I downloaded the software and loaded on my pocket pc. It is an Asus Razor
w/64 meg ram and 300 Mhz processor. While this seems like a great concept
(user maintained software), it takes over 1/2 hr for the program to load
each time on my pocket pc and I was disappointed with the graphics. Part
of this might be that this product appears to have more support in Europe
than in the US. I downloaded the software for Navgps Basic and Pro
versions for comparison (http://www.flynavgps.com/). It loaded in about a
minute and has some impressive features. Of course it cost $100 for the
basic and $235 for the pro versions(plus map updates). That is just my
experience, would be interested to hear how others have fared.

And there is something else that doesn't cost anywhere near that and will be around
three years (or more) from now when you're finishing up and still have a
few more parts to print. However, it finds almost no favor with the builders
on this list. That would be any of the two-part epoxies that SW, PPG, Randolph
and other make for the trade.
My experience is with the Randolph offering:
Epibond (W-2248) is off white - really helps make inspection or work inside the
a/c easier on the "more mature" eyes - comes in quarts or gallons. About $19
for quart or $55 for gallon.
Rand-O-Plate (B-6433) is dark green, same as above on pricing.
Mix both with equal part(s) of Mixing Liquid (W-2249), same price per quart/gallon
as above.
Thin and clean up with Primer Reducer (G-4201), $20 a gallon. Dries in 30 minutes,
can be ready for final assembly and riveting in same amount of time. Yes,
spray outside, wear mask/filters. Light coat(s), Randolph says the aluminum
substrate should show through slightly. Cheap Harbor Freight touch-up gun sufficed.
I thinned about 30% so ended up with about 2 and a half quarts for less than $45.
Did the Alumiprep cleaning prior to spraying but the Dawn detergent routine
might work equally well. The stuff will not scuff off - you have to aggressively
sand it off should you want to remove. Repeated assembly and disassembly,
as is often done, will not leave you wondering if you need to recoat.
Did you think about how useful the off-white of the Epibond will be through the
future of your a/c when it comes time to do work inside small quarters???
Nothing short of a photon torpedo hit will budge it. Works equally well on your
fiberglass parts; in fact, the paint shop did not require any other primer on
my fiberglass parts prior to finish coats (Concept 200).

Subject: | Visit to Skyshop |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Bill Mileski <mileski@sonalysts.com>
Hi all,
I just wanted to tell briefly about a fun visit to Skyshop, during a drive
back to New England from Florida a little over a week ago. I'm a 701
builder that will hopefully be flying by late summer, and I scheduled a
flight in a Skyshop 701 amphib as a familarization and motivational flight.
Skyshop is located on a very attractive residential air park with two grass
runways, in Stuart. They (Danny and Zaneta) have a large hangar, housing a
701 on amphibious floats, a Dynamic WT-9, and the new Lake Sport
amphib. Skyshop seems to be the primary means to get these Czech-built
aircraft and fast-build kits to the States.
The first surprise was the performance of the 701 amphibian with two
aboard. Grass or water, takeoff roll seemed very short, especially the
takeoff from a pretty small looking lake -- only a couple hundred yards
across at most -- plow for a couple seconds, then plane for a couple
seconds, then lift off. The fuselage attitude was flatter than I expected,
given an impressive rate of climb. The second surprise was the overall
package of the 701 -- electric flaps, new cowl design, a classic float
installation with hydraulic gear, improved air vents, bubble doors, an
airbox with carb heat, plus a constant-speed prop under evaluation. Smooth
as silk, no oil-canning, good door seals, comfortable interior. Rugged and
functional, and really made me look forward to finishing mine, and then
considering the ready to fly amphib floats.
I've been a little out of touch, and hadn't heard about the new Lake Sport
amphibian. The build quality looked great. An inspiring example of how
the Sport Aircraft rule should invigorate GA. I hope there's a Czech
motorglider on the way someday. I posted a picture of Danny preflighting
at http://www.geocities.com/franceshmileski/107-0741_IMG.JPG . Sorry for
just the one pic, I forgot to charge the battery in my digital cam, and
this was it.

On the issue of zinc chromate and acceptable alternatives, I found an
interesting report from Pratt & Whitney on their tests to find an acceptable
substitute for fasteners in their engines. Here is a link to the full
report but the substance is in the last paragraph of the executive summary.

Now the question I have is where can I find a distributor of Randolph

I am using Zinc Chromate from both Tempo and Randolph. Both list Zinc
Chromate on the label as ingredients in the paint along with Alkyd enamel,
acetone, Xlene etc.
The Zinc Chromate is cheap but one must cleanup and/or reduce it with Xlene
or Toulene which are harsh stuff.
On that tip about Sherwin Williams, I called our local Sherwin Willaims
Industrial Coatings store here in San Diego. They deal a lot with Marine
users. He said they don't have Zinc Chromate, but sell Zinc Molybdate which
he touted as better. It is, from the Painting and Coatings web site,:
"Industry Update: Molybdate Corrosion Inhibitors
By Charles Simpson / Moly-White Pigments Group, Cleveland, OH
Calcium zinc phospho-molybdate and micronized molybdate corrosion inhibitors
provide new benchmarks in corrosion-resistant performance."
I haven't used it yet. The person quoted me $67/gallon. Cleans up with
mineral spirits. I read an MSDS page and said it takes hours to dry and you
use it full strength in a sparay gun. Whereas Zinc Chromate drys in minutes
and you cut it in half for spraying.
I'm going to go to the store and find out.
There is always Cobratec VpCI 373 which is water based and goes for
$300/quart, if you can find it.

Hi Everyone,
I use PocketFMS on My Dell Axim X3 (64 Meg, 300 Mhz). It loads like any
other program. I'm a little bit annoyed by the need to accept Use
Agreement every time it starts up. However taking into consideration low
initial cost (about 340 CAD for Axim and 190 CAD for the GPS receiver)
and all futures of the program (moving map, ability to select objects on
the map, airports information with radio frequencies, flight planning,
dashboard display, nearlist airport to go to from your current position
etc) I'm willing to use it for now. On top of it, I can use the Axim
while driving to keep my position on a city map (Toronto) with MS Roads
and Trips).

Chuck
-
I am scheduled to pick up my partners 601 XL kit in late June, I am
currently making plans on building a crate for the back end of the
pick-up, or my trailer, depending on the size I need. I was planning on
putting all of the "long" pieces (leading edges, spars) on the roof rack
(it holds my canoe, it should hold the long pieces too) and the rest in
a crate. Can anyone tell me if this is feasible, and if it is, what
would be the recommended crate size for the remaining piece-parts?
Padding, packaging, protection tips and hints? If all else fails I guess
I'll build a 13 X 3 X 4 crate, strap it to the trailer and drag away.
The total trip is estimated at 650 miles, but hey, it's a chance to take
a demo ride in the 601 and to see the factory (sounds like a good
vacation to me).
Thoughts, ideas, input all welcome.

BTW, yes they do have good prices and service on their tools as I've bought

Hi John,
I've got my shipment in December from Yarde Metals. Excellent service and
prices! Remember, that the price per pound goes lower if you are buying
more. I've got all aluminium for CH701 (close to 400 lb) and paid something
like 2.40 USD per pound (I guess now it must be more since the price of
aluminium on the markets is about twice as much as it used to be due to the
China booming economy). All sheets have proper markings and when you place
and order, they will provide you with the password and client id to access
theirs web site. You will be able to follow you order and even print a mill
certificates for sheets, tubes etc.

Hi to all on the list, Some question for any person who has a 601 HDS and is using
this prop set-up / verses a constant speed and in flight adjustable prop.
My engine is a Rotax 912UL and @ present using a Bolly Optima 3 series ground
adjustable Australian made prop set @ 16Deg pitch @ 605mm radius (recommended
setting ) and the figures are as follows, Max take off RPM 5600 / cruse @ 5200
90Kts @ 500kg . My question is what could I expect in top end speed @ the
same RPM. I am led to believe that I should get at least 10kts for the same fuel
consumption. Any advice from the list would be welcome, as I only use my aircraft
manly in long distance flights, where speed is my main consideration. This
prop with all its advantages seems the way to go with limited Horses under

After my front wheel ball bearings failed at about 20 hours I didn't
like the uncertainty that I felt when the main wheel touched down,
especially in a crosswind, and we've had steady crosswinds at AWO.
I discussed the problem with a Technical Advisor and other builders
at the last Chapter 26 EAA meeting. The concensus was - replace the
ball bearings with tapered roller bearings. An A&P at AWO concurred.
(Matco uses tapered roller bearings with (at least some) 3/4" axles.)
I need a set of bearings that will stand up to the way that I fly :)
I don't know why they failed and that bothers me - they could fail
again.... And when they do the wheel flops over - really bad if your
moving fast.
I took what was left of the old bearings to Bearings, Inc. in Seattle
and ordered a set of tapered roller bearings to fit (~$50). I installed
the new bearings on Friday and have made a number of successful landings
on them. I'll have to repack the bearings at each annual but that's
a minor chore given the peace of mind that they give me. And I already
have to pack the main wheel bearings (tapered rollers) anyway.
