Martin,
Some time ago I welded 2 fuses, in tig welding, had a bit of a time to really do
a proper job around some tight corners.
Had the same problem with filler material not melting quick enough, before overheating
the tube.
I came up with the idea of winding 3 strands of .024 mig wire, using a fitting
and an electric drill. Do the wind quite tight, then cut in desired length.
This way the rod melts quicker, for it is now 3 thin strands, but you still have
the same volume of filler material.
I used ER 70 S6.
This way you get a much more controlable weld, without overcooking the base metal.
Can send some pics if you want.
Dirk.

A questions for all you gas welders out there...
Can I use MIG welding wire (copper coated I think???) for gas welding
the 4130 parts?
The wire is .035 dia AWS certified ER70 S-6

I am considering a CH701 and would like to see one first hand. The factory
and Oshkosh will be hard to get to this summer. Any help would be
appreciated.

Subject: | ZAC 601 firewall package question |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Trevor Page <webmaster@upac.ca>
Greetings listers!
I've been doing a lot of research lately having recently purchased a
90% completed 601HD airframe (boy am I excited!). I've also purchased
an overhauled 912UL pulled from a certifed Katana. Now, my question is,
how good is the ZAC firewall-forward package for the 601? Is it fairly
complete?
I have all the drawings for the plane and I don't mind building the odd
part from scratch (except for the engine mount, oy!). What I'd like to
know is if I can buy the engine mount, cowling and some of the other
stuff from ZAC and build some of the other simpler parts to save some
money. Perhaps some of you might have a firewall kit you're not going
to use? ;)
One more thing, how much value is there in buying an interior package
instead of making my own seats/upholstery? Anyone have a website with
pictures of such that I can have a look at?
Thanks!

You might consider doing your seats and upholstery and saving a little
cash as it's not such a difficult task. On my website, the seat page,
you'll
see a process described in pictures for making the seats that, after
upholstery
still cost about $500. But that's considerably less than the commercial
variety.

Subject: | Stratus Magnetic Pickup - Backup Ignition |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Andrew SanClemente <ansancle@townisp.com>
I believe that my magnetic pickup for the stratus backup ignition
isn't working. I want to confirm that I have tested it properly
though.
I used an autoranging digital voltmeter. I plugged black to black and
red to red and received 0.0 on the readout when testing for Volts AC
or DC (while cranking). I also tried testing for Milli-amps AC or DC
and got nothing (while cranking). Did I test this properly?
Since I assume my pickup is junk do I need to get a new one from
stratus or is there another I can use from an auto store?
Thanks
Andrew

I would call Stratus and ask him how he tests them.
Its either the pick up or the ignitor box, trouble is how to distinguish
between the two?
My system died as well but I have no clue which part died...I pulled it out
anyway so those parts are available if they are of use to you.

Hi Andrew,
A voltmeter/ampmeter (multimeter) will not be able to measure the spikes
that are produced from the ignition (if it was working) You might be
able to see some fluctions if the engine was running at a fairly decent
RPM. To see pulses or spikes (such as timing pulses) it is best if you
use a scope.

Burke,
Bobby Clarke at the FBO at RIC, Richmond, Virginia, has a 701 that about complete
except for hanging the engine. You can call him at 804-222-7211 and leave a
message....he's hard to track down sometimes. Sure he would be glad to show you
his plane if you come to the Richmond area.

Greetings listers,
What is the preferred hardware to
secure the Ray Allen servo to the aileron? It's temped in with non A/N screws
because none came in the kit(?) and the plans don't state anything at all(?).
In the good news department, ZAC sent me top skins instead of the bottom ones
needed.
Then again could it just rivet on?
This idea just because you have to drill out the access cover anyway.
Any descriptors, P/Ns for the A/N hardware much appreciated.
Thanks

I riveted mine, that way there's no screws to come loose.

I am at the point where I am running brake lines. I will also be running electrical
to the wheel pants for landing lights.
I was wondering if it would affect the landing gear integrity if I drilled and
tapped small holes (two or three) in the aft edge of the landing gear for attaching
small Adel clamps to hold my lines and wires. Or any other ideas for attaching
them would be appreciated.

Larry, while I'm not building my 601 yet (soon) I have come across a
website that showed a neat bracket attached to the trailing bolts on
the landing gear to pass the lines through.
If I can find the image I'll post a link just as soon as I can find it.
I like it so much I plan on doing the same for mine

I thought about that on my 801 and was concerned that a hole in structure of
the gear might cause an area for a stress riser to form. These gear legs
really take a beating for sure..
