I realize this would probably be overkill, but was wondering if anyone had ever
thought of this to reach the "book speeds" that are advertised for the XL. It
claims 145 lbs. and 300 hp(?).

Just a short comment on Octane rating. The rating itself does not relate to whether
you might get a vapour lock problem. It is a measure of the pre ignition potential
of
a fuel in higher compression engine (ie. fuel ignition caused by compression and
high temperature before the timing of the spark plug). A reasonable description
of
the practical implications of higher and lower octane ratings for automobile fuels
can
be found at :
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/autos/octane.htm
As I recall the actual original number is some kind of ratio of long and short
hydrocarbon chains in the fuel but in modern times the effect of raising the Octane
(for high compression engines) is mostly achieved by additives (formerly a lead
compound) and not by adjusting the refining process to change the true octane
ratio.
Vapour potential is a whole other problem that may be related to auto versus
aviation fuel but isn't really measured by the Octane rating.

Craig,
So far Norm has only used tape, and hasn't put in any permanent seals. He
reports the tape appeared to reduce his stall speed on his HDS by 4-5 kts,
and improve his cruise (at weight of around 400kg) by 3-5 kts. Improvement
in cruise at MTOW was marginal.
I'm wondering whether an aluminum gap seal would be more or less effective
than the tape. More, would be my guess, since the tape would have to flap
around when the ailerons are neutral in order to have enough to stretch over
the gap when the aileron is full up.

Thanks, Mark, for providing www.ch601.org , it's a great service to make
that kind of archive.
I hope that people sending in innovations will copy the message both to that
site as well as to the regular list for those of us who don't check your
site as often as we do our email.
Yes, maybe the prize wasn't such a good idea. It might discourage somebody
from sending in an innovation that would be useful, but the originator might
think wouldn't be good enough to compete. And I would hope people will send
in all their innovations and tips, large and small.
A small one I'm currently thinking about is a simple, lightweight step for
my 601 that can be stored in the baggage compartment. It would lean against
the joint between wing and fuselage, so that the main weight of the person
using it is transferred to the ground. After use, pilot can lean over and
pick it up and stow it. The tube step in the design looks pretty heavy as
well as draggy.

Subject: | invitation for innovations (Foul Fitting Fuel Filler |
Fix)
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Scott Laughlin" <cookwithgas@hotmail.com>
Hi Frank:
My set of plans don't mention that a spacer is needed for the fuel filler,
so I just built the tanks according to the drawing. When I put it all
together is when I found the problem - the fuel caps are the flush-fitting
type.
The actual fuel cap fits on the tank as normal, just 11 mm or so below the
skin. I made the hole in the skin a little larger so it would be easy to
get the cap off and pull it up. The paddle swings out of the way far enough
so the fuel cap comes out easy.
To answer Carlos' question about the paddle sagging - only time will tell.
The backing plate is supported on two sides, and you can't really push the
paddle down far enough to cause plastic deformation of the aluminum, so I am
guessing it will stay tight up against the wing skin. Worst case, I could
just remove a few rivets and slide a slightly thicker backing plate under
the skin to replace existing plate, but I don't see that happening.
Thanks for your interest,
Scott Laughlin

Yes - Aircraft Spruce carries them. Try
<http://www.aircraftspruce.com/nsearch.php?s=oil+door> for the oil door with
latch or <http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/flushlatch.php> for
similar latching products. They don't show pictures on the web page so I'd
recommend ordering the catalog on-line and then checking the air frame
section of the catalog (somewhere around pp. 186-191).

As I now am the proud owner of two Jabiru cowls for my Zodiac - last year's and
this year's new
model, I would like to sell the older version, at a deep discount. The new model
has the NACA
vents already faired in, is a couple inches longer (and requires a $170 prop extension),
and sells
for $640. I'm asking $200 for the old one, which is unused and is of quite high
quality
construction. Contact Pete at Jabiru (info@usjabiru.com) or go to their website
(
www.usjabiru.com ) for the full story on the differences, and contact me offline if you'd like to
purchase my old one.

Subject: | Resale of completed Zodiac XL's? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Hinde, Frank George" <frank.hinde@hp.com>
I think maybe if you built up your own motor you might but otherwise (as
far as the HD(s) models are concerned) no way.
Lets see, My engine package was 7K (cheaper than a Rotax I believe), add
the prop a radio, transponder, the kit, strobes, lights and seat
cushions and your up to 30k....Thats without paint.
I have not seen a HD(S) even being advertised for 30k,...So it doesn't
add up.
Now if you take the fact that renting a C152 runs about $40 an hour and
your plane will cost you about 10 to 12 in fuel, insurance and hangar
rent, you will probably come out ahead...
I think the only plane that regularly sells for more than the assembly
price is the Van's RV's.

if you wanr to get the resale value of the original kit yes, you can do
so as long as you don't ad alot of avionics or other equipment.

"Special guest Cyrillo Vergara treated us to a demonstration of his new and

performance engine weighing only 132lb. can produce nearly 300 hp! After
you've looked at the pictures below, click here to jump over to Cyrillo's

The other day, Walmart had some car covers for $20. It was a kind of
silvery material that is supposed to reflect the sun and the backside was
not supposed to scratch. I bought the biggest I could find and plan on
making a canopy cover out of it one day.

What are you using for a thread seal/lubricant for the fuel tank
fittings?
Martin Bima
Martin,
I'm using Permatex High temperature thread sealant.
Its white paste you put on the threads before assembly. It doesn't dry but
remains in its
paste form.
The back of the package states...Seals threaded metal fittings on hydrolic,
pneumatic,
fuel, and cooling systems.
Item # 59214
purchased at Auto Zone autoparts store.
Its worked great in all leak checks thus far.

I had Bruce's covers make one for my 601HDS. Fits like a glove and does the job.
Nice quality, has soft underside so not to scatch canopy.

Hi Bob
Over the next week or so I will be making my step as well and I'm
planning on doing an airfoil shape to reduce drag. I will take full
photo's and post it as soon as possible, I'm also close to finishing the
hookup for the Ford seat powered flap mechanism Will post that one ASAP.

A small one I'm currently thinking about is a simple, lightweight step
for
my 601 that can be stored in the baggage compartment. It would lean
against
the joint between wing and fuselage, so that the main weight of the
person
using it is transferred to the ground. After use, pilot can lean over
and
pick it up and stow it. The tube step in the design looks pretty heavy
as
well as draggy.

Just picked up 8 spray bombs of Zinc-Chromate from Canadian Tire - $7.99
each.
Fuel does not hurt t-tape, the grinding of the interlocking threads
hurts t-tape. I will try the paste - thanks.

So there is no concearn of the liquid/paste thread seal/lubricant getting
into the fuel system and causing bad things to happen?

Nope...flakes of as tiny particles rather than shards o tape which can
block jets.
Clearly one uses it sparingly though so as not to paste it into the
inside of the fitting.

Martin:
I tried some aluminum primer from Canadian Tire that
"Replaces Zinc Chromate". At least that is what it
says. I don't think there is any zinc in that product.
You may want to double check the can if you are
expecting there to be zinc in your primer. Stuff
seems to apply OK but whether it works as well as Z-C
only time will tell.

It is NOT the zinc that creates the problem... its the chrome (chromate)!

Any sealer should be used sparingly and then applied to the threads in a way
that as much as possible keeps the sealer from entering the fuel system.
With that said the non- solids are less likely to clog a small orfice in a
carb or a Fuel injector or cause a check valve to leak or------?. Tom

I used a white teflon paste and it worked ok on NPT fittings for about 70
hours and now it's weeping and getting gradually worse. It was recommended
to me to use "black epoxy goop" from Spruce. Bought it, haven't tried it
yet. Will probably switch to as many flare fittings as I can and use black
goop on remainder.

Subject: | I heard my muffler fail this time! |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: xl <xl@prosody.org>
I replaced the Jabiru 3300 muffler a week and a half ago at ~63 hours.
The stock new one cracked at ~70 hours. And I did hear it this time.
I am now sensitized to the change in tone. It is louder but
not as much as I'd think. 2500 rpm with the cracks sounded
about like 3000 rpm without the cracks. It wasn't much different
sounding than when the last one fell off. Somewhat like going
from 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm on takeoff.
When I landed and pulled the cowl I found the front right weld
cracked at the top and was working down. The front left weld
was cracked to about 2/3s of the way down. And when I moved the
tailpipes up and down the cracks got bigger. It appears that
once the cracks start they can get bigger quickly. The muffler
bounces up and down and opens the cracks.
Maybe I should stick with straight pipes.
Is there a way to build a straight muffler (about 2.5" in diameter)
that would be more neighborly than unmuffled pipes?
