Zenith builders,
I know that there is not a lot of 4130 steel in the 701 and 601, but I
am asking upon your guy's expertise. I have acquired a Sidewinder steel
fuselage, to build as my second plane ( the 701 being the first). It has
surface rust on it, and I have been doing a lot of scrubing with
scotch-brite pads. I have heard about trying not to use a metal-on-metal
type of scrubber/cleanser. What do you think about using Navel Jelly on
the frame, and then clean it off, and finish up with say 120-200 grit
sandpaper? I then want to get a coat of some type of cheap paint that
will help keep the rust down while I store it outside and finish my
CH701. Is Rust-O-lieum (sp?) any good to help prevent rust for a few
months out in the dry 30% humity air in Colorado?
Thanks guys!!
Keith

Correction on my web site. I left out the "ch". The correct address is www.angelfire.com/un/ch701.

Instead of all that trouble why not coat it with LPS3 put it on blocks to keep
it off the ground and throw a cover over it, wooks for me on the gufl coast so
should be fine where you are . LOW&Slow John

Congratulations Jeff,
The transition from building to flying is an exciting time.
and it is worth it.

I see what you mean about the manual becoming more and more vague as one progresses.
I can't find how to locate the foreward side skins, i.e. how much to overlap
over the aft ones. It seems like there is plenty of excess length but still
feel uncertain. Anyone have recommendations?

Steve: I don't think that the overlap matters since you will have to trim the skin
anyway. Just make sure that you have it flush with the top longerons and enough
extending past the firewall to trim to specs. Eventually you will trim the
rear to a 20mm overlap to keep your 10mm rivet edge. Jack Russell

You need to trim the side skins at both ends anyway. Just leave enough at the back
to trim for a 20mm overlap with the rear skins. Leave most of the excess hanging
past the firewall, you need a wide flange there to attach the cowling.
The overhang past the firewall needs to be wide enough to get your Dzeus fasteners
in with acceptable edge clearance an still narrow enough to be able to remove
the cowl without removing the propeller. Another thing that is a bit unclear
in the plans is that there will be a large triangular shaped overlap of the
side skins with the cabin floor skin.

Keith,
I also live in Colorado, and I have made a point of painting each of
my steel parts with Rust-Oleum (sp?) before putting them out in my storage
box outside, and I'll tell you, I have yet to see any corrosion on any of
them.

Having decided (with great trepidation) to try plans-building my 601XL fuselage,
I was wondering if anybody has a firewall forming block they would like to sell,
rent, loan out, give away, or otherwise dispose of? I'd like to make my firewall
of SS. Ray Huffman of Prairie Village KS (He's not on the net, but just
this side of final inspection) built one for his HD, and I'd like to emulate
his.
