Tapered rollers seem like the best way to go. I think you made a smart
move.

Thanks Jarek, but it wasn't Yarde, but the Yard Store in Kansas. I've emailed
request to Yarde twice in the past month and gotten no answer, and they are much
farther away from me than Kansas. I've found no local supplier, New Orleans
closest that has found 0.016" sheet and they get it out of Miami and want to
hit me up for both shipping and extra service charge. Any one else have any
info on this company?

Hi Norm;
The inflight will increase your cruise speed. You should get at least
another 5 mph. I use an Arplast which is 65" in diameter. If I have it
worked out correctly, your prop is only 48" in diameter. That seems a
bit short.

using this prop set-up / verses a constant speed and in flight adjustable prop.
My engine is a Rotax 912UL and @ present using a Bolly Optima 3 series ground
adjustable Australian made prop set @ 16Deg pitch @ 605mm radius (recommended
setting ) and the figures are as follows, Max take off RPM 5600 / cruse @
5200 90Kts @ 500kg . My question is what could I expect in top end speed @ the
same RPM. I am led to believe that I should get at least 10kts for the same
fuel consumption. Any advice from the list would be welcome, as I only use my
aircraft manly in long distance flights, where speed is my main consideration.
This prop with all its advantages seems the way to go with limited Horses under
the bonnet. Many thanks in advance. Norm Turner. CH601 HDS 335Hrs and love
it. Cheers!!!!

I think the question is: Why would Zenith use anything other than a tapered

I have a WOODCOMP in flight adjustable prop which can get you to the 130 mph
IAS cruise speed if you are willing to cruise at 5500 rpm. I'm not, so I use
5200 to 5300 at full throttle at 5000 ft or more. I use altitude to reduce
manifold pr. and get reasonable EGT's with full throttle. Pulling the
throttle back' particularly at low altitude increases the EGT spread. I use
WOT and 5500 for climb. I overtook and outclimbed a Cessna 150 that took off
ahead of me. Jack Callison is installing an AIRMASTER prop on his 601HDS
with a JABIRAU 3300 just so he can clean my clock.

"16 deg. pitch @ 605mm radius" must be understood as the distance from
center at which the pitch is measured. This is usually at 75% of actual
radius, which will give a diameter of 63"...

The bearings are supplied with the nose wheel from Matco, Zenith has little
to do with it. Apparently Matco seems to think this is an appropriate design
decision. I was not too impressed with the Matco nose wheel that was sent
with my kit, I liked the Grove main wheels much better. Grove also makes a
nose wheel assembly with roller bearings but it cost three times as much as
the Matco unit. If My nose wheel doesn't hold up I might replace it with the
Grove one, despite the cost.

I think my HDS wheels are all ball bearing type, never had a problem yet
(322 hours) But this years inspection will involve strip down of the wheels.

The Yard Store is local to me. I don't really think you will have all that much
luck on .016 through them. They have a lot of aluminum sheet but most of it is
thicker, and they don't keep specific materials in stock. They are mainly a
surplus outlet for the aviation industry here. The manufacturers and machine shops
sell their excess stock there. A lot of the sheet and bar stock are not marked
as to grade or
temper. But if you have a project that about anything will do it is a great place.
They have racks of extrusion of about every shape and size imaginable (mostly
unmarked). They even have one building devoted to nuts, bolts, screws, springs,
rivets, pins, grommets, and I could fill several pages just trying to list
some of the stuff. Outside are piles and stacks of everything else. Dig around
in some of the other
buildings and it is really hard to tell what you will find. Kind of like a very
large junk yard with things sorta organized. In the main building are all the
tools, camping gear, Plexiglas, foam, wire, plastic tubing, etc., etc., etc..
They even have one room devoted to drill bits, reamers, and taps. Keep in mind
that a lot is surplus and a lot is used, But quite a few things in my airplane
came from The Yard.
I've made a lot of trips on lunch break to try and find something that will fill
the bill for what I have been trying to do. The only thing that never seems
to work is trying to find the right bolts. We've got a place called Fastenair
that works for that though. It's a mall for guys, and if you should ever happen
to be in the Wichita area, drop your significant other at one of those other
mall places and go check
it out. I guarantee that you will find something you just can't live without, and
possibly inspiration for another project.

Does anyone have, or could take, a closeup photo of the firewall baffle
strip they could e-mail me? The plans nor the instruction manual really
explain it very well.
Thanks in advance.

Hi All
'm in the process of getting together metal, etc for my XL. I live in Alberta,
just west of Edmonton. I'm looking for a builder who might have some extra metal
kicking around. I realize there are many different sizes of angles, sheeting
that we need. I can access the most common, but there are some that can only
be ordered by the 4x12 sheet. Most of the sheet is never needed and there
seems to be much left over. I would be willing to pay fair price plus shipping.
I just think this would be a lettle more less expensive then buying a whole
sheet or a long length of angle only to use a small piece of it. It would probably
only be worthwhile getting this from a canadian as shipping cross the
border can get expensive. Any thoughts from the group are welcome.

I had the sme problem with the email request form at Yarde Metals. I finally
called them and ordered my aluminum. I am very happy. I got all sheetmetal
for my XL for about $900. If you let them hadle shipping you can get a good
deal. They use Yellow Freight. I think I only paid like $130 to ship to
Nashville Tn from CT. They quoted me slightly more but when it arrived the
bill for shipping was less for some reason. The only thing to note is that
the aluminum does not come with any sort of protective film on it like
others have remarked getting from other sources. But take my advice and
order from Yarde Metals. I seriously doubt you will find it cheaper any
where else and the shipping can be had at a bargain, so no need to insist on
getting it locally.
