I talked to Chris Heintz and that is his prototype XL. Hopefully with all
the XL's being built right now there will be a better showing in the
future. I plan to make an effort to be ready by next year.

Ok guys'
I am wondering what the real-world stall speed I can expect with my HDS at 1320
lbs gross? That is, if the airframe is built as designed with the bubble canopy
and no wheel skirts. Any real test data? thanks phill

I had seen this question on the list before I went to Oshkosh... so I asked when
I got there.
My specific question was:
"With modifications, could the HDS be raited for the sport pilot rules."
The answer was "Yes, just add some vortex generators. This shouldn't be any problem
at all."

Since current lead time from Zenith is now nearly three months, I'm wondering
if any 601 XL builder might be giving up a project and have it for sale. If
any of you know of such please let me know. Thanks!

Has anyone found a good supply (in Canada?) for the Zodiac main gear tubes
that have the 90 degree bend? I am chaning my wheel barrow tires out for
trailer tires and punctured the tube -- oops...
Oh well, this will force me to stock a third one to carry on long trips
where it might be hard to find them?
Thanks

Has anyone replaced the old, complicated landing struts with the 'leaf' type
used on the XL? How would the weights compare -- I'd hate to make my
aircraft heavier, but I'd consider switching if it was possible.
I think the Czech Aircraft works builds their XLs with a much lighter
'fiber' leaf-gear component -- anyone know about this? Weight? Strength?
Cost? Feasiblity to install it on the HDS?
Thanks again,

I bought mine from Pneus M&M close to my house (and I
use 15X6X6 tires). I think that any good tire shop

Hi Grant
Go to the www.ch601.org <http://www.ch601.org/> website and click on
the Builders Resources there you will find a link on how to convert your
landing gear to the XL style! You will find it under the heading of
Zodiac Changes.

Grant,
I used a Michilin S-83 tire obtained at a motorcycle shop and got tubes
that had the 90-degree bends there. The tires were for a motor scooter,
but have worked out very well.

A Mr.Darby did a landing gear switch off from the HDS

Hi Grant;
We had to order them in from a local tire shop. They seemed to be able
to get them without a problem. The tubes are Cheng shin and made in
Taiwan. My spare has the number 31073376 printed on it. Don't know
whether that is a part number or a serial number. The size is
4.80/4.00-8. Hope this helps.

Subject: | RE: XL gear on the HDS? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Brandon Tucker <btucke73@yahoo.com>
Grant,
I contacted both Frank and Aaron about their
installations. They both, please correct me if I am
wrong, purchased a bolt on installation kit from Grove
gear, 1800 Joe Crosson Drive El Cajon, CA 92020
(619)562-1268. Aaron said that the gear is made of
tempered 2024, so it is quite a bit less material and
lighter than the basic bent 6061. One of them
compared the before and after modification weights. I
can't remember the exact numbers, but the weight
difference was within a few pounds. The price was
about $1500, which included 5" wheels and brakes, and
gun drilled brake lines for a very clean installation.
If you compare to the ZAC price of $1300 for the HDS
gear and wheels kit, it is not a bad deal, although
this does not include the nose or tail wheel.
Also, I contacted Chip Erwin at CAW, and he said
that he has never sold a composite gear separately,
but it is 40% lighter than the 6061 gear, and would
cost about what the grove gear costs. He also said
that he does not support an installation on an HDS, so
you would be on your own for mounting brackets and
supports.
The Grove installation seems considerably easier
than the bungee system. I am definitely going that
route. I live about 30 minutes from El Cajon, and was
planning a trip to Grove sometime in the near future
to check out their operation. Group purchase???
I hope Frank or Aaron are still on the list to
expand on this. They both contacted me off list when
I asked the same question a year ago. You might check
the archives.
Respectfully,
Brandon Tucker

Hello, all
I'm working on the HD spar, and have a question on solid rivets.
I used AD-5-8 rivets, as indicated in the plans, and the crushed rivet ended up
with a diameter of
~5.5 mm and height of ~1 mm.
This is still within tolerances, but I'm wondering what others have used, AD-5-8
or longer? (I'll
definitely use longer rivets on the spar cap doubler.)
Any thoughts and or comments welcome
Thanks

Not in Canada, eh, but the ubiquitous J.C. Whitney catalogue has them in 90 degree
bend.
Lots of baby powder in installing them helps avoid pinching and punctures.

My son and I ended-up driving to Oshkosh because of weather. We tried
staying at a new place this year. We stayed at Hickory Oaks Campground
which is located about 5 miles north of the show. They have a 2200' grass
strip and a nice little campground. Lots of trees, a lake to fish and very
quiet. They have a shuttle bus to take you to/from the show.
I have never been thrilled about flying into the show because of the traffic
(although in Nick's words: it's no big deal). Also, living in the middle of
a field with no protection from the wind and sun isn't great either. I think
we should have a 601/701 fly-in at this little strip. It was eutopia for my
son; airplanes AND fishing!
