Well I finally got C-FZOF back in the air yesterday evening.. This is
A CH601 that I purchased with 12 hrs in the log. Two years and a lot of work
later I have made the first flight. Last night was very still although the vis
was not the best. Found it extremely sensitive in pitch and rather lackadaisicle
in roll however we did manage a circuit without any major incidents. I have
done better landings and also worse, so all in all I guess it was a success.
This is a taildragger that was involved in a ground loop wich resulted in damage
to the left undercarraige. The fork and gear box had to be replaced. Also
was rerigged with some slight toe out wich gives improved ground handling.

"That is because as it is stretched out mine begins to form a curved line."
Just a comment on the above statement....
You should never rely on the rivet fan to produce a straight line. It's
only function is to provide the space between the rivets or "pitch."
It's best to mark or establish your rivet location or "edge distance" at two
locations (between two significant end holes), then connect with a straight
line (for example along the edge). With a straight line in place, then use
the fan to mark the pitch. If there is a slight curvature, just project the
'pitch" marks down or up to the straight line.
In the case of long runs, usually the runs are divided up between
significant end holes like wing ribs or fuselage stiffeners. I drill the
end holes first, then make a line between them that is straight and at the
correct edge distance. You end up with several shorter runs instead of one,
long run of rivets. The results are aesthetically pleasing and close to
ideal for edge spacing.
Sometimes I find that an end hole (significant end hole) is a little farther
or closer to the edge than I like (because it may have been drilled from the
other side), so I make my next straight line so it slowly corrects for this
between this hole and the next significant hole which hopefully is a little
closer to ideal. If both ends need correction, I adjust the entire line,
mark the pitch and drill.
It's all a matter of personal preference, but for me, the rivet fan is one
of the most valuable tools for saving time and improving quality. I'm
building from plans-only, so I don't have "pre-drilled" holes to work with.
I was introduced to the rivet fan at the ZAC rudder building school where I
learned many good tricks. If anyone has specific questions on the rivet fan
usage or other tips, I'd be happy to email you off-line. I'll also welcome
your advice and tips if you want to email me.
Happy Building,
Scott Laughlin

Now that I'm at least close enough to begin fantasizing about first flight, does
anyone know of any place in Canada where one can get formal instruction in a

Hi Phil:
You did pay "interest" in the sense that you paid extra for the individual
kits. There is currently a savings of $545 for the entire 701 kit. This is
exactly like a financing fee.
It is a hard finance problem to convert this fixed financing fee to an
appropriate interest rate -- the longer you space out your purchases, the
lower the apparent interest rate since the fee is fixed. However, if you
buy the kits over a two year period, I will guess that this will be like a
5% loan.
Not included in the above is the risk that the prices will go up.
Aluminum has been increasing in cost and I am certain that Zenith is facing
some cost pressure. I don't think they have raised the 701 price in two
years; it may be time to expect an increase.

I "financed" my kit by buying partial kits, and spacing them out. When I
had the money, I bought a kit! Interest free!

A tip for using the rivet fan: Rather than stretch out the fan to the point where
the holes begin to trace a curve, mark every other hole in two colors. I
marked the alternate holes of mine with red and blue markers. When planning my
hole spacings that are larger than 20mm, I set the fan so that every other hole
makes the desired distance, and mark through the correct color. For long
runs, set them up in two or more equal segments.
Using this method, I can drill the ends of the run on the rivet line, use a silver
cleco to anchor the fan ends, drill and anchor a center hole, and just drill
#40 right through the fan holes. They're holding up fine. The fan is one
of the most useful tools on my hooks.

Where do you live? Has anything been removed from the engine? How would
you suggest transporting it to East Central Illinois? I use the same
engine in my Zodiac.

Scott . . . First lay out the centerline of the rivets (usually 10 mm in from the
edge) and then use the rivet fan for spacing along that line which is straight.

Hello David,
I am not sure if you got my mail or not. We have been having some trouble
with the internet up here.
I would like to buy the radiator you are selling. Is it the 995-697 radiator
for the 912 engine that is recommended for my 701 under cowling?
Best regards,

I have been flying my zodiac 601 HDS now for about a year here in Arizona
and have found that my Rotax 912 80 Hp isn't powerful enough to easily
handle 115 degree heat nor the wind shears that are here. Therefore I'm
upgrading to a 912S and now have my 912UL with 92 hours on it for sale.
It's in excellent condition and I'm asking $8500. This includes the
ignition system, carbs, starter, and oil tank. I also have some other items
that I'm not using: Zenith factory cowling for the 601 HDS $375, Zenith
radiator, (the one that was to go under the cowling) $85, and also have a
GSC prop (from Zenith) 68inch with spinner ground adjustable TT 36 hrs.
$375. And a Avcomm AC-747 headset, new still in box, $175 --Let me know
if interested Dave

There is a rumor that ZAC will be redesigning another plane besides the 601 XL
that will have "maximum performance and capability possible under the new proposed
FAA category". This is said to be announced as soon as the new Sport Pilot
rules are finalized.
I'm really anxious to start my 701 but would be greatly disappointed if a newer
1232 pound version is announced. Any ideas as to what the new one might be and
any differences from the current 701? It would be nice if the empennage were
the same and I could get started.

I too was concerned about uneven rivet pitch. I decided I needed fan but
did not have one. But I was able to produce a variable spacing template
for under 1 dollar. I have found it very useful and it handles curved
surfaces easily too.
I got some round, white, elastic cord from Wal Mart?s fabric section.
After stretching the cord somewhat, I made Sharpie marks at 40 mm spacing.
Typical usage:
1. Clamp the cord with a mark at one reference point.
2. With one hand, hold the appropriate mark at the other reference point
(the mark that gives the spacing closest to but does not exceeding 40 mm).
3. With the free hand, tick all the intermediate marks.
For the elevator skin, I could not get a clamping point. I finally
realized that I could duct tape the cord so a mark was at the start of my
meter stick. Then I could just lay down the stick with its start is at the
first reference point.

all waiting for it to fail which you know it will. Jack
