Dear Lister,
Please read over the Zenith-List Usage Guidelines below. The complete

Zenith-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Zenith-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Zenith-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Zenith-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Zenith-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bob Miller" <drmiller@cvillepsychology.net>
Thanks again, everybody, for your input on instruction. Our buddy Norm Taylor
in Australia suggested the flight sim, says it was very helpful when he was preparing
for his first flight. Anybody know how to get the Zodiac module, and
which version of Flight Simulator is best with it?
Below is the exchange with the outfit in Georgia, which sounds very promising.
Again, their link is http://www.philsflying.com/contact.html
Yes, the two planes are extremely similar in their flight characteristics. I haven't
flown the HD personally, but I did build and fly an HDS.
We are certainly happy to get you some Alarus time. We have 4 of these wonderful
planes in our fleet. Three are in Atlanta, and the other near Augusta. I
would also recommend that you participate in the EAA Flight Advisor program.
This program helps you make an assessment of best course of action toward a successful
first flight in your homebuilt.
Best Regards,

Hi,
I'm preparing for the first flight of the Zenith 601HD I"m building, and understand
the Alarus flies much like it. Do you agree, and if so can I get instruction
through your operation?

In my last posting on flight instruction, I somehow put Norm Turner's last name
as Taylor. Out of respect for him, I want to make the correction. This is a
guy who thinks nothing of jumping in his 601 and making 1500+ km flights over
some of the most inhospitable territory in the world. He's also the guy who
put all of our high bandwidth speculation to the test by actually covering his
aileron gaps with tape and making flight tests, reporting significant improvements
in performance. He's the last guy I'd want to dis. Sorry, Norm, if you're
reading this, and thanks again for your contributions.

Check out www.cruzpro.com I have one of the fuel gauges on my header. You
can program alarms for low fuel. It works with most senders. Boat shops
will have compatible senders.

General rule of thumb is 4 lb of thrust per horsepower. I get 375 lb on a
Cont 85, Warp Drive 2 blade prop of 70 diameter. The blade pitch is set for
2400 rpm static.
YOu will find actual static thrust will vary a lot depending on wind at test
site. Any head wind will reduce the thrust as will a side wind. Visualize
100 mph head wind (of course theoritical) and thrust would be near zero.
So for best results test with zero or little wind.

Once you get the main sections of the fuselage done and assembled, you won't
need that big bench anymore. You can get by with a small bench up against a
wall.

The problem people are facing with the Stratus EA81 oil filter setup is that
there is very little clearance between the oil filter and the engine mount.
Any filter longer than about 2 1/2 inches will not fit.
I just ordered several of the Wix 51065 filters for my engine but what they
actually sent me were Wix 57035. This filter is the same size as the 51065.
The only difference I could find is that the internal structure is
different. This filter seems to be more readily available than the 51065,
maybe it's the the "improved" version that replaced the 51065 that Wix no
longer makes.

Brett, how are you measuring thrust? Spring scale to a fence post or is it
more complicated than that? BTW, nice engines! I imagine the HD engine's
high torque curve helps with the thrust, eh?

Understood Bryan. Once the threaded hole and gasket surfaces match up,
simply pick out a filter that physically meets the needs of the available
space. I have a spin on filter on my '57 Harley that fits onto a dune buggy
spin-on adapter (generic, not Harley specific) that is only 1 3/4" in
diameter and about 2" in length. I have no idea what it was originally
designed to fit, but is a standard Fram filter.

Hi again group!!!
I'm excited! EAA asked Zenith to display a Zodiac CH601XL at their main
tent at the Flyin and Zenith chose N633Z! It's hard for me to believe it.
I can't be at AWO Wed, Thu or Fri but I hope the weather lets me get the
plane there on Tuesday. I plan to be there Sat + Sun. Hope to see some of
my fellow Zodiac builders.
I hope to have my building video running on a portable DVD player.
One frame a minute played back at 15 frames/second. The plane gets
built in about 40 minutes. I also have a nice set of building photos.

Subject: | Re: A bit more on heavy left wing problem |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com>
Hi gang!
Yesterday, I went back to the airport, measured the
incidence of both wings.. I had a noticeable
difference and as a result, I lowered the left wing
rear Z by 5/32.
To do this, I detached the wing from the centerwing.
Replaced the part 6V7-7 (rear Z splice plate, outboard
wing section). I drilled the new one with the 1/4"
hole 5/32 higher, making sure to account for the 6.5
degree diheral of the wing. Drilling out the rivets
from the back and from inside the wing through the
lightening holes was quite "fun".
After re-installing the wing, I replaced the front
attachment plate 6V8-4.
The plane flew today for nearly 3 hours. The pilot
said he can now balance the aircraft using the aileron
trim at its nearly full deflection (much better than
last week). While he recommends waiting to test with
a "passenger load" before touching anything, I feel
like making some more corrections by raising the right
wing rear Z. I'd like this plane to fly without any
trim input.
