Hello, all
I'm about ready to start building the wing (lead edge) tanks (601-HD).
I'll be putting it together the RV way, i.e., with rivets (cherry rivets, probably).
I thought some of you folks that have already been there might be able to share
some information.
I'm starting to compile a list of the hardware I need to order (filler cap, tubes,
valves, etc.),
and thought somebody might already have done that...
Anybody willing to share it? It would save me some time and avoid potentially costly
mistakes.
Thanks in advance
Carlos

Joe, You're right, according to CH.
I was reading through the old back issues of ZenAir News last week and saw
a "Letter from Chris" from several years ago where he stated that the plane can
be trimmed for solo flight of dual flight BUT NOT BOTH. This was back about
the time when aileron trim first was being considered as an option on the 601
series planes, and Chris had drawn sketches of how to build and mount a "fixed"
trim tab.
Phil Raker N556P HDS/Stratus ~85% complete
(about to mount second wing & check rigging)

Ray: Same mount here. I ended up rebuilding the motor mounts with longer bolts
and bushings. The bushings came with the firewall fwd. I also was a little concerned
with no safety wire on the nuts so I checked with my EAA advisor. He said
that if you are using the correct locknuts for the engine compartment (heat)
they will hold just fine. I am using the ones that Zenith sent so I hope they
are the right ones. I will check the torque often. Jack Russell

Hello List,
1. The bolts are not long enough, being nearly 1/4 inch shy of even
protruding through the tubing.
2. The bolt o.d. Is much narrower than the tubing i.d. Which might seem to
imply a bushing is required.

>On that subject - check out the Jabiru site for info about the size of
(http://www.usjabiru.com/Tech%20Tips.htm#Head Cooling)
oil cooler hole (no dimensions are called out in the plans). I cut mine
based on the photo guide picture (~3.5" x 5"). I have since made the hole
smaller and my oil temp and CHTs are lower. The hole is now about 3 x 3.5
inches. Closer to the 1" x 4" Jabiru recommends - but still >2x. I plan to
mask a bit more off and see what happens (I was feeling my way through
this - what did I know??). Turns out the larger hole increases the
pressure in the lower cowling and restricts air flow and hence cooling -
it was counter intuitive to me until I understood.
+++ Pete K. has pointed out this fact numerous times on the jabbayahoogroups site
(and on his website) and it's been echoed by Andy S. as well. You want LOW
pressure in the bottom of the cowl to promote both oil and CHT cooling. BIG
hole does not cut it. And you might want to check with Pete about the "no full
throttle under 212F" belief. If it's just after startup - yes. In the air
with a fully warmed engine - let her rip. My CHTs don't exceed 280F in climbs
on a summer day.
+++ See "tech tips" at http://www.usjabiru.com/Tech%20Tips.htm scroll toward bottom and you'll see pics of how to do it and how "not' to do it. The new Jabiru 601 cowl does away with that worry altogether with a molded in NACA for the oil cooler.
+++ Always, always, always monitor all six cylinders of the 3300 for CHTs. Call
Sandy at Grand Rapids and she'll tell you how to have your unit upgraded for
all six. You spent good money on that little 3300 jewel, don't shortchange it
now.

Bob,
Having crashed a Cessna while flying from the right seat (cus I didn't
know I couldn't) I personally would be VERY reluctant to give dual with
the prospective pilot in the left seat.
Having said that I still think it would be OK. Personally I would get
some time in ANY airplane just to get flying again. If you could then
get some right seat time I think you will be OK in flying from the left.
For me I had not flown for 4 months and had about 90 hoursTT. On the day
of the first flight I did 3 approaches in an Acroduster....It has both a
High AND a low wing and a stick!
Totally different from the 601 and gave me little benefit, mostly in the
form of relaxing the pressure...:)
First flight in the HDS was a non event.
I have given a few folks right seat time before their first flights and
they all report no problems on the big day...:)

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bob Miller"

Having very few hours in power planes (but a number in sailplanes and
hang-gliders) in the last 20 years, I'm looking for a way to get back in
the groove before my first flight, which could conceivably be September
or October. It appears that the only commercial place in Canada to get
possible dual in a 601 is FlyPass--unfortunately they've only got an XL
on hand and that will be delivered to the customer before I can get up
there. It doesn't sound like they're really enthusiastic about giving
dual to anybody that hasn't bought a plane from them, anyway, their main
business being sales. I contacted Zenith about the issue, and they
recommended FlyPass, so that was pretty much a dead end.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to what airplane might be most
comprable to the Zodiac 601HD, and where dual might be available in such
a craft?
Of course, if you know of anyone in Canada (preferably Eastern Canada)
that has a private 601 that they could give dual instruction in, that
would be ideal.
Many thanks,
Bob Miller

Yes. makes instal more flexible.
Also, some explained me that by recirculating fuel,
you clear possible air in line, keep pumps cool,
regulate pressure better....
I'm no expert... so I leave the floor for discussions
on that.

Hey Phil
Thanks for confirmation of that with old documentation from Chris. I had run
the question past a few others and they had all surmised that since your
weight was port of the centerline, that in a small plane such as the 601, you
would have a heavy left wing. Which makes perfect sense.
Cheers
Joe

On our Zodiac CH601HD with Rotax 912S, I believe that the angles of
incidence of the two wings are identical. The aircraft wants to roll to
the left when flying hands off. Many others have found the same
phenomenon. The fix we will do is the following (we are copying the
successful fix done by another builder). First, LOWER the rear Z of the
left wing by about 3/16 inch (4-5 mm) by filing an elongated hole where
the bolt goes through from the centre wing section pickup. Then, fly it
and see if the correction is sufficient. If not, do the same thing to the
left wing, but this time, RAISE the rear Z. This should be enough.
Finally, rivet a little patch of aluminum across the elongated hole(s) so
that the new position(s) are permanent, and the bolt(s) cannot move.

Did you notice if the ball was centered on the turn-and-bank?
My 601 HD had a heavy left wing too. I could trim it out with full
deflection of the electric aileron trim, but noticed that I always
needed to keep a little right rudder in or the ball was off-center.
Most (all?) factory built planes have a small offset in the fixed part
of the vertical tail to counteract the torque of the engine. I finally
put a small trim tab on the rudder and now the wings are level and the
ball is centered when flying with hands and feet off the controls.
