Try a kitchen supplies store, they use small gas struts for holding open cupboard
doors.

Subject: | Stratus Alternator - Backup Ignition - Reverse Throttle |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Andrew SanClemente <ansancle@townisp.com>
Does anyone have a part number to replace the alternator that comes
on the stratus motor? I would like to find the same one so the wiring
and mounting brackets all line up. On my alternator it says "NIP P/N
14684" but I can't get any hits on that when searching.
Also, my backup ignition is junk (never worked), looking for options
to replace that, again - reusing mount points and wiring most
desirable. So if anyone has part numbers etc. it would be greatly
appreciated!
Last - My throttles on the Bing Carbs are setup in such a manner that
when the arms are deflected fully down its at idle, full up is full throttle.
This results in having to pull out for full power and push in for idle, opposite
of what it should be. My springs pull to idle, not full power as I guess was intended
by Zenith. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Andrew

Larry Martin.
I just finished the doors on my 701. Per plans,
probably lighter than the bubble doors. I used the
gas struts available at Aircraft Spruce. They only
offer one size, I think it says they are for an RV.
They have 45# of force and a short stroke, about three
inches or so I think. Because of the short stroke the
door has a lot of leverage on the strut so you need
the 45# to lift the door. If you used one from a car
trunk that had a twelve inch stroke or so, you
wouldn't need so much pressure, because you would be
lifting the door much farther out from the fuselage.
If you would like a picture of mine contact me off
list and I will be happy to send you copy's.

I am VERY PROUD to report to the group that last evening after a long and
much anticipated wait, B.J. Schwaller's Plans built, VW powered 701 made
her maiden flight.
No surprises with the engine, redrive or plane.
A few may remember B.J.'s plane is the first 701 that is powered by a
Valley Engineering redrive and 1915 VW Engine combo.
http://www.culverprops.com/
Take off roll and acceleration were outstanding as was as expected,
(considerablely less than 200 ft.) Climb was also outstanding even with
the test pilot trying to keep airspeed above 50 mph on climb out.
No bad habits reported and the first 8 tenths of an hour were a non event.
The test pilot fell in love with the plane.
Flying stall at altitude was reported at 35 mph
GPS verified, NO wind, cruise 65 mph at 3000 rpm, which is where the
test pilot said the plane felt like it wanted to fly.
73 mph at 32-3300 rpm,
89 mph at 4200 rpm. MAX Full throttle
CONGRADULATIONS B.J.
A little more information about B.J. and his plane and his contact
information is pasted below from his builder page on the Zenith site.
Where you can see pictures of his plane and engine. Pictures are also on
the Valley Eng site

My solution to the problem looks pretty (honestly!), but was rather a lot
of work. I made a fibreglass domed cover about 5 inches in diameter with
a neoprene gasket held on by 8 #4 little sheet metals screws. I used a
chemistry watch glass as a former, but many other things would do. The
reason for the fibreglass was, the turtledeck skin is sufficiently curved
such that a flat cover simply won't fit. To get the right curve, I put a
sheet of sandpaper face up on the turtle deck and sanded the fibreglass to
fit BEFORE I cut the circular 3-inch hole (approximately) in the metal
skin. This was necessary because I had to get at the calibration screws
on the top of the sender after the assembly was complete. Also, being a
firm believer in Sod's Law, I'm betting I have to get at the
wires/connections/calibration screws on top of the sender at some point in
the future.

Hi list members.
I was just bolting the rotax 912 engine to my engine mount and was wondering
about the bolts which attatch the engine to the mounts.
To bolt the steel E1-1X to the engine, an M10 x1.25x20 8mm key 12,9 hardened
bolts are used. But the steel bracket is bolted on the dynafocal bracket
E2-1X
with an AN4-10A bolt. Hardned 8.8? I am no engineer, but somehow this seems
to be a much weeker attatchment than all the others. So this would be the
weekest link?
Please correct me if I am wrong here. Am I missing something here? Is this
strong enough for the force of Rotax 912 80 hp shaking?
Just wondering if anyone has thought about this.
Best regards,

I am about to order the options for my kit which is to be delivered next month.
Just wondering if anyone has researched the pros and cons and the availability
of alternative lighting. LED vs Normal nav/strobe lighting. Also has anyone
had much luck converting auto HID lighting for a landing/taxi light. I have
seen some aviation specific kits for about $400 per light. I really like the
idea of HID w/ more light and less heat and the ability to just leave it on
all the time, but $800+ for taxi and ldg lights ouch.

Completed my spring loaded steering rods today. Pictures were sent to the pictures@matronics.com and to www.ch701.com.
This setup allows several adjustments that the solid rods do not. The main reason
I am using it is because it allows you to push rudder without the front wheel
turning until it rolls. This depends on how much tension you put on the springs.
Take a look and if there are any questions, I will try to answer them.
Them is the same setup I used on my RAF 2000 gyroplanes and it worked real fine
then. Of course I haven't flown it on a 701 yet. Larry N1345L

Greetings listers
I bought the landing lite/taxi lite kit from Zenith. But, if I was doing it
again, I would build it from the plans. There is not much to it. Do not know
about the halides but boy ! that is expensive. As for the LED position lites it
seems plausible and a lot less amp drain, which is a concern to me with the
Jab 3300 20 amp alternator. As for the strobes from ZAC, they say to run them
with the lamps disconnected if they have not been used for a while, to charge up
the capacitor. How impractical! Not to mention skimping on the power supply
components ratings and design. I would never would have bought them if I had
known that. The other option given is to charge them at a suggested reduced
voltage of three volts for 10 to 15 minutes. That seems the way to go, using a
d.p.d.t.c.o. switch with one side turning on a 3 volt power supply to the strobes
power supply and the other side of the switch sending (the strobes power
supply)12 volts for operation. Can anybody come up with a schematic for the power
supply? Ohms law is saying to me it would only have to be one quarter of the
amps to charge them then it would be to operate them I think...

I would like to do this on my CH-640 also. Seems silly to me to use solid
rods. I looked at the links you posted but could not find anything to do
with your spring loaded steering rods. I'd appreciate any info you could
send to me about them. I looked all over and could not find any to purchase
Guess I was not looking in the correct place.

2.6 CELL_PHONE_BOOST BODY: Talks about cell-phone signal improvement
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry McFarland" <larrymc@qconline.com>
Hi guys,
Had to share this Preflight experience
Kelly Meiste offered an hour in his 601HD to do flight familiarization and proficiency
this afternoon so I drove 45 minutes toWhiteside SQI arriving near 4:00
p.m. We initially talked thru his 80 hours of 601 experiences and first flights.
Kelly did a preflight exam and then we taxied out to runway 7, accelerated
rapidly, lifted off and flew south while Kelly explained the 601s manners.
My first impression was that the acceleration and immediate climb out with two
persons was astounding. The Subaru loves to run above 4000 and it sounds much
like a well-oiled sewing machine, so sweet! I made a few turns and gained a
feel for the 601 as we returned to SQI. The view from a 601 has no peers unless
you're a bird and this sunny afternoon was an unlimited horizon. Kelly communicated
and broadcast from a dash-mounted Icom AC22 and intercom splitter to headsets.
The reception was excellent for aircraft as distant as Davenport 50 miles
away. I was allowed to do the next 5 or 6 touch and goes. My initial approach
amounted to a steep diving glide to a flare and a solid touch down. But after
some patient coaching, I was able to decend while holding 90 at 2500 rpm
and then round out a flare that resulted in a reasonably good touchdown. I found
that there is enough elevator and rudder authority to land crosswind with a
slight low wing and keep the nose wheel off a bit with practice. The plane is
much, much more fun to fly than anything I've had the pleasure to be in. The
opportunity to fly another's airplane is definitely worth it. It resolves a lot
of questions about glide angle, approach, flare, touch down and rollout. This
experience will have made my first flight a much safer one and my wife and
I are very thankful to Kelly Meiste for that. Most fun I've had in a long time.
Thanks again Kelly!
