6 when all a need is three
square feet or something like that..
So any help along these lines or if there is all ready an Excel materials
file in exsistance that you are willing to share it would be appreciated. I
intend to make the file available for download probably on my own web site
since I'm going to try and keep my builder's log and photos online as well.
Thanks in advance,
Bob B. - Missouri USA
BTW - I'm retired with a background as a machinist and I have some
blacksmith and sheet metal experience too. I will mostly just lurk for
while a since I don't plan to answer unless I have "been there - done that"
or I have a question of my own.

The gap at the L would not concern me near as much as
having properly drilled and matched holes for the A5
rivets holding the cabin side to the cage.
An .040 sill connects the tube to the door opening L
which will effectivly hide the 3mm gap.
Depending on what you want it to look like on the
outside will determine the course of action.
Whatever you decide, run it by ZAC.
In the larger picture, the goal is to have the wings
at the same ange of incidence.
FWIW straight planes generally fly straight.

I am using Zinc Chromate from both Tempo and Randolph. Both list Zinc Chromate
on the label as ingredients in the paint along with Alkyd enamel, acetone, Xlene
etc.
The Zinc Chromate is cheap but one must cleanup and/or reduce it with Xlene or
Toulene which are harsh stuff.
On that tip about Sherwin Williams, I called our local Sherwin Willaims Industrial
Coatings store here in San Diego. They deal a lot with Marine users. He
said they don't have Zinc Chromate, but sell Zinc Molybdate which he touted as
better. It is, from the Painting and Coatings web site,:
"Industry Update: Molybdate Corrosion Inhibitors
By Charles Simpson / Moly-White Pigments Group, Cleveland, OH
Calcium zinc phospho-molybdate and micronized molybdate corrosion inhibitors provide
new benchmarks in corrosion-resistant performance."
I haven't used it yet. The person quoted me $67/gallon. Cleans up with mineral
spirits. I read an MSDS page and said it takes hours to dry and you use it
full strength in a sparay gun. Whereas Zinc Chromate drys in minutes and you
cut it in half for spraying.
I'm going to go to the store and find out.
There is always Cobratec VpCI 373 which is water based and goes for $300/quart,
if you can find it.

Welcome and happy building. You will find this list and Zenith most helpful
while you build your 701. I am a semi retired machinist and just got my 801
flying last month. If you are months out on starting you might want to wait to
purchase your materials till the middle east stuff settles down. I know 4130 has
almost tripled in price over the last six months or so and I am betting
aluminum has gone way up too. Hopefully this trend will reverse itself.

Sherwin Williams sells Zinc Chromate for $28 a gallon. Our local store
didn't have it, but ordered a gallon for me and it should be there tomorrow.
The description from Sherwin Williams is as follows:
"A single component corrosion inhibiting primer primarily for use on
aluminum aircraft or airborne equipment surfaces. May be topcoated with
lacquer or enamel. May be used without a topcoat." (Part number E90Y00302,
Sales Number 824-5631)
If you ask your store to order it, maybe they will. This saves shipping on
your part. I was not able to verify the color, so it may clash with my
Aircraft Spruce green.
Happy Building,
Scott Laughlin

Thanks Steve and Ben,
Also thanks to those sending me direct replies.
I have already been looking at the archives and see there is lot of good
information out there.
My first purchase of materials is going to be a while yet. Except, the lady
at KC Airparts told me that the maker of 4130 flat stock has gone bankrupt.
(I don't know if others have heard the same or not.) She told me they don't
have a bit of 4130 flat in stock. I really haven't gotten that far with my
work on the plans to know how much flat stock will be needed. I suppose
something else could be substituted as long an allowence was made for the
difference in relative strength.
Somebody other than myself will have to answer that question.

Thanks Roy,
I'm going to give ZAC a call first thing Monday.
I'm pretty confident after hearing from several listers that
my problem's not that big of a deal.

Larry,
It's out of level about 6mm.
That's the distance I have to raise the cage tube off of the "L"
to get it to level up!
Again, that's IF the rear fuselage is level.
I'm having a harder time making for sure the rear is level.
I'll get it sooner or later.
Thanks for the reply,

Decision is made. I've decided on a 701 STOL with a Suzuki 1.3L 16
valve MPFI engine and a firewall forward package from Raven.
I tried to order my rudder kit on-line today but it seems that
feature is hosed up right now so that'll happen first thing Monday morning.
Off to digest the...digest/archives.
Thanks ain advance,
Rick

Subject: | Shipping crate size |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Steve Sharp <stevensharp25@comcast.net>
I am scheduled to pick up my partners 601 XL kit in late June, I am
currently making plans on building a crate for the back end of the
pick-up, or my trailer, depending on the size I need. I was planning on
putting all of the "long" pieces (leading edges, spars) on the roof rack
(it holds my canoe, it should hold the long pieces too) and the rest in
a crate. Can anyone tell me if this is feasible, and if it is, what
would be the recommended crate size for the remaining piece-parts?
Padding, packaging, protection tips and hints? If all else fails I guess
I'll build a 13 X 3 X 4 crate, strap it to the trailer and drag away.
The total trip is estimated at 650 miles, but hey, it's a chance to take
a demo ride in the 601 and to see the factory (sounds like a good
vacation to me).
Thoughts, ideas, input all welcome.
Thanks,
Steve Sharp

Steve
I did that when I got the bulk of mine. I had them pack and crate mine though.
When I got there they loaded it on my trailer, then gave me a demo ride.
Your spars should be ok securely tied to the roof rack, but I wouldn't put the
leading edge skins up there. The wind will beat them to death. I'd recommend just
putting everything in the crate. Bring lots of packing material, blankets,
newspaper, and tape. A HD crate would be a different size than a XL crate, but
I would guess as long as 1/2 the wingspan X 4 ft wide X 4 ft deep. If you run
out of room, there are lots of things that you could pack in the bed of a pickup,
trunk or backseat.
Be sure to call several days ahead to make sure the parts are ready and inform
them that you would like a demo flight, weather permitting.

Zenith fit my 701 kit including wing spars in my Dodge Grand Caravan mini

(the long Caravan version). Rear seats were removed an spars had about 3
inches to spare.

Well, I tried leaving the oil access door open as soon as the aircraft was
parked. When you open the door, a stream of very hot air flows out. It
started instantly after 30 mins and again after two hours. So the problem
seems to have been solved. It must have been the hot air trapped under the
cowl slowly heating the fuel in the system and causing voids of vapour in
the feed pipes.
Thanks for the suggestion.
