Ok, I guess I've been lurking for long enough, time to introduce my self.
My name is Greg Lamoree and I've been lurking on this site for the last several
months.
I'm building a 601 XL, completed the rudder and took delivery of the 900lb killer
box a couple of weeks ago. I've now started on the horizontal stabalizer.
I want to thank everyone on the list for their help so far (even though you didn't
know you were helping). By reading this forum I've been able to learn alot!
Recent conversations about rivet edge distance and a conversation a while back
about the Dual vs Y stick, were of particular interest and help.
I also wanted to complement Gig on a very nice web site.
I hope that in the future I can be of help as much as everyone here has helped
me so far.
Thanks again!

Welcome Greg,
Hope to hear from you as you progress. This group has a good history
in answering both my "duh" questions to the most difficult. Nothing is
obvious
to the person asking, so look over the archives and don't be reluctant to
ask.
Good luck,

Cleone,
What is the module you refer to?

I found that it would not run on one of the modules. It had 257

Subject: | Working with steel |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Scott Laughlin" <cookwithgas@hotmail.com>
Hi Carlos:
Last summer I built an 8' sheet brake. I had to cut some 1/2" thick x 6"
wide steel. I managed to make one cut with a 12" metal cutting blade on my
miter saw, but it was a long process. I took the rest of the parts to a fab
shop where they promptly cut through it with their large band saw. You
should do this. Bring it somewhere and have them cut it and give them a
tip. If you go at lunch, maybe the guys in the shop will do it for you for
a few dollars or for some lunch.
Intricate cuts will have to be torch cut, plasma cut, milled or some other
method. I would also farm this out if you don't have a torch or a band saw.
Anything over about 1/8" in steel becomes a real problem. I have a band saw
that will do thin steel. For rough cuts, I also have a sawzall (a large,
reciprocating saw) that will cut through thicker material, but it isn't
pretty. I won't use the miter saw again because it is hard on it.
Good luck with your project.
Scott Laughlin

Subject: | Backup Stratus Ignition |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Andrew SanClemente <duck@townisp.com>
Yes,
Im still fighting with this so I have more questions for the group.
Unfortunately Im still not getting any spark from my backup ignition
even though I just received and tried a new magnetic pickup from
stratus. I know my coils are good and I know I have power going to
the Ignition box. I want to double-check that I have this wired
properly.
Ignition Box Red to Coil Positive - Coil Positive to 12V+
Ignition Box Black to Coil Negative
Pickup plugged into Box, only goes one way.
Is there anything wrong with this? Ive tested the backup ignition
with both coils with no luck (Ive run the engine off both coils using
the distributor so I know they are both good). This is my final
"engine problem" before I can move on, thanks to all and I apologize
for the steady stream of ignition related questions.
Thanks
Andy

Can someone tell me where it find the edging for the lip/sunguard over the instrument
panel? Don't think it makes a difference, but it is for a 701. I believe
it's like a door edging for a car, but I want something bigger. Thanks, Larry

Joe - Glad you were able to land saftely then make it home.
Another CO monitor to consider is the CO Experts Model 2004 from AeroMedix.com. See http://www.aeromedix.com/index.php?_siteid=aeromedix&action=sku&sku=coex&_sessid=a1646f3199a5a7969d2a16bdeda1d7de This url has additional links with more information about CO detectors.
( I have one of these in N601RT. It is VERY sensitive. My hangar typically has
~10ppm. I wish it was smaller. I'm not affiliated with the company, etc....)

Yeah; I replaced one but still have a mag drop of 300 rpm when I do the mag inspection.
I've replaced all the automotive style connectors in the ground wires
but have not been able to find why I have the mag drop. In desperation, just
before I flew from Corona CA to OSH, I took off and learned I could still climb
on the bad side. I've been flying ever since! Someday, maybe I'll let a
trained Rotax guy figure it out. 601 HDS 640 hours.

I don't know if this would interest you but. . .Tony bingelis has an
iteresting description in his book "Sport Plane Construction Techniques" of
how to make that instrument panel "lip'" or glareshield. He uses a piece of
PVC pipe cut and split and covered with thin foam and vynil (working from
memory here). Thought it might give you an idea.

California Power Systems for about half price and then found the trouble in
the trigger coil assembly.

Hello, Scott
The more I read your (and others) note, the more I realize I underestimated this
little project.
I did cut 1/8" steel to make fluting pliers, and that wasn't too bad.
However, one quarter inch is another story altogether.
I guess I'll just pratice a little more with the sledge hammer before tackling
the spar.
Best regards, and thanks for the input

Subject: | Engine testing, Stratus Subaru |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Bryan Martin <bryanmmartin@comcast.net>
I took a couple of weeks off recently to finish the construction of my
601XL. I=B9ve got it all assembled now and just about ready for inspection.
When I started testing the engine, I discovered that the primary ignition
system wouldn=B9t work. I isolated the problem to the units inside the
distributor, this is the Nippon Denso pickup and control module. I had a
heck of a time finding a replacement, the most of the auto parts stores said
they couldn=B9t get it any more. I checked the local junkyards with no luck. I
started searching on-line and finally found two part numbers by referencing
a 1982 Subaru 1800 standard engine =B3module and pick-up=B2 or =B3pick-up/stator=B2
(searching for an =B3ignition control module=B2 failed to find the right part).
The parts listed were Borg/Warner ME579 and Beck/Arnley 100258. The picture
of the Borg/Warner part looked exactly like the unit from my engine but I
found out that it was no longer available. There was no picture of the
Beck/Arnley unit but I ordered one and it worked. If anybody is interested,
I found these parts at partsamerica.com (Action Auto) and autoparts.com.
I have the Warp drive 73=B2 three blade prop. Mykal recommended 17 1/2 degrees
of pitch and 5000 RPM on take-off. With 17 degrees, I could only get 4500
RPM static. When I re-pitch the prop for 15 degrees I could still only get
4600 static. Re-reading Mykal=B9s message I realize he didn=B9t say static RPM
but said 5000 on take-off. For those using the Subaru with this prop, does
4500 to 4600 static RPM sound right or should I have 5000 static?
I=B9m also wondering how heavy your airplanes were with this engine. Zenith
claims an empty weight under 700 pounds with the Jabiru or Rotax with
minimal panel. My preliminary weight was around 820. I expected it to be on
the heavy side with the heavier engine, full panel and interior, but I was
surprised at the numbers I=B9m getting.
I=B9m getting very close to launching this sucker, just have a bunch of
paperwork to finish and a little more testing.

First flights today. About a dozen landings on two different grass strips, one
paved runway, and then my own little short narrow grass strip. The only really
wild off runway excursion was off the paved strip, and it wasn't too bad. Lots
of room between the two lights this time. Gotta get used to this rudder, doesn't
quite have the effectiveness at the real low speeds of a 701 full flare 3 point
touchdown. Will definitely have to learn to stay ahead of it, and not sure what
the cross wind limits are, but probably not much. The ones I had today were
probably about 5-6 kts. Most runways I will be able to land into the wind
anyway, as short as this thing stops. Quite a bit different from the Super
Decathalon I've been flying for the past week. Finesse will come. Had the doors
off so top speed in level flight only got to around 80. Will check against the
gps on one of the next flights though. Start the flare about 40 and it sits down
nice and soft. Will play with slips again when I put the doors back on. Like
sitting in a wind tunnel with em off. Just too darn hot to sit in that green
house today. Only 38.3 hours to go before I can break my 25 mile limit. Lookout
Oshkosh, here I come!

I like the Tony Bingelis design. It was easy to make. Rubber tubing
(3/4" or so as I recall), some foam, some aluminum, and some cover
material. It will help save your head if you ever hit the panel hard.

Subject: | First-time Zodiac 601 builder questions? |
pts rule name description
---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Trevor Page <webmaster@upac.ca>
Hi folks, I just took delivery of a 601 project that the previous owner
decided to not finish (his loss, my gain!)
Anyhow, a few things I wanted to ask the list:
1. The kit doesn't have any seat belts. I was thinking of going to an
auto wreckers and picking up something out of a small car to use. My
questions is, has anyone else done this? The baggage compartment floor
is complete but clecoed and I thought now is the time to cut a slot in
the floor to pass the ratchet anchor through it and bolt it to the
fuselage bulkhead. Any thoughts on this? Advisable? While on the
subject of wreckers, correct me if I'm wrong but it looks as if the
forward opening canopy of the XL (I need to build a canopy for mine)
latch looks suspiciously like a car door catch. If this is the case
might as well pick that up too?
2. For some reason the the small bolts around the main landing gear on
either side don't have the nuts put on. How difficult is it to remove
the plate to install those? Do I have to drop the landing gear out to
do this? The bungies are huge and in the way big time.
3. Has anyone made an engine mount for the 912 from scratch using the
drawings? I have a couple of friends who are master welders and I was
thinking of getting them to make it up.
4. One wing does not have the leading edge skin installed yet. Perfect
time to install a landing light. Any drawings out there for making a
bracket?
I'll have more questions soon but these I saw right away and wanted to
fix them before I really start going.

Trevor, the only problem you will face is that your inspector ( Jamie
Alexander) will want to see that your seatbelt will release while under
weight, as in an inverted situation. You will have to prove this to him
if you use an automotive belt.
While on the
subject of wreckers, correct me if I'm wrong but it looks as if the

You will find the latch mech from the plans is available at Spa-Naur on
Victoria st in Kitchener. Use the same part #.

Tom Mills has made many of those mounts; you may wish to talk to him
directly.
4. One wing does not have the leading edge skin installed yet. Perfect

Yup, drop up for a visit and I can set you up.
