Cedric: I have the new tail on my 801, but am still about a month away from
flying. I made the first one off the production tooling. It seems much
stronger and fits better than the old stabilizer. I also have the
Eggenfellner H6 engine, but with a Quinti 4 blade variable pitch prop with
Warp Drive blades. My email is tom@tafcor.com if you have more questions.

I also used the 1/8" X 3/4" X 3/4" 6061-T6 angle like Mark, but I'm pretty
happy with the decision. It eliminates the need for a splice - you can get
this material in 24 foot lengths if you want. I just ordered a 24' length
cut in half and put a 12' piece on each side (trimmed it to fit). It causes
a little extra fitting time near the tail, but it eliminates the need for a
long brake and also eliminates the splice.
BTW, I use a fly cutter also where I need to flange the holes, and hole saws
where no flange is needed. Lowes has a large selection of hole saws- I
think I have one of each size now.

While I'm at it, has anybody done the four rear longerons in sections,
as opposed to trying to find an 8-foot brake? Thanks in advance for any
advice.

If you're stubborn, you can make your own! I bought a big Sears wood lathe, laminated
up a male plug and turned the shape I wanted. I made the spinner shell
of W.E.S.T. epoxyglass and the inner "liner" as well. It works well, very well
balanced, very smooth.
I've made several reductions of the gaping fish-mouth to make it a little less
draggy, too.

How hard is it to use the standard flap lever on a 701?
I am at the point now that I have to go with the standard flap leaver provided
by Zenith, or build something different to apply the flaps. My plans call for
only one notch. Somewhere I've heard they are awkward and hard to apply.

Kelly,
I suspect that Chris was pleased to see the very high quality of your
workmanship as
well. When you've done such work, it's hard to consider a coat of paint
covering
it up. Did any conversation of VGs carry over into SP aircraft and their
application?

Hi Larry,
Thanks for the like words!
He did say don't let anyone touch it as the finger prints will difficult to
remove (tell me something I don't know!).

No, I don't think he wanted to touch that one, he just said if it worked for
me he was happy for me. But he did hint that he would like a little more
info about how they effect all phases of flight (which I haven't approached
yet). So he may be storing this info for future use???

Hello Cedric,
we have a LRI "Lift Reserve Indicator" AOA in our 701, not test flown
yet but almost ready to fly (the last 10% takes 90% of the time :-)
their page is
http://www.liftreserve.com/
There is some info about this in the archives, including some posts
about the LRI company owner. There is one C-182 with STOL kit flying
near here to the mountains, I talked once with the pilot and he is very
happy with it...
A person from LRI is (was) monitoring the list, if he does not get in
touch with you soon(Oshkosh week time, lots of work), send him a mail.
He is very helpfull, even to newbies like me :-)
Hope this helps.
Saludos

I haven't personally used the flaps on a 701, but I would think they wouldn't be difficult to use, just somewhat awkward. I flew with Roger at the Zenith factory and it didn't seem as if he was having to force anything. The Zenith plans I used called for two settings. I am building PegaStol wings and they call for three settings, thus three notches. Therefore I decided to make mine electric. Skyshops offers a complete conversion kit for around $600. But you can build your own for about $250. McMaster-Carr,(www.mcmaster.com) has a servo for $180, a Ray Allen Company(RAC) LED indicator is $72 and a rocker switch isn't expensive. I am going to use my RAC stick grip switches.

Flaps on a 701 very difficult to use. And if your shoulder harness is snug, virtually
impossible. And just try to retract smoothly in flight, yeah right!, been
there, tried that, and it definitely wasn't smooth! Looks like a servo and
electric flaps will be one of my first mods if I want to use flaps. Also, if you
look at a picture of zeniths flap handle it is very different from the plans.
BTW, thanks for the info on the servo, led, and rocker. I was looking at installing
the skyshop setup. Will go back and look at this option. Thanks again.

N701TD 24 hours short of being able to make the trip to Oshkosh this year. Guess
I'll just have to satisfy myself with a few other fly-ins when I can break
out of my 25 mile radius.

Also Cedric
IF you go to the www.ch601.org site you will find information on how to
make your own AOA instrument. It's the older analog instrument style but
work quite well. I'm still looking for information on how to make an LED
style gauge, can anyone help here?
