Zenith-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Zenith-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Zenith-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Zenith-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Zenith-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.

Your x-ponder antenna should be on the belly of your 701, the GPS antenna
should be on the top side of the 701. The Comm can go anywhere (wing tip ala
Bob Archer antennas)-top or bottom of the aircraft. What's important is a
ground plane for the radiating element to work against. Rule of thumb is to
view the RF signal from its source and to place the antenna where the
antenna can see the signal. Your x-ponder antenna is pinged or interrogated
from ground based ATC radar signals at about 1090 MHZ (frequency). Signals
in this range don't "bend" like lower frequency, larger wave length signals.
So the best placement for the x-ponder antenna for ground based radar
reception and x-mission is the bottom of your 701 with a good ground plane.
TCAS x-ponder reply to signal interrogation is another story. Other aircraft
can ping you (TCAS) so placing an antenna for best RF "seeing" is
problematic. GPS antenna need to see the satellite constellations so top
mounted antennas are needed.

Subject: | Liquidating some stuff |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Steve Sharp <stevensharp25@comcast.net>
I am in the process of liquidating some aircraft related stuff I have
accumulated over the years (okay, I'm spring/summer cleaning). Here is a
list of what I have so far:
Cleveland brakes #199-152, (see the Wicks and Spruce catalogs) 5.00X5,
new, temporary tires have been mounted on the wheels strictly for
building, included are a pair of new but previously installed Air Hawk tires
Master cylinders (2 of them) with reservoirs, I think they are MATCO
MT-MC4 master cylinders (can verify that), new, have been installed,
but no brake fluid was ever installed
NAV/COM 720 channel ICS Plus (see the WAG AERO web site for more
details), 12 & 24v, 720 channels, VOR & ILS (bar graph), flip/flop,
built in intercom, with tray and connectors, the radio has been tested
and does work. The manual is also there.
Fuel pump (2 of them), FACET, 3/8" JIC flair (Wicks part number FP
40108) New, never run, but have been mounted
Fuel pump (2 of them) NAPA/Facet 1/8" NPT, one new, one has been run
maybe 5 hours in auto gas, have been mounted
Check valve (2 of them) 3/8" JIC, Wicks part number CV-3/8
Fuel caps (2 of them) 3" unvented, Wicks part number FC 100-001 still in
the boxes (one has been removed for inspection)
There is probably some other stuff too, I just have to start digging to
find it.
Please E-mail privately and we can discuss the details - all reasonable
offers will be considered. I can supply photos if desired. Here is a
chance to save some money - especially if you are scratch building.

Hi Brett,
I bought the prop directly from Woodcomp in the Tschech Republik. It is just
4 hours by car from here. The prop can't be disassembled - it just fit into
my Audi A4 stationwagon. Price was Euro 2,500.
Best regards

When I first flew mine the battery was behind the right seat and the empty CG was
13.5 And loaded CG was around 15.5, I flew it about 100 hours this way. I noticed
that I had to keep power in to hold the nose up on landing flair if I let
the speed go below 45 mph. So I moved the battery to the tail cone this put
the empty CG at 16 and the loaded between 17 & 18 I thought it landed and handled
better on landing flair better. I flew it another 150 in this configeration
till selling it a 3 weeks ago.

Hello,
I am interested in your 3-blade in-flight adjustable prop. Is it
available in the U.S.? How much does it cost? How many have been sold? Do
you have SAE1 bolt pattern?
Thank you,

Subject: | Quinti constant speed props/701 floats |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Alden Gibbs" <duba@gate.net>
Thought I would jump in with this link..( www.skyshops.org/quinti.htm
}We are currently using Quinti props with great success with improved
performance numbers. These props are built tough unlike some of the
other constant speeds. The controller on Quinti is extremely advanced,
not only monitoring RPM but manifold pressure at the same time. This
gives you a truly one lever control (throttle only) for your entire
flight. With preset take off climb and cruise settings (owner
adjustable) this is a "set and forget" operation. The hubs utilize Warp
Drive blades which have held up well even on our float planes.
Just posted two videos of Super CH701 on floats. If you have time or
fast connection (http://www.skyshops.org/701%20SUPER%20FLOATS.htm)

Subject: | COPA Alert, GPS Jamming |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dave & Darlene" <dnimigon@telusplanet.net>
Just to let the members know I received this message from RAA regarding an alert
for GPS users in Quebec & Ontarion in June.
Forwarded from Kevin Psutka of COPA:
Electronic Warfare Effects Flight Safety - Beware in Ontario and Quebec in June!
While preparing for a trip from Ottawa recently, COPA staff member Adam Hunt noticed
the following NOTAM in the Flight Information Region section of the NOTAMs:
040305 CZUL MONTREAL FIR
CZUL GPS JAMMING EXERCISES MAY RESULT IN INTERMITTENT LOSS OF GPS
SIGNALS IN VICINITY OF 4539.8N 7736.2W (YXI VOR) FROM 350 RADIAL
CLOCKWISE TO 090 RADIAL. AFFECTED AREA EXTENDS TO 100 NM BELOW
3000 FT MSL, AND UP TO 250 NM ABOVE 3000 FT MSL. GPS APCH NOT
AUTH AT PEMBROKE (CYTA), MANIWAKI (CYMW) AND MONT-LAURIER (CSD4)
DURING EXERCISE PERIODS 1400-1900 DAILY 0406091400/0406111900
AND 1400-1900 DAILY
0406141400 TIL 0406151900
Given the proximity of the jamming to some of the busiest flying areas in Canada
and the potential for the directional jamming to go beyond the intended direction,
COPA President Kevin Psutka contacted key individuals at the Department
of National Defence (DND), Transport Canada and NAV CANADA and also made our
sister organization, AOPA US, aware of our concerns.
In a strongly worded message to the agencies, COPA emphasized that there is a flight
safety trap being created by this exercise, most notably that they intend
to proceed with the exercise even if the weather is IFR, when potentially someone
will use GPS as the primary means of navigation. We pointed out the FIR
NOTAMs are more obscure and sometimes difficult to decipher. It is very likely
that, despite the length of time that the NOTAM will have been in effect by the
time the jamming exercise takes place, there will be a significant number of
pilots in Canada using GPS during the period that the jamming will occur who
will not be aware that jamming is occurring...
.From the location information in the NOTAM, it is not clear where the jamming
will be coming from, so DND was contacted for more information. It will in fact
come from Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, north-west of Ottawa.
As of the date of this article, discussions with the three agencies did not convince
them to change their plans. So, please be aware of the jamming that will
occur on 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15 June from 1400Z to 1900Z. Do not conduct GPS approaches
at the three airports and we strongly recommend alternate means of navigation
within 250nm of the Killaloe VOR (YXI) on those days.

Subject: | Attention successful tank welders... |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bima, Martin" <mbima@hydro.mb.ca>
I have some welding flux, a video and a handbook, so that I could learn
to weld some aluminum fuel tanks together. After a lot of practice, it
is slowly coming together.
Since the skins of the tanks are made of .025 thick 6061-T6 as per
plans, and the aluminum fuel fittings are very large (.100 to .120
thick) in comparison to the skin, how to best make them stick together?
Question - Should I braze the fittings into the skin? Or select a
thicker re-enforcing-patch (.060) and weld the fitting to the re-patch,
and then braze the re-patch to the skin? Or weld the re-patch to the
skin?
Thanks for your help.

Martin,
I'd recommend you use a thicker material, nearer .040 to.050 if you want an
easier time
making a tank. Besides, it will hold up better because the joint can be
heavier as well.
The third option in your case would be the easiest. Weld the fitting to a
patch to assure
that you don't burn up the skin in the effort. I used a piece of aluminum
angle to pre-patch
the drain fitting before welding the lighter material into the wing tanks.
If you need further advice, the process is described better in a journal and
pictures at
my web site. www.macsmachine.com.
Good luck,
Larry McFarland - 601HDS
